3DS Thoughts?

Worth It

Not Worth It

18

Recently I've been debating whether to pick up a 3DS. I really liked some of the GBA titles, and want to revisit those series. I can also afford to spend the couple hundred dollars without too much trouble. Is the 3DS good? How are the new Fire Emblem and Pokémon games? For reference the last ones I played were Sacred Stones and Emerald, respectively. Edit: Who down voted? This isn't exactly an objectionable thread. Update: I just ordered a 2DS XL. Should be a good time.

  • Definitely. I have a New 3DS and it's a blast to play on. Tons of great exclusives (Majora's Mask, Pokémon X and Y, etc.) and the fact you can play them on the go is a big seller.

  • VERY worth it. It's probably the best handheld (other than switch). It has many great games which I think are also processed fast through the new version.

  • Worth it imo. Still play it. Games worth playing imo: -Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Link Between Worlds are good/great Zelda games. -Fire Emblem Awakening has a good story and good for a tactics rpg. In hard difficulty it's not challenging if you grind for certain units and in lunatic difficulty it's hard af. Good nonetheless. -Fire Emblem Fates Conquest only if you just want a challenging game. The other two FE Fates games are Birthright and Revelations, but both are too easy, even in the hardest difficulties. All three of them have a terrible script though. The idea had of that story had much more potential but the devs decided to turn it into a waifu simulator and cash grab. -Fire Emblem Echoes has two protagonists, so it has two different stories that are played at once. One of the stories is great and the other is ok. Game is challenging and sometimes tedious but in the end I was sad that I finished it cuz I loved it. I'd nut to the music from that game. It's just amazing. -Super Smash Bros. Never gets old. -Pokemon games are Pokemon games. I enjoyed all of the ones that came for 3ds so worth it imo.

I would say get the new 2ds xl. Not as expensive, comes with a charger and you'll have some leftover cash for a couple games. To answer your question about the downvote. There is an/are individual(s) that wander the forums simply to dv everyone's post.

  • If youre going for Pokémon and Fire Emblem an 3DS probably will be fine for you. For Pokémon there is the 6th and 7th Gen available as well as the first two gens (download only though). Gen 6 has the games X and Y and Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. The first are new games the latter remakes of the third generation. Recommend both, but ORAS is way bigger and if you had to choose get one either OR or AS. The 7th Gen of Pokémon felt like a kind of reboot or spin-off, since the region and trials instead of gyms were very unfamiliar to me. The gameplay didnt change though. Recommend to buy Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon, because they have more to offer than normal Sun Moon and the story doesnt differ too much that its noteworthy. The available Fire Emblem games are Awakening, Fates and Echoes: Shadows of Valentia as well as the spin-off Fire Emblem Warriors. I dont recommend the last though, since its awful on the 3DS. Awakening basically saved the series. It is a good game, but has its weaknesses, like the not so great story and its easy difficulty. Yet I definately recommend it. Fates is... well long story... lets start with its 3 paths/storys. If you want a chilled game get Birthright since its easy as -blam!-. If you want a challenge and the best maps get Conquest (and I mean a challenge). If you want the "real" conclusion of everything in the story and all characters get Revelation (which you can only buy if you have one of the other two). The story itself is bullshit. Its weak, the main character dull and the plotholes and weird decisions are endless. The gameplay on the other hand is amazing imo. I cant really complain about it. I kinda recommend it, but only for the gameplay and only Revelation, since I like to have all available characters Echoes: Shadows of Valentia is a special case. Its an remake of Fire Emblem: Gaiden the second entry of the series. While the base gameplay doesnt change there are some unfamiliar changes like no weapon triangle, 5+ attack range archers, grinding (yup grinding), dungeon crawling (im serious) and third tier promotions. Yet imo all of these are great. And its the first FE that has FULL voice acting and OMFG is it good! I played through the game several times already and its the first game I dont skip scenes, because I adore the voice acting so much! Definately recommend this gem!! Wow that turned out way longer than expected... If you even read this far thank you and dont feel afraid of asking more questions if you have some ^_^

  • Definitely worth getting, the 3DS isnt exactly expensive to get (it wasnt really expensive to begin with and now it is even cheaper), and it has a great lineup of games. I personally love the fire emblem series and find both awakening and fates to be great games (awakening has a good story, while fates is lacking in the story department but has amazing gameplay, especially conquest). Pokemon sun/moon are actually the first pokemon games that i have enjoyed for a fairly long time now. I personally hated black/white, and disliked all others since then (x/y werent exactly bad, but more so unmemorable and boring), sun and moon feel new, and feel like they have added back in some of that innovation that pokemon had. And i mean that is just listing fairly popular and standard game titles, there are plenty of smaller interesting games to play, including many rereleases of older games (so happy the pokemon trading card game got rereleased). The library of good games available is fairly large at this point, though its growth is slowing down due to the switch being somewhat of a handheld as well, and nintendo trying to merge the two markets (which i dont necessarily see as a bad thing, just means less for 3DS, but it also means better quality hand held games).

    • FE: Awakening, FE: Fates, Pokemon Sun/Moon, Smash 3DS, and many other games make the handheld a good choice. Though, I imagine that Nintendo will have some bombshell game announcements for E3 that might persuade you to get a Switch instead.

      • The 3DS has what are, in my opinion, the best Kirby games, being Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot. It also lets you play Super Star Ultra, and Squeak Squad, meaning if you also pick up the Dream Collection: Special Edition on Wii, the only main series games you’d be missing are Amazing Mirror, and of course, Star Allies. Not to mention the amazing spinoffs, like Kirby the Fighters Deluxe, Blowout Blast, Battle Royale, and the kinda meh spinoff, Team Clash Deluxe! That alone makes it worth it, imo, but the 3DS Pokémon games are pretty great. Alpha Sapphire is terribly easy, but was good fun, and Y was fun despite its rather lackluster bad guys, and annoying roller skates. I thought Sun & Moon were smazing myself. Lots of adorable new Pokémon. I do prefer the gym system, but the new system wasn’t bad. Never played Fire Emblem, and.. Eh.. Honestly I use my 3DS almost exclusively for Kirby, but there’s some other good titles as well! Arguably the best Zelda game, Majora’s Mask, is remastered, along with its overrated older brother OoT. Mario Maker’s good fun, except when you aren’t used to the controls and keep sprinting off cliffs. The Dark Witch saga (some Mega Man inspired platformers) seem pretty great, though I’ve only played the first one, amd outside of the main Kirby platformers, you also have Canvas Curse, and Mass Attack!
