Earth needs an asteroid defense system. I don't want to live underground for years and then come up to die in an endless winter.

Asteroids come towards Earth all the time, but they're too small to survive entry to the Earth's atmosphere. The earth doesn't need to waste time and money on a defence system that we'll have a miniscule chance of using. If there ever is a problem, we could probably just launch something at the asteroid, blowing it up into pieces too small to survive the atmosphere.
