Following yesterday’s shocking announcement that EA finally caved in and removed (for now) all microtransaction elements in Star Wars Battlefront II, it seems we now know a bit more on what happened behind the scenes.
According to a source that wishes to remain anonymous, Disney talked with top-level EA executives over the growing backlash (something that was corroborated by The Wall Street Journal who reported that Consumer Products and Interactive Media boss Jimmy Pitaro sent a message to EA about their concerns) regarding Star Wars Battlefront II’s bad press when it comes to loot crates, and how some see it as “gambling.”
Based on the info we received, it states that both parties agreed that the Battlefront II microtransactions model needs to be revamped to stave off further backlash. Also, it mentions how Disney was “unhappy” with how long EA took effective action regarding the situation since it has evolved enough that the backlash could potentially harm the Star Wars IP given The Last Jedi is hitting theaters soon.
Possibly the biggest thing though, is how Disney apparently gave a less-than-direct threat that EA could lose the Star Wars publishing exclusivity rights if things didn’t improve. The House of Mouse had concerns about the exclusivity deal with EA due to the press backlash, investigations regarding gambling, and the bad press involved.
MP1st has reached out to EA, with a rep for the publisher stating, “we are not commenting on that” as the only statement so far.
Once we know more details, or if EA issues a more formal statement, we’ll update the story.

You know something is wrong when Battlefront 1 has a total population of 10k concurrent players since the release. Another sad flop is surely expecting. Headlines like "most downvoted comment in ''''Reddit'''' history" and "Belgian Gambling Commission investigating Battlefront 2" are possibly the worst kinds of things to be seeing in the news about a universally beloved franchise whose new movie installment is due in a month. Disney approved the business model, but they expected EA to have its shit together and deal with the resulting backlash by any means necessary, not stick their fingers in their ears and sing "haters gonna hate." The mighty mouse is angry that EA tried to wait out the outrage instead of immediately removing lootboxes when people started getting absolutely fuming with fury.
EA's was just in regular "f8 teh haters lolz" mode. EA may not care about their own reputation at all, but when the nefarious mouse gives you control of an entire medium of one of their franchises, you protect the integrity of the said mouse's brand.

I can't ever side with Disney until they bring Split/Second back...
-
If anyone’s forgetting Disney owns marvel to, so them taking away Star Wars rights might be a good thing
-
Disney sucks. They -blam!-ed with the Tower of Terror.

1st: I lost my shit at the image alone, with the mickey hands holding a blaster at EA XD 2nd: Disney should buy Bf2, since it’s clear EA is no longer competent to do anything with the game 3rd. Fuck EA. Plain and simple
Mickey's lawyer said to him, "Mickey, you can't sue Minnie for divorce based on her "being crazy"." Mickey responded, "I didn't say she was crazy, I said she was fncking Goofy!"
I hope EA looses the rights and it goes to people who care.

Well, it was to be expected that Disney would not be too pleased about a Star wars game getting such a bad rep. I think that EA is lucky if they can keep the license. I saw this coming from a mile away as well as goverment regulations, and we all know how good goverments are in seperating the good from the bad. Like I said in another post EA has made a mess out of it and is mudding the waters for all of us, nothing good will come out of this.
You know something is wrong when Battlefront 1 has a total population of 10k concurrent players since the release.
This isn't so strange and not indicative of new game sales. Not gonna' disagree that the micro-transactions in SWBF2 lost me as a customer. Even after the announcement by EA, there is the rationale concern that this is only temporary. Even if micro-transactions never return, the upgrade system will always mean that new players are at a disadvantage. The longer consumers go without buying SWBF2, the less likely they are to buy it. I hope this is a turning point for micro-transactions.
-
Microtransactions help for having free DLC in a games lifetime, which EA was going to give. The microtransactions (which, by the way, you can earn with in game currency and challenges, so simply playing the game can get you rewards) in this game are not crazily overpowered if you actually play the game. Somebody with zero cards can decimate somebody with the best upgrades. The community gives this well made game a horrible look because it has microtransactions (in 2017, a year which many games have this). They are never forced to buy them, nor are they forced to buy the game and play it. If you don't like That, then don't play it and complain about it. Battlefront 2 is a great star wars experience unlike any other. Sounds great, looks great, and plays very greatly.

This is what I was hoping for when all this bullshit started. It's about time Disney stepped in. They need to take the rights to star wars away from EA and let some other studios have a shot. They certainly couldn't do any worse from a PR perspective. Keep throwing your bullshit flag on EA people, because even if they don't give a shit, it looks like we've hit critical mass to get the Mouse's attention. And Disney doesn't -blam!- around.
-
There was a anonymous source that this didn't happen.
-
"Be careful not to choke on your aspirations..."
-
The P2W aspect was disgusting, and awful, but the game play itself is phenomenal to say the least.
-
Maybe we could get our linear uncharted style game finally. First 1313 then visceral.
-
Normally I would of vouched for the ip to go to someone like respawn who was already working on a star wars game but given recent events......OH WAIT
-
EA deserves a reality check. I paid $80 bucks for this game... SO FIX IT!
-
You know you -blam!-ed up hard when Disney decides to no longer be the nice guy.
-
I'm unhappy with how long it takes to get on a ride at disneyland.
-
No wonder they needed a Respawn so bad, heh heh heh
-
Honestly, take away the exclusivity. Let ea keep Battlefront. But if another studio say "hey we like Star Wars, can we make a game about __?" I say, let them. Give EA some competition
-
How much of Disney stepping in had to do with the threats of boycotting the movie next month. If the movie wasn’t next month would Disney even care
-
EA were happy to reduce this or alter that. Then all of a sudden they're removing them temporarily. I'm no expert, but I think it's safe to assume, somewhere, someone got an arse kicking, or threatened with something. Whether it was what you posted, or something else ? The preverbial has hit the fine. It's good though, many of us have been annoyed about this for years, I'm happy it's in the mainstream media.
For years, critics and gaming psychologists have criticized loot boxes. While it may not legally be gambling, they say, the same intermittent nature of rewards and spending is in place. “If you put it in fundamental terms, it’s really the same thing,” said Kimberly Young, a licensed psychologist and founder of the Center for Internet Addiction. “It’s called gambling.” Loot boxes were popularized in China and Korea, where the practice is now regulated. Just this year, developers in China became required to disclose the probabilities of loot boxes in popular games like “Overwatch” and “Hearthstone.” In 2012, South Korea introduced a law that would require major gaming companies to add features that let parents limit how long their children can play the video games. “Americans are falling so far behind what other countries are doing, and it’s all about profit,” Young said. “You have gaming lobbyists who don’t want us to talk about this. We just haven’t had it come to a head yet.”

Also, it mentions how Disney was “unhappy” with how long EA took effective action regarding the situation since it has evolved enough that the backlash could potentially harm the Star Wars IP given The Last Jedi is hitting theaters soon.
Quite the opposite. The free extra publicity will generate more sales and more interest.
