A ground-shaking shockwave, followed by a great boom! radiated down the block. People ran past Cayrik's ice cream parlor, recording something and screaming. "Daggr?" Angel asked as she ran to the door. Logan followed her outside, and they were met by the sight of a nearby building engulfed in flames.
"Not Daggr!" Logan said, trying to assure his girlfriend. Just then, Alice and Merlin appeared at the scene; Alice was wearing something on her shell. "What is that?..." Logan asked, getting sidetracked.
"It's the Cone of Shame... Merlin made me wear it," the shimmering ghost replied.
"I bet there are still people in there!" Angel declared as she ran forward and willed her armor on. Logan and the two ghosts followed as well.
Many Guardians were surrounding the building, hosing it with water from nearby hydrants. A couple spawned large Void riot shields, but the heat from the flames caused them to dissipate. Without a second's thought, Angel rushed for the entrance. "This is off limits! By order of Commander Zavala, this is City Guard business!" A titan shouted. He wasn't trying to be rude--more hands could help--but the City Guard were trained as first responders, and other Guardians could cause more trouble.
"Keep the fire isolated! We'll clear the building!" Angel replied, completely disregarding the titan's warning and running in.
"You can't go in there! Why the--?... Keep water on the fire!" The fire captain said to the other City Guard. Logan shrug his shoulders, then ran in as well.
Inside, Angel kept her arm up to shield her head from any falling debris. Logan ducked and weaved around, trying to avoid embers as well. "There are three floors," he said.
"Okay..." Angel glanced around for stairs. "I'll go up, you check this floor!" She ordered. With little time to argue, Logan complied.
The warlock checked the various rooms, which were all connected via several narrow hallways. Smoke clouded Logan's visibility, so the he crouched down to see better. The dining room was clear, and the kitchen as well. The Guardian moved into the living room, which was down the hall. A teenager was using a fire extinguisher to keep the fire away. It was working, but the heat was still slowly cooking him. "Come with me!" Logan shouted.
The warlock waved a hand in a circle, forming a disc of Void Light that formed into a wormhole. The kid followed Logan through the ring of black and purple, and found himself outside. "He needs medical attention!" Logan said to a titan before reentering the building through the portal. The titans, confused by what they just witnessed, took the boy to an ambulance but watched as the portal vanished.
Angel had already led two young girls and their mother, that she had met on the second floor, to safety; now she planned to search the third floor. "Angel, your armor wasn't designed to withstand this kind of heat! In fact, it's acting like a crock-pot! You'll be cooked before long!" Alice cried.
"So will these people!" Angel shouted as she charged up the stairs. One of the planks snapped, and her foot fell through. Angel screamed as the flames began to envelope her leg. Her sweat even began to sting, but that was due to the fact the droplets were falling into her eyes.
"I got you!" Logan said as he pulled Angel's leg free. Together, the Guardians made their way upstairs.
There, an Awoken man was covering his face with a cloth to avoid breathing in too much smoke. He tried to make his way to the Guardians, but the ceiling above him fell. Fire filled the room, so Logan covered his visor. As the flames died down, the warlock saw a Ward of Dawn formed around the man, who was also awestruck. The debris was deflected, and now more fire flooded in.
"This way!" Logan said, trying to force push a path through the flames. The panicking man followed, but suddenly, the stairs caved in; he three people were stuck on the third floor.
"This place is structurally unstable!" Merlin declared as the flames closed in around them.
"You think?!" Logan replied, looking for an escape route. Down the hall was a window, for most part unaffected by the fire. "Follow me!" The warlock said to the civilian and titaness.
By this time, Logan's overcoat had burned up, only leaving his body armor. Angel's armor, admittedly poorly made, was also beginning to melt and deform. It was a miracle none of them were already dead. To help, Angel was channeling Void Light through the man to keep his body cool, but her body temperature was greatly increasing in the process.
The three people made their way down the hall. Suddenly, there was a crack, and a scream that followed. "Angel!" Logan yelled as he looked through the hole and watched as the titaness fell to the bottom floor. Just then, flames shot up and seared the warlock. Logan, not fully sure what to do, force pushed the window and helped the guy out. Together, they glided to safety where paramedics took the man to the awaiting ambulance.
"That building is coming down!" A titan said while gripping Logan's arm.
"I don't care," Logan replied. He ran back into the house, dodging more of the floor that was coming down. That building was not lasting much longer. Logan saw that the dining room table was broken in the middle, rather than turned to ash. He hopped over cross beams, then checked on Angel, who lay amidst the rubble. She was unresponsive. Logan cursed as he lifted the woman in the half-ton armor out of the charred wood and slowly melting glass. Even Alice was panicking now.
The building was beginning to fall all around the Guardians. The City Guard were hurrying Logan as he came to view of the front door, but even they were backing away; some were even keeping the crowd of bystanders away from the area.
"Come on!" Merlin shouted to Logan as he flew by his head. The warlock twisted his ankle when he stepped between two wood planks. He cursed again, but still determined to get Angel to safety, Logan continued to limp to the exit. Titans rushed for to help. Logan gritted his teeth, seeing the hope of safety ahead of them. Then the whole building collapsed.
