Depriving players of choice is not an improvement. (My main example with this is with progression.)
I'll keep it as short and simple as need be, and I will only throw out one point that I hope the community can agree on.
In Yr 1, on the completion of dailies and raids, you were guaranteed materials (Ascendant Shards or Energy). From this, players had the option to level up their RNG based rewards and progress the ones of their choosing. As a result, their light increased and they progressed in levels.

In the current system (D2's), for Milestones, you are guaranteed an RNG drop higher than your highest overal power level. And due to infusion requiring an item of a similar type, players lack the option over what they progress. (As in, if a player gets a hand-cannon, they can only progress a hand cannon.)
The current system isn't bad, but depriving players of choice over what they progress is not an improvement. Just like how the streamlining of subclasses is not considered to be an improvement. Why? Because players then lack choices over the way they play/progress.
[I'm aware this is a late topic, but I need to get this point out.]
That is all.
