Raid etiquette for newbs

I've been finding a lot of recent raids with 310 or 312's basically saying they need help, so here's a quick reminder of raid etiquette since Destiny 1. This is NOT a complete list frankly because gamers of all shapes and sizes do exist and thus? This will change with EACH raid group you join. Ask if your unsure. #1. If you die? You've done something wrong. This is your biggest and number 1 issue with ANY raid team. The raid team which loses even a single member is typically going to fail. Especially with new players to it. Here's three very quick tips to help keep you alive: - Your resillience stat should ideally be 4 or 5 out of 10. Always. If it drops to 3 for any reason? You can be one shot melee'd by powerful enemies. - Your secondary weapon should ideally be matched against an enemy type in that encounter. If it is not? As in void and arc enemies are present and you use solar? You're not ready for the raid. It is very important you have strong weapons to deal with strong adds for any encounter. - Knowing your role is more important then knowing the fight. If you are an argos runner and your job is to drop the mines with the craniums? Do NOT stick around to deal with adds when it is your turn to be taking out those mines. Your defender should be capable for their role, same as you. #2. Know your raid leader All raid groups will ideally have one. The only important reason is this person is designated to make final judgment calls where others will argue until the sun goes down and comes up again. Besides that, they also coordinate and help facilitate the group. Where someone with two scout rifles is doing argos phase 1 as a defender on solar side for example? Not the best idea. The leader would ideally ask for them to change loadouts if they are dying. #3. Listen and Learn This rule will be broken, but if a raid leader tells you to do something? Just do it. The entire reason raid teams typically fail is because a raid leader will explain what needs to happen, someone doesn't do what they need to do, and it ends up a field wipe. If this continues, people will end up arguing and eventually leave. It's very well known. It's well documented. #4. LFG raids should not be your primary raiding source I certainly help sherpa people along and Destiny 2 is pretty consistent with it's mechanics being straight forward, but my normal raid team and I have been doing it for the past 15 years. We know each other better to the point we can execute better strategies with bigger teams simply because we've done it so long. Plus it is a lot more fun. #5. If you do not know the raid? Know your weapons This is probably the number 1 thing I can tell someone beforehand. You don't have to have the very best guns. That level of difficulty is called Prestige and only the very best guns should be used for it. Knowing your aggressive hand cannon? Knowing it's stability and recoil effect when you fire it? That's essentially your practical raid requirement. That's it. Simply know it. Know how well it performs. IF by some miracle of a chance it doesn't live up to potential? Have another backup, of a different weapon type, but still pushes out a lot of overall damage. One last thing: The greater then impact? The faster you will eliminate adds and be able to focus on other things like helping a teammate. #6. Sherpas are there to help If you are new? Or perhaps a 310, 312, 315 for a normal 300 raid with no experience? Simply look for the ones who do it. Sherpas are not available all the time, but they are there to make sure you get through an encounter easier then if you just play tested it. Feel free to add #7 and onward or comment about an experience you've had.

  • Well, I've read nearly the whole thread and I surprised there was so much blowback - undeserved in my opinion. I play Destiny almost exclusively since Destiny 1 and only ever done 2 Raids, so while I am experienced I am an effective newb to Raiding. I'd like to do some more if I can carve out the time, and this list of tips is really really helpful and makes good sense. I think it makes good sense to have the most experienced player leader, or if you are a novice to the Raid, at least someone who can bark instructions so you don't screw up or make a rookie mistake. It would make the experience far more enjoyable. I note the negative comments are probably from people who are experienced at Raids, and if they aren't how would they know this isn't good advice? If you are experienced then it doesn't apply because you know what to expect, but if you are inexperienced at them like myself, then advice like this is incredibly welcome. So thank you for the post. It is highly appreciated.

I can't really talk about D2, considering I barely play it, but I used to sherpa a tonne in the original. And the main thing I looked for when picking people to help was honesty. I don't care how experienced you are, as long as you're good-natured, willing to learn and participate and don't lie about your experience (it ruins the run for everyone)

#7: If the Raid Leader presents a strategy for clearing a section, and you are unfamiliar with that strategy, SPEAK UP! Leviathan comes to mind for this because there seems to be 50-leven ways to clear the Relay Race room (forgot the name for it) #7.5: If you think you have a better strategy for clearing an area, wait until the leader’s strategy has failed multiple times. It’s very annoying when you have people arguing about whose way is better, and if you’re only used to doing it one way, it can’t hurt to learn a different way. #8: Know your guardian’s jump! Seems like common sense but I’ve been in a lot of raids where people switch to their Alts and end up forgetting that Warlocks can’t jump.

        • Great post, and I agree with all of this. I would change "do not argue" to "Listen and Learn" as I find those that want to talk and not listen will -blam!- the group every time.

        • If you sherpa: Be patient and helpful. Give em tips and explain WHY they have to do it in a certain way. The new guys need to understand the raid and its mechanics. Won't help them if they use lfg afterwards and simply have to say "well...one guy told me what to do. Have no clue why though". If it comes to that: You failed miserably as a sherpa. If you don't want to sherpa than simply don't. In terms of general rules: Have fun. Be honest. Get used to being in an encounter sometimes longer than normal. If you are new and are looking for a group: Tell the others. Otherwise they'll think you already know and get pissed because you didn't tell them in advance. If you're looking for members: Again tell em if you're new. If you're not make clear right away if you want experienced guys or if you don't mind new guys. oh and did I mention to have fun? Well HAVE FUN

        • I’m 335 on ps, 333 ish on Xbox. Many times flawless and ran all d1 raids. But found it was very difficult to get help with leviathan. Im a 30 year old now retired US Marine, always respectful unless disrespected. Kids in this community are something else.

          • Hence why I don't raid. Having to NOT die is just too much pressure for a "video game" where the object "is to have fun", or so it used to be until Bungie decided to put our a raid called Leviathan. One big assed puzzle where one simple mistake leads to one wipe after the other. No thanks. I can go outside and try and drop trees exactly where I want them to for frustration. I don't need video games doing that.

              1. The things that killed me most were ledges and rocket launchers. Being banned from explosives prevented one of these, but every raid had "make sure claymore can't blow himself up" on the checklist. Two shotguns was fine though. And my role is to fight, why else would you bring a celt? 2. We never operated with a "leader." We knew what each person was capable of (we were Gears, teamwork is what we do), and we made suggestions and altered plans when we saw a problem. 3. The only time we argued was when someone tried to take control. Raid "leaders" tended to cause tension when they assumed we were all locked into a job. If someone had an issue, we'd switch around. We told new players what each of us usually does, then let them pick where they thought they could work best, not "you're new so you go here." If they wanted to defend something I'd go with them. If they wanted to run something, we'd cover them. If they wanted to crowd control, we ran over the S.O.S. list and let them loose. We let them try whatever they wanted, experience is the best way to learn and see where you fit best. We've done it, they haven't, so the team is there to help them learn not dictate them as a tag along. 4. Nothing can replace good friends. Well, ____---/--\..______________.¤. \\\ _/_---- 《 ____》- -- ______. □|=== | |||||_. 》_______. ""| ~~~~ | '' _> /// 》/ [:] \○/ --|/--|/--|/--|/--|/ /_/ \__|__| 5. It may be prestige but there are no "very best" guns. Use the gun you like most or at least are comfortable with due to power level restrictions. 6. We have sherpas? Are we climbing Everest? Just shoot a message at the tower. Ask around, it is a "social" space after all. 7. Should actually be #1, but it's simple: Bring plenty of bullet. Don't think that matters in destiny 2 though since you don't have ammo synths anymore. 8. Create an S.O.S. list. It's important for teams to designate targets and call them out, but you need to know what to throw bullets at even without hearing a callout. The handy Shoot On Sight list will help with this. Run the list by newer members, and explain why we shoot it on sight.

You're not ready for the raid.
I thought they revamped that system. A solar urials gift would do just as much damage to a void-shielded enemy as a void urials gift would. The only advantage to matching your element is an underwhelming elemental explosion once the shield is broken. Correct me if I'm wrong.

                          • None of these really help . . . Anyone. They just tell people to stick with the leader trope. That strategy works just as well as any other, with unique upsides and downsides. You Don't have to have a raid leader to win easily. I'd also argue on the resilience part; there is no change in survivability in res. 0 - 10. You want to balance mobility and recovery or max recovery. Yes this is a glitch. No it hasn't been patched.

                            • There are some really helpful people out there. Five people who did not know me from Adam helped me try get through the Lair raid and they could have not been more helpful. Clear direction and very forgiving when I screwed up. We got got to the Argus damage phase but a family dinner event interfered so did not finish but did appreciate the help. We need to be a bit more kind to new raiders I fond it quite confusing.
