Light's Tricon: Part 7: A Hungry Beast

A Hungry Beast After a While, Yuri woke up. He Went to the Vanguard hall to talk with Cayde-6. His timing couldn’t have been much better. Cayde-6: Yuriii! How’s it goin’ buddy. Yuri: You want me to do something, don’t you. Cayde-6: Well- I’m mean...ok fine, yes, I need your team. Yuri: What’s up? Cayde-6: So Ikora picked up this big ugly guy in the cosmodrome. Cayde-6 pulled up a picture of a large hive Ogre with a mouth for an eye. It was emitting a strange sort of aura. Yuri: The heck is that? Cayde-6: Ugly right? I call ‘em big mouth. This guy’s been literally eating up the ruins of old Russia. He’s like a vacuum. The longer he’s on, the more powerful his vacuum becomes. And he seems to be very very hungry. Do me a favor, get out there and take care of it. Yuri: That’s all we have to go on? Cayde-6: It’s everything Ikora would give me. Yuri sighed. Yuri: I’ll go get Iris and Taravax. Cayde-6: I’ll brief you when you’re in orbit. Yuri Gathered Taravax-7 and Iris. They went into low orbit above old Russia. Cayde-6: OK, so. Big ugly hive. Eats buildings for a living. We’ve got a lock on him in the old ruins of Stalingrad. Get down there and take him out. The fireteam dropped from orbit. They saw a large hive ogre at the ruin’s center. It appeared that some people were fighting it. One of those people appeared to be a guardian. The guardian was at the ogre’s feet, fighting desperately. Spitfire ran as fast as they could to help the guardian, but both him and his ghost were swallowed up before they could do anything. Yuri: Damnit! The ogre turned to the the fireteam. A wind picked up behind Spitfire. They realized it was trying to pull them in. They dived into some ruined buildings. They split up to keep the ogre off balance. Yuri: Cayde, who was that? Cayde-6: There’s no record of a guardian stationed there. Yuri: Must have been a renegade. Cayde-6: We’ll worry about that later. Take care of that ogre. Yuri pulled out a rocket launcher. The ogre focused on Taravax-7 in another building. Yuri aimed at the ogre and fired. The ogre turned with almost impossible speed and swallowed the rocket. The ogre appeared unaffected and focused on Yuri. Yuri opened his comm. Yuri: So apparently rockets are a no go for this guy. Iris: I saw. Keep it distracted, we’ll see how it reacts to a sniper. In a building on the far side of the ruins’ center, Iris poked out from behind cover and fired a shot at the ogre. Air swelled up around the ogre, creating a sort of shield made of air. The bullet curved around the ogre and landed close to Yuri. Yuri: Air shield. Great! Taravax-7: Keep it together. Yuri, get those people away from here. I want to keep that thing here. Iris, keep it circling. It seems to focus on whatever tries to hit it, and I want to see if we can make it frustrated. Yuri: I’ll get right on it. Don’t get killed. Yuri ran off to round up the refugees and lead them away from the battle. Iris and Taravax juggled the ogre's focus by popping off shots at it every now and again. After several cycles, the ogre became enraged. It scooped up a chunk of rock then tossed it at Taravax-7, but he rolled away before it made contact. Iris: I think it’s angry. Taravax-7: Good. Hopefully it’ll let it’s guard down. Iris: Break out your Telesto. Fire on my mark. Maybe fusion rounds will do something. Taravax-7 and Iris had their ghosts retrieve their Telestos, then Taravax-7 and Iris poked out of cover and fired simultaneously. The bolts hit the air shield and froze. The ogre let out a howl. The bolts suddenly fired out in every direction. Taravax-7: We’re running out of options here. Iris: Bullets don’t work, it eats rockets, and fusion rounds fire back at us. Now what? Taravax-7: I might have an idea, but I need more time to confirm a theory. Iris: Do what you need. Yuri finished getting the refugees out of the area and returned to help Taravax-7 and Iris. Yuri: What’d I miss? Taravax-7: Yuri, get that thing’s attention then fire a rocket at its mouth when it starts to suck you in. Yuri: Don’t like the sound of that, but I’m sure you’ve got your reasons. Yuri fired at the ogre with his hand cannon. It turned and as it started sucking up bits of rubble around Yuri, he fired a rocket. The ogre ate it again, but this time smoke forced its way out of it’s mouth. Yuri: Hey, I think that did something. Iris: I’d agree, but it’s still alive. Taravax-7: Yuri, do it again. As the ogre tried to suck Yuri up again, He fired a rocket, but this time the ogre closed it’s mouth before the rocket landed. The rocket hit the shield and flew off like the telesto bolts. Yuri: Well, it’s not stupid. Taravax-7: It’s learning. But I have my answer. Iris: What do you have in mind? Taravax-7: I’m gonna use a better rocket. Hold your fire. Taravax-7 moved to the second floor of the building he was in. He fired off a few shots to get the ogre to turn. It started sucking up air again. Taravax-7 let torrent of wind get to its strongest before pulling out Dark drinker. The wind started pulling Taravax in. Iris: Wait, Taravax, what are you doing? Taravax-7: I’m going through. Taravax ran at full speed and jumped through a window. He pointed the sword’s edge at the ogre and flew through the air like an arrow. Before the ogre had time to react, Taravax flew into its mouth and went through the back of its head. The ogre howled in pain before falling backwards, dead. Yuri and Iris hurried to Taravax-7’s side Yuri: You’re just full of bad ideas recently, aren’t you? Iris: Bad idea is an understatement. You’re going to end up getting yourself killed. Taravax: I have yet to find a situation where a sword doesn’t work. Iris let out a sigh. Some of the inhabitants of the ruins gathered around the fireteam. One of them stepped forward. She appeared to be the leader of the settlement. Yuri: And you are? Alex: Alex. I’m the leading authority here. And you have some nerve trying to order around my men, hunter. Yuri: Sorry about that, but if you don’t mind me askin’, who was other guardian that was here before us? Alex: He was a true guardian. He vowed to defend us, even though he was alone. Yuri: He was a renegade I take it? Alex: At least he helped us. Yuri: Hey, we saved your lives. Alex: You could have been here sooner. Yuri: We couldn’t have known there were people here. We would have come a long time ago if we had. Alex: Then how did you find us now? Yuri: That big ball of ugly over there. Taravax-7: Are any of you harmed? Alex: Please, these people are the strongest people I’ve ever known. Taravax-7: Well, now that we’ve found you, do you want us to escort you to the city. Alex: What makes you think we want to go? Taravax-7: I don’t doubt the strength of your people, but surely you’d rather live with some security as opposed to these destroyed ruins. Alex surveyed the damage done by the ogre. Alex: You make a fair point. Just give us a map, we’ll find our way. Taravax-7: It’s dangerous out there. Fallen patrol the wilds and can storm in from nowhere. Alex: Like I said, we’ll be fine. Granted we’ve grown a little weak in the time that guardian defended us, but a little time in the rough will whip us back into shape. Iris: Well, if you’re sure, then take this. Iris handed Alex a small device. Iris: If you find yourselves in a tight spot, give us a shout. We’ll be right there. Alex: Appreciated. Now, about that map. Yuri handed alex a data pad. Yuri: This’ll take you along the coyote's path. It’s the safest path known to the hunters out in these wilds. Yuri marked something on the pad, before letting go. Yuri: Right about there, you’ll be able to see Felwinter’s peak. Head to it and Lord Saladin will get you the rest of the way. Alex: Thank you. And especially you, exo. I don’t know very many people who would be willing to risk themselves like that to kill something. Taravax-7: I do what is necessary. The settlement’s inhabitants gathered up their things and moved out. Fireteam Spitfire returned to orbit and gave Cayde-6 a briefing on how the mission went. Cayde-6: I see you’ve killed the ogre. Yuri: All in a day’s work. Still, I kinda want to know who that guardian was. Feel bad we can’t give him a burial or something. Taravax-7: He died defending humanity from the forces of darkness. He went out as a guardian. He’ll be remembered by those he protected. Cayde-6: Well at least you’re all still alive, and you saved some people too. Get back here and I’ll give you your reward. Spitfire returned to the tower for some rest. Taravax-7, however, went to see Ikora to see if she found anything out about the sword.
