That Clicking Sound
Act III Part 1 Archive
Surprised by the instant sensation of solid ground beneath his boot after taking the first step through the portal, the Onyx Guard is given no time to ponder the concept of such travel before the new surroundings demand his attention. Filled with movement and life, the massive space to which the portal opens is filled with the clangs and hums of large machinery, the slithering sounds of wet organic material, and the clicking from numerous amounts of light foot traffic. The Gear acts on instinct, darting quickly to take cover behind one of the large, pus covered metallic pillars that holds a slightly lowered ceiling above the portal in hopes of avoiding detection. He flicks the safety off on his rifle and quickly peers around the edge of the pillar's wide base in preparation for retaliation. After confirming a lack of hostile aggression, he shuffles forward and leans in slightly to better study the environment. The general shape of the massive room is vaguely cylindrical, the exit of the portal opening to a connected ring of landings that overlook a solid lower floor, but granting sight to countless more rings that lead into an infinite darkness high above. Between the jutting rings, massive mechanical arms trade and position sheets of metal infused with bone, masses of organic growth, and level platforms that move smaller units between levels in a dance of beautiful precision. The solid bottom floor rises at an angle as it moves towards the center, leveling out roughly a third of the way in to a partially constructed metallic ring of perverted technology. The walls between the portal rings that didn't house construction arms reveal themselves to be hollow clusters and lined networks of Hive worms in all stages between egg to pupae; pulsing masses of which excitedly wriggling like maggots to as they rush to consume the fresh vomit of hellish creatures with bulbous stomachs that quickly traverse the walls on spider-like legs. The corpses of Vex soldiers scattered throughout like decorative tensile, their eyes still faintly glowing as if forced to endure the never ending insult of watching their bodies used as feeding troughs and tools to aid the building progress of organic filth. Lee is first to follow through the portal, a pistol aiming downward as he steps forward into the room. The Onyx Guard quickly waves a hand in front of the glowing blue eyes of his helmet to grab Lee's attention before motioning to join him behind cover. Patterson is the second to pass through, dropping his jaw in a transfixed stare at the hellscape before him. He remains motionless as Bee passes through behind him. She shifts mid sprint toward cover to grab his forearm and drag him forward, throwing him into wall behind Lee as she takes a defensive stance to cover the other side of the pillar's base. The Gear takes another quick glance around the side to ensure the four have remained unnoticed amongst the chaotic flow of movement before Lee lightly brings a fist down on the high right side of his back plate, getting the Gear's attention to make a quick gesture with his thumb in a silent command to swap places. Lee steps forward, his back against the wall as the Guard steps out and back to fill the empty space. Patterson steps out slightly and moves to Lee's side in an attempt to gaze around the corner. Lee peeks around the side, putting a low hand out in command for the other members to remain behind him as soon as he spots the ring being built on the lowest level. "Gate below us, big one," he whispers. "Is it active?" Patterson asks. Lee takes a longer look around the side before bringing his head back around and replying, "Looks unfinished. Bee, toss a..." A large mechanical boom erupts from below them causing both Bee and Lee poke out their heads to see around the side of the pillar's base. The section holding the incomplete ring begins to twist and descend, arms unfolding from the newly uncovered walls to continue the work of those above. From all but one of the gates within the newly outstretched ring below emerge a plethora of Hive warriors, each group hauling components to add to the central ring. And from the final gate emerge two Hallowed knights, taking the stance of honorguards to each side of the opening as they make way for their master.
