Thoughts of Breath of the Wild

I'm a big fan of the Legend of Zelda, I was used to the normal 3 dungeons then plot twist/master sword then seven more dungeons and final boss sequence that most games had. I was impressed by how big Hyrule was and was eager to see it, but I encountered a major problem: I didn't have a Switch. It took me about 2 months of avoiding all spoilers and videos to find one and I did and holy crap. This game blew me away. Now, this game admittedly had a weak startup, the tutorial took me about 4 hours because I exploring every single thing. The game had obvious problems like the "why do all my weapons break at the worst possible times?" scenario and the "Link its a 35 degree slope get up" scenario. The game had really good moments, whether I was riding through Hyrule on my horse or freezing Bokoblins and pushing them off cliffs, the game was endlessly fun. I've beat it on Master Mode by now and played it dry. I gave up on Trial of the Sword for Master Mode because of the Silver Lizalfos in the Beginner Trials. All that's left is the next DLC, whcih looks good. I know its old news and nobody really talks about this game, but I've heard mixed reviews about it. What do you guys think?

  • The franchise needed a shake up from the tired structure it's been using since OoT. BoTW is a breath of fresh air with something to find around every corner. I wasn't fond of the story, but it was a blast to explore Hyrule and master the mechanics.

  • Haven't finished it yet because I tend to dick around and really stretch out open world games, then take breaks and come back to them later for more dicking around. Gotta say, BotW is surprisingly polished. It's incredibly fun. Not sure what you mean about the tutorial, because as others have said I found this game to have a refreshing lack of hand-holding. I found the Master Sword by accident, for instance. I went and made DIY amiibo cards to get the more complete experience (i.e. Epona). I kind of appreciate the change from the traditional dungeon system, though I wish you could go back into Divine Beasts after completing them. Overall, BotW is a stellar game.

  • I'm probably about 75% through the game now. I'm taking my time with it, needless to say. The best game in the series since Wind Waker, and the most fun I've had with an open world game in a good while. That said, I don't think it's perfect. The total lack of traditional dungeons is the biggest sticking point for me. I understand that they wanted to break from formula and really focus on the open world aspects for BotW, but this seemed like overkill. The Devine Beasts are fun, but too short and there's only four of them, and the shrines just get tiresome after awhile.

  • Overall the game is outstanding. I still think it's the best game to release so far this year. I do have some gripes. The story is abysmal and voice acting can be cringe inducing. There was a marked lack of memorable characters compared to past Zelda games. And the dungeons, while containing some neat mechanics, were short and aesthetically uninspired. Boss battles were also some of the weakest in a Zelda series leaving the end to be a bit anti-climactic. If Nintendo uses the blueprint of this game to make a followup in the next 2-3 years ala OoT to MM and makes some improvements it would be so -blam!-ing good.

It's one of the most critically acclaimed games I've seen in quite some time and for a good reason. The game is a masterpiece, and has the best open world of any game I've played. While the story is lackluster and the music a bit underwhelming, overall the game is amazing and one I can recommend to most everyone.
I personally think anyone with eyes, two thumbs and a few other fingers, a somewhat functional brain, and is otherwise capable of playing the game should, but that's just an opinion. • Now I'm someone who generally gets bored of stories in open worlds. I usually don't even feel like exploring them. The only open world game that got me interested in its world was Infamous 2, that right there is a near perfect game for me. If it weren't for the final boss being retardedly easy it'd be a 10/10 for me. Then i played BoTW. I still don't give a shit about the story, and despite owning it i haven't even finished a 2nd devine beast (been on it for like 1.5 months, just never started back on it.). My god, id the world in BoTW fan-effin-tastic! The various ways you can interact and solve the smaller dungeons. The amount of things to do in the open world. The creativity you can have in combat. This is my first Zelda game, and my god i can see why people love them! Just so much variety in the ways you can approach just about everything! Goty 2017, nuff said. I wanna finish it, but don't because i may never go back to it. Gotta savor it just a little more.

    • Mixed reviews? That game received critical acclaim tho... I'm currently playing it as well for the first time. Everything about it is fantastic so far. It's one of those games I can play for 3 hours and it doesn't feel that long at all

GoTY material. Even if it doesn't win it, it will certainly be nominated.
