#destinytruthcast Episode 41: Destiny - In Through the Out Door (with special guest Paul Tassi of Forbes)

Over the last year and a half we have tried to create a platform for the bnet community to speak to Bungie on a more personal level as they discuss their feeling for this game we all share this passion for and to hopefully help bridge the communication divide between community and developer. Over the last 40 episodes we’ve had on 69 different members of the community and we have gotten to know the voices and the personalities behind the names we see each day on the forums. We’ve spoken to guardians from all over the world and they’ve shared their ideas on the game with us, with the community and with Cozmo, DeeJ and others at Bungie as well. Bnet has a reputation for being the wild west of Destiny discussion and there is a perception that Bungie doesn’t listen to us here, but it’s not the case. They do listen, they do respond and we as a community have done a great deal to help shape this game over the last 2 ½ years. Today we are happy to have a new bnet guest, stealthmanuk to talk Destiny, and we are also joined today by someone who writes about Destiny on a national level and has been linked extensively in posts since launch and are happy to welcome Paul Tassi of Forbes to the podcast.
Downloadable Audio links: SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/oceans-of-canopy/dtc-episode-41-destiny-in-through-the-out-door iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/destinytruthcast-destiny-podcast/id1101605804?mt=2

The #destinytruthcast is a Bnet #feedback forum community podcast hosted by members of the community and featuring community members as guests. The podcast was started to give everyday guardians a chance to do something they would probably never experience by being on a podcast and to give them the opportunity to have not just their thoughts, but their voices heard by Bungie as they discuss the game. Beyond that, it's allowed us to get to know the voices and personalities behind the gamertags we see on the forums and get to know each other in a way not possible in anonymous words on a page. We aren't here to endorse or tear down Bungie or Destiny, but to give honest, balanced talk on this game. Thank-you and maybe we'll see you on an episode.

Welcome to a very special episode 41 of the #destinytruthcast where you the community join us in talking all things Bungie and Destiny. Today RedWingGirl and I are joined by bungie.net forum guest stealthmanuk and also none other than Forbes' Paul Tassi. Today's topics include- -"a complacent sort of tedium" and finding the joy in exploring open worlds -Will D2 be more expansive on robust? -Exotic Quests (Hit or Miss) -Ingame chat functionality -Will (or should) D2 have optional matchmaking? -Leaving all but our face paint behind -Transmogrification -Missing D1 gear? You'll probably get to re-grind/level some in D2 lol -Fresh start vs continuing journey -Eververse items not carrying forward -Bungie and the way they communicate -Destiny, addition through subtraction -Have you thought about the "Age of Triumph" at all this week? -If VoG comes back, is there a point now with gear being left behind? -PvP affecting PvE -1:1 balance vs rock, paper, scissors -What is your absolute favorite weapon since launch? -Is reaching endgame too easy? -Having more challenging content to run at max level -3oC vs endgrams and how loot drops -The Loot Cave! -The death of the Nightfall (bring back the blue flame!) -Iron Banana -Filling in Destiny's silent worlds -Will (or should) D2 have dedicated servers instead of P2P? -Should D2 have ranked playlists? -Favorite moments of the week Once again thank you to stealthmanuk and Paul Tassi for joining us today and we thank you for listening and participating on the forums. We can be found on twitter @dstinytruthcast and online at www.destinytruthcast.com As always, if you'd like to be on a future podcast, message us and let us know your thoughts on the game and what you think would be an important topic to come on and discuss. We look forward to hearing from you and can't wait to hear more voices on the next episode :) Paul can be found at https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/#26d3068d6041 and https://www.earthborntrilogy.com/
Theme song: Convince Us Artist: Swell Album: Whenever You're Ready

Once again I want to thank each of the Guardians who've appeared on the #dtc and helped make this such a cool experience as we've gotten to know each other a little and talk Destiny. As for Trials I believe in hard work. I believe in working your way to the lighthouse. I believe in having exclusive loot once you make it there. What I don't believe in, is how Trials has now become exploitable with paid carries and account recoveries. I don't believe in Trials' "spirit of competition" when it has now been exploited, and some people can cheat their way to the lighthouse by buying a lag switcher or buying a carry. Where now, Trials has a black market where people make money off of Bungie's product when they weren't supposed to be. I believe in the spirit of competition and hard work as long as it's honorable and truthful and not exploited or cheated. Now that Trials has been exploited it needs looked at. Before all these exploits existed I would have been gung ho for Trials and what it stands for. I would have said leave Trials the -blam!- alone people! Now that isn't the case unfortunately and it sucks others have ruined what Trials of Osiris should stand for! When everywhere else in Destiny the game has had an exploited feature or cheated feature, Bungie was quick to fix it. Unlimited supers. LEFT Gjally behind because people wouldn't allow you into their fireteams without it. Now people don't allow you into their Trials fireteams without high Elo ratings. So why is Bungie still allowing Trials to be exploited by account recoveries and paid carries. Don't tell me there is nothing to be done. Don't tell me you can't think of any possible solution to keep Trials honorable and respectable. Going to the lighthouse house now represents dishonor and cheating. Working as intended? Bungie needs to fix it now so it can truly stand for something great, so that people that do make it there, can feel proud for their accomplishments. As of now if Trials just gets transferred over into D2 the way it is currently working, it's just going to get worse and worse for this franchise. I hate to say it, but it's the honest truth.

      • A little late to the party. Another great listen. It's actually weird because when Bungie said that you won't be taking anything except your character to D2 I wasn't surprised or disappointed. I think I've had that view for a while now. Could be because they have been doing that for a long time between DLCs or maybe because as much as I love my gear and weapons, I'm just kinda tired of seeing them now. I've never spent any money on anything apart from the DLCs but can completely understand why those who have would be particularly peeved at the decision. It's a weird decision as well. Take your character? "What you mean that doll who I've seen 10000 copies of in the tower since I started that game..... it's okay they can also go if you want". I've always hoped they'd let me redesign my titan if I'm honest. Just to touch on a few other things. - Glad to have the Vault coming back. Really hope Skolas does as well because that is where I will be for 80% of my time while still playing Destiny. I just hope they do something to keep the difficulty up and remove any prior cheeses. I want the challenge. - Completely loved that idea of a hard mode once you hit maximum light cap. With the exception of the Taken, all other enemies are easily managed. - No idea how they can change weapons to try and make it less "meta-centric" but I definitely don't want white weapons ala Halo style. - Paul hit the nail on the head with the problem of the open world in Destiny. The way it's played makes it seem very level based. I would love just more exploration in general. I want to get fragments of grimoire and run with it to find the secrets and begin the quests. They have so much mythos and mystery that this would be a missed trick if they didn't capitalise on it. - Lastly going back to the idea of losing everything. There are a lot of theories of the tower being attacked and the vaults being destroyed which would be why we don't have anything but our characters. Also with the story of Shaxx fighting Cabal with a current weapon makes me think that some things will make it over. I'd be happy enough with this though I think they should really limit the exotics that make the transfer. Let's face it some are game breaking in the fact that other people treat them as the go to guns for crucible while others are exotic in name only. We do want the cool don't get me wrong Gjally, Sleeper are more than cool. However the insane in a primary slot may be something you want to consider going forward. Especially if that insane item isn't used in the main reason for the game which is the PvE. Again great listen.

This is a really nicely laid out and packaged podcast. Many points were pure and beautiful as crystal. Now as for our transfers to D2... I hate having to start from scratch again, but after giving some thought I have shifted a bit in opinion. BXR Lonestar helped me in this change of heart:
I have mixed feelings on the subject. I'm perfectly willing to start fresh with a clean slate, but it all depends on what we get in return. I don't want it to be like the transition to TTK, where Y1 players had to leave behind their hard earned items (Y2 items are easy to earn by comparison), only to have them replaced with gear that really wasn't better than what we had in Y1 - it was just higher light level. And in TTK, they abandoned a solid foundation in favor of trying to please the casual masses which really lead to the irrelevance of endgame PVE and put more emphasis on PVP as endgame content. In order to make the fresh start palatable, I need to see 1) a return to the Y1 foundation - the best rewards in the game come from endgame RNG; less emphasis on quests for ELITE level items; 2) Separation of PVE from PVP. Not just elimination of quests that take you into PVP to earn PVE guns and vice versa, but full separation of balance patches. 3) Dedicated servers for both PVE and PVP. And 4) Better netcode. If a fresh start was necessary to get all of that and more? Then it would be well worth it, and I'd do it in a heartbeat - so long as it was the last such event. If not, there's really no reason for me to continue to play the game as the fresh start, combined with other issues in Y2 essentially show that the FPS crowd has won the battle for the soul of Destiny - and that just isn't what I signed up for when I preordered Vanilla and bought the season pass.
-BXR Lonestar Just one way of many to say it, but I guess his 2 cents are worth a dollar so to speak. I really hope we all can aquire what you pointed out, better connections, separation of game modes, reaquiring some of the gear found in D1 etc. As a year 2 player I never felt the sharp cut of leaving year 1 weapons and armor behind so what I say means nothing. I just hope that it does not come to that in D2, where year one is cut away at such a fault line from the rest of the game's lifespan. I am somewhat glad the old raids are risen from the dead, but like all undead, and in this case, they will be killed again except the body no longer rests peacefully in its grave. Well I have written enough here. I will answer any additional questions you ask.

          • Paul just wrote an article on parting gifts for D1 players...and 1 of them could be my beloved Vex. Do you all think Bungie will do something like this? https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2017/03/07/why-im-convinced-destinys-parting-gift-to-players-will-be-a-400-light-mythoclast/#3afdf96331db

Edit: Whaaaat we got paul! I was free Sunday Sols!! I'm going to tell my boss this weekend to eat it so that im free Sunday.....and the foreseeable future. Good one guys. A few things: -Exotic Quests (Hit or Miss) I would rather have quest then Rng. It takes so much enjoyment out of a hard activity when you get 12 strange coins (night fall, huh redwing?) -Ingame chat functionality Would be cool, just add a muting function in every activity -Will (or should) D2 have optional matchmaking? Idk if It would work in raids, but everything else needs omm. I know gta v is a completely different game, but doing heist with randoms without a mic is a nightmare. In game lfg room where you can setup teams and chat would be cool for EGC. -Leaving all but our face paint behind Kinda BS, Especially for players who paid hundreds at the E-Store and invested hrs into destiny. Like one of you said in the pod cast (I think It was paul) We are more attached to our weapons than our guardians. Its true, our weapons have more character then our guardians. There are only a few characters (that talk) I like In destiny and I can count them on one hand (xur, the queen, Cayde-6 duh, Eris, and Lord Shaxx). The speaker has said nothing in....forever. -Transmogrification sigh.....its way too late, Can only hope D2 does this. -Missing D1 gear? You'll probably get to re-grind/level some in D2 lol Ohh traveler no, don't say that, Im going to be pissed. -Fresh start vs continuing journey Fresh start, bungie needs it, imo we deserve it. Destiny has been fun, but Its beyond repair. Balance will never be a thing, when D2 releases whatever pvp is in destiny, is what its going be. D2 better be headed somewhere and not bungie having us beta testing/no direction and playing it my ear. -Have you thought about the "Age of Triumph" at all this week? Sadly, no. You don't drop a bomb and good news at the same time(bungie does that a lot), bungie should work on their timing. I was way more focused on the noting transferring part (Mixed feeling got a few exotics that were a bitch to grind for). -If VoG comes back, is there a point now with gear being left behind? I'll play just for fun like 2-3 times, but I don't see a point in trying to get a full set of raid gear, or the vex. It depends. I'm not a collector

This is how I would describe the raids (Scolas as well) VoG: survival heavy, objective and minimal communication. 3-4 ppl should know what to do good for groups who want to teach new players. A good mix of hard & easy. Sunsingers and Defenders excels here Crotas End: one person should know what to do. Survival heavy with minimal communication and objectives. Great fun and easy raid that you can Sherpa up 5 players. Rockets with tracking are good here to help the sword user. Blade Dancers excels here PoE Skolas challenge: it took Boss encounters from hard games such as Dark/Demon soul, BloodBorn ect... And translated into an FPS encounter. Survival heavy, minimum communication and objectives. In my opinion best boss fight in the game. Shotguns are really good here. any class is good here except Strikers, voidwalkers and gunslingers Kings Fall: Objectives and Survival heavy everyone should know what to do. Snipers are a requirement here. Great and challenging raid full of challenging to overcome but rage quitters and unprepared ppl are not welcomed especially during Oryx encounter that is sometimes get glitchy. Defenders and Night Salkers excels here, warlocks are ok but need to change subclass depends on the fight WotM: Communication heavy with good amount of survival and objective (RNG objective are the worst with new ppl) fun and semi challenging for all groups. Sherpa friendly. all subclasses are good here except Bladedancer So new guys when the update hits you should have an idea what's these raids are all about.

                      • Started to listen and thanks for sending. I like the newer approach to leveling. At least you didn't grind against RNG to get a pair of boots or gloves to make the character level. Maybe a tad to easy but 1:1 infusion is better than six gear items needed to reach max level That was stale and annoying - by the time most people reached level 30 they released 31 armour from vendors (of all places) Destiny 2 - mixed feelings on a TOTAL restart. Good in one way bad in another. It's still largely positive as they can expand on past mistakes...... Separate pvp from pve might be a good change. Doom worked well with separate values. Destiny was hit with to many nerfs because of one element effecting the next. Gallahorn in pve - vex / Suros in pvp. The list goes on.......

                        • Fantastic podcast everyone. Don't really have much to add, everyone's points were well presented and well reasoned. I for one think I will be leaving my characters behind and starting new ones with the the hopefully VERY expanded appearance customization system... at least I hope so. I don't want to miss out on some exclusive item because I don't bring one of my very bland looking guardians forward. One of the best DTCs to date. 41 episodes and 69 guests huh? Quite an accomplishment. I'm sure I don't have to tell you Lost, but I'd keep Mr. Tassi on the Rolodex. Some folks around here hate, but I enjoy reading his articles. It might be cool to bring him in after this new content drops or when D2 hits. stealthmanuk, you were awesome too. It's great that you and your son play Destiny... that's pretty rad. My oldest is 6 years old... maybe one day I can enjoy that too.

Regarding VoG: The gear is the least of it. Tons of people have never run VoG, period. We've been doing a run or three every few weeks just to help out friends or friends of friends, or random blueberries who are looking to experience something. Outside of the gear, this is the raid everyone wants to finish at least once to experience it and, maybe, chase an elusive vex drop just to finish a grimoire book. It's also the one most people we do help out say is the most fun, or most impressive for whatever reason. So, yeah. Gear not moving forward is not something I see as a problem, there is a large number of people who just want to do it and have trouble finding groups of three others to help them, so if it does come forward, I'm going to enjoy the heck out of it and not worry about gear or drops, I'm just going to have fun helping others finish it, or challenging ourselves to 4 man speed runs.

This was an especially good episode. I really enjoyed it. In regards to the D2 character reset, I wanted to bring up one topic of discussion that I haven't heard people talking about much, and I think you all glossed over (or I missed it, as I have two younglings at home as I listen). The character reset may have been inevitable. In fact I assumed it would be. I used to be an implementor for a MUD.
If you aren't familiar, a MUD is a very early form of online RPG. It was all text, and users connected with telnet, or by navigating the gopher system (another early internet throwback) to our listing.
As an implementor, we were the top level game devs of our little iteration of internet gaming. We paid the server bills, so we got to make the big calls for game design and major changes. We also did some coding (at least I did), but we also had a few dedicated coders to help us make our idea reality, and a group of in game content creators. What I'm getting at, is there were a lot of parallels, albeit at a much smaller scale, to what is going on at a firm like bungie. When we made small patches, or added similar content to what already existed, it could be done relatively easily. We would test it a bit, then paste it into the main source directory, and reboot the system. All players would be disconnected, then come live again with the new changes in place. However, if you made major changes to the base code or incorporated large chunks of code from outside sources (MUDs of the same archetype often traded code modules when someone came up with something great), it would render the old player files incompatible with the new system to such a degree that a player wipe was necessary. It wasn't a matter of us wanting to reset the characters, it was a matter of us wanting to improve the game, and the p-wipe was the cost of being able to do that. This is why I wasn't surprised that D2 is going to be a reset. Given how hamstrung bungie was, by Activision, during the production of destiny, and the fact that the success has allowed them the latitude to (in theory) produce the game they really wanted to. The game engine in destiny 2 is probably so different, that they can't bring in the destiny 1 player files. This is actually a good thing. It means that major changes (hopefully improvements) are on the way, and they may be fulfilling some of those long forgotten promises of what destiny was supposed to be. That's why, even though I find a p-wipe annoying, I can't really be too upset about it. I've been on both sides of this issue, and over the long run, it usually works out for the best.

The problem with the Age of Triumph is if they would kept their mouths shut about weapons and armor not transferring over then I would have been VERY hyped about AoT. I have no interest in it now and many, about 12/18 of my Destiny friends found this out and deleted Destiny off their PS4's One of them filling my txts with hate towards Bungie. AoT is not going to be worth my time honestly, I have other games I need to play. I was so excited for this, I was looking forward to getting my Vex Titan armor back, I was getting hyped getting ready to grind to my New Vision of Confluence. But now, nothing, no reason to play it. I cannot get any fun out of something I know will be useless in a few months. Ignorance is Bliss Bungie, you should have shut up about the gear. You would be better off not even coming out with the Triumph content now.

Great episode, lots of stuff to talk about here. Exotic Quests: For me they're okay I just wish some didn't have the stupid Crucible Requirement like the Swords, it's the only reason I don't have an exotic sword. If it's just kills like the Bad Juju exotic bounty or Extoic faction class item quest I don't mind it's when we have to handicap ourselves by using the sword to get guardian kills or kills with void weapons. Personally I prefer Exotics dropping from Raids, chests and Legendary engrams over quests though. Ingame chat: Yes, this would make patrol a lot more fun and having it in the tower would also be great. Optional Matchmaking: They'd be morons of they didn't add it in Destiny 2. It's the reason a lot of people left and why only like 10% of the people that have played the game have done a raid. It NEEDS to be on the Nightfalls too. Favorite Weapon since Launch: Without a doubt it's the Shingen C/E. I've been wanting a Legendary Shingen since Launch and it was my favorite gun to use when Leveling up and in the beta. All guns I've tried don't feel like it at all. I love it for it's amazing stability and lack of recoil even without perks. All Auto Rifles I've tried with perfect stability don't feel like the Shingen. Unfortunately it only exists in Uncommon and Rare. Engrams and Loot Drops: I like the Idea of engrams I just hate that it takes up space in our armor and weapon slots. There should be a separate storage for them with a capacity of like 20 and even in our Vault. Also we should be able to fuse engrams like 5 rare could turn into a legendary or something. Death of the Nightfall: The blue flame buff gave me a lot of incentive to play the game. Back in Y1 it was the first thing we did every week on all 3 characters. It gave me a reason to do all daily bounties and patrol because I get more XP and Reputation. Without it I don't look forward to doing bounties I just load them up and if they get done then they get done if not I'll just leave them there until they do from regular activities.
