Drug test for welfare
Do you think people should have to take drug test for welfare?
According to some news outlets, it's "unconstitutional."

You know what pisses me off more than that? Going grocery shopping. I become very frustrated when I see the types that fill up two friggin carts full of food. All the while decked out in designer clothing with brand new "Jordans". Then whip out that (INSERT FOOD STAMP CARD NAME HERE) card, partially filled with MY money (likely yours too) while checking out "like a boss". Then proceed to hop in their (INSERT POPULAR NEW SUV HERE). Getting in. Driving away. Like a Boss. IMMADBRO.

I was surprised when I first found out that drug tests where not part of applying for welfare. If the government is giving people money, it should be able to check if those people are obeying its laws.

I think if someone applying for welfare takes a drug test and it is positive, they should be sent to rehab by the government for free for 1 time. They shouldn't be sent to prison or something, they just need to get some help, even if they don't want it. Then, after they've been cleaned up, give them their welfare and have them do random drug tests at least once a month to make sure they aren't on drugs again. Not scientific or anything and I have no facts to back it up, but I think if people went to rehab and overcame their drug issues, they would utilize welfare in the way it was meant to be used. To help people get back on their feet. So they don't lose their homes and have time to find a job. I had a friend that was on welfare, he wasn't a drug addict or anything, but he dropped out of high school. He then decided he wanted to turn his life around. after about 8 months of being on welfare he was able to work enough to pay for his own expenses and stopped collecting his welfare. welfare isn't always just a free handout to lazy people, there are people that use it out there, that actually aren't abusing the system. as for the people abusing the system... I have no idea on how to fix that... Maybe have people who have been on welfare for a while take classes on money management and financing? I'd have to do some research to see if anything like this has been studied.

31 RepliesNope. Invasion of personal privacy, bottom line. It's no business of anyone's what I put in my body. Regardless of the reason you might have to check. Doesn't matter anyway, there are ways around such tests (case in point, Lance Armstrong)....so it just becomes a waste of money. Where there's a will, there is a way. I'm more interested in finding these people jobs and HELPING them out, regardless of what they do in there personal lives. If they can't hold a job after being trained by the system, sorry you are cut off. IMHO.

It's not cost-effective, as seen in Florida. If it were, I would say absolutely.

yes, because welfare is supposed to help the person buy food and things they need, not buy drugs.

8 RepliesHell yes. No offense but if people REALLY need government help they by all means give it to them. However, I do not want my tax paying money to go to some family with 6 kids who are capable of working but refuse to because they rather play with the system and get free money. And from personal experience and what I've seen is that most of those people sell and do drugs. So yes make them take the damn test.

2 RepliesI see no problem with it, and I don't understand why anyone would have an issue with unless they are using illegal substances. Bottom line, you are accepting (we're not debating reason) government money, period. If the government wants to put a stipulation, not to mention a reasonable stipulation, that is entirely their preragotive.

12 RepliesGovernor Rick Scott implemented an idea like this in Florida but it was struck down due to a conflict of interest (he had financial ties to a firm that benefited from the profits of charging the government for their services to drug test people). I've always preferred the idea of community service requirements for unemployment insurance. Nothing crazy, just like ten or fifteen hours a month.

2 RepliesI think I'm big on personal privacy, but after seeing this idk, I kinda like the idea. If people are tapping into money from others as help then that kind of already gives up your privacy. I want to find a way to help folks with a rough go, or certainly help families with 6 kids. But I could see a drug test being useful. But then what? You say drug test for welfare. What if they fail? Then what? Take money away from them or their family? Or help more? Very interesting idea.

6 RepliesI think that it would probably end up costing the state(s) more than it saves them. Proper drug tests (i.e., not the one you can buy at the drug store) aren't cheap, and anyone who gets a positive will no doubt be able to contest it and have a re-do, by which time they'll have either abstained or bought de-tox supplies to get clean, thus resulting in two tests and a continuing welfare recipient.

I'm saying this from experience, that I've seen numerous drug dealers and users abuse their government aid. Sadly, a few of my relatives being them..
