The machine clearly held a clockwork winding key in it's hand, and a hole in its back matched the key.

Neil, being the simple genius he was, gently took the key. "Hey, Kari, set him down." he said. Kari did so and Neil wound up the machine with the key, stepping back afterward.

After the winding process was complete, the key ejected from its port. The ticking returned, and the gears on the shoulders began to spin rapidly. A slight series of plinking came from the head, as though a music box was playing. The song subsided, and the machine climbed to its feet, regarding the two. "Gre-eet, unkno-unkowns. Thank-ank you fo-r wi-ind-inding me. I-I am etern-eter-eternally in-in-in yo-ur debt." The machine stuttered out, nodding.

(Apologies, but apparently Kari is still dead so this has to be both noncanon and discontinued. If it were my way, Kari would still be alive. Unfortunately he's not so...)
