Well first off we are refering to her character. The comic is her character because Destinys lore is all outside the game. In the actual game she has no -blam!-ing lore whatsoever. All we know is she a guardian named Ana Bray that wants to learn about rasputin. Nothing personal about her other than she wants to know her old identity which is not explored at all. In the terms of the comic it is entirely shoved down your throat she is a lesbian and that is what we are referencing. If she gets one line saying something about her orientation then its fine but Its a constant thing that serves no purpose to the plot. I used the term "Diverse Feature" because I was referring to forced diversity in general not just Ana Bray. Not all forced Diversity is sexual orientation. (Just watch The Last The Jedi)

So here's the thing, it sounds like your real problem is not diversity... It's bad writing. But when you bring diversity in as the scapegoat, your muddling the message with prejudice. If you really think it is ok that Ana Bray is gay, than you just have a problem with the way her character is being portrayed. Everyone who uses the term forced diversity comments on the fact that it is bad writing; the problem being, it's dificult for straight white men to write from the viewpoint of a gay female. Your problem, if you are a tolerant individual, is not forced diversity, it's just bad writing. You want to see gay characters, but you want them to be written better. Am I correct? If I am not. Then you are using bad writing as an excuse and a mask for your prejudice towards having gay characters in games. There is no forced diversity just bad writing, and if you maintain that it is a thing, you're creating a toxic and dangerous conversation that alienates the minority and perpetuates an unfortunate stereotype about sexuality in video games. Does this make sense or do you maintain? EDIT: Also, I really don't see how Art or any medium needs to follow certain rules about how much gay is okay. And were talking about Ana Bray, not the last jedi, please stay focused. We're all aware of the meaning of the word diversity.

  • I guess I didn’t make myself clear. Forced diversity IS bad writing I agree and yes that is my problem. However bad writing is not the whole part. Bad writing is bad, I do not enjoy it but it is simply, again, bad writing I can just look over it and ignore it. Forced diversity is bad writing but not just is it bad in terms of the words that are written and their context it is the premise of the character. For example. A character who is poorly written in destiny is Zavala. I strongly dislike Zavala because he has no development and acts totally different between games. However Zavala is just a plain annoying character because of how he is written. Ana however is all of ur above except the only thing about her is her sexuality. While Zavala is monotone and boring Ana is boring oh and by the way she is a lesbian. Zavala has no character development. Ana has no character development oh but she’s a lesbian. The point is her sexuality has nothing to do with her personal story or her character. In no lore or the Zavala trailer did you see anything about Zavala sexuality since it served no purpose to the story. But Ana for some reason needs every other page to be about her sexuality. My problem is not that she is a lesbian it is that her sexuality has no purpose in the story EXCEPT to say she is a lesbian. If her sexuality was some huge story driven plot that effects her character than I’m all for it. But it isn’t

...Have you not noticed that every character has one key feature that becomes the static feature? You just laid out my point for me... Zavala is the tight wad, Ikora is the mystical one, Caydes the funny guy, Hawthornes the loner... Ana is the gay one... You're problem is still with bad writing. Having only one character trait is bad enough, but it seems to me, based on your responses; that in your mind the fact that the character trait is her being a lesbian is too far. Why? is being gay not a valid character trait? You're maintaining this standpoint but your not acknowledging the fact that it has nothing to do with her being gay, and everything to do with her character development being two dimensional, and bland. Forced Diversity is not a thing. It's a mask for prejudice, and it sounds to me like you don't need it, I wouldn't take you for a bigot. EDIT: Also, Sexuality is pushed in almost every medium including games. Would it be safe to say there would be no moral outcry if Camrin had been a man? I don't think so, it would have been dismissed as bad writing, or not even mentioned. What exactly is it about homosexuality that garners these responses? And the bigger question why not demand better gay characters, that are written well?

  • I just stated if anas sexuality actually mattered in the story that would be ok and I would be all for it. If you left out her entire sexuality it wouldn’t break the story at all. Let’s use Ikora as an example. She is considered a minority (in the US where the game is made) however that is not everywhere in her character. Not once in all of destiny is Ikoras race mentioned. If she said it once just exposition that would be fine but since it’s a physical trait they never even have to say it. Ikora is a strong female character of color who I actually think is written relatively well compared to most other characters excluding cayde. So again if Ana is a character who is very strong in the context of the games lore as she is a legendary gunslinger. If she mentions once she had a girlfriend then that would be ok by me. But it feels like every act is quickly followed by a reminder she is a lesbian. I agree my problem is with bad writing but I am also tying to convey forced diversity is real and is fundamentally bad writing. Bad writing is bad and forced diversity is bad writing and then some.

  •
I just stated if anas sexuality actually mattered in the story that would be ok and I would be all for it. If you left out her entire sexuality it wouldn’t break the story at all.
Well no, you're right, we wouldn't be talking here having this conversation at all. and thing would stay the same
Good art makes you think and discuss, whether Destiny is good art is up for an entirely different debate
We could go into a very deep conversation about the differences in struggle between the wider gay and black communities, but you're arguing apples against oranges in that case. One is a skin color which can be seen, the other is a personal orientation that is not always quite so apparent. You need to expose it. They exposed it too much and not for the right reasons. It's not forced diversity, it's bad writing by someone who thinks they're doing good. Words matter and forced diversity implies the wrong message... Instead of coming across as 'Ana Bray's character deserved better treatment, and the fact that they tried to capitalize on her homosexuality as a selling point is shameful' you come across as 'I didn't need to see so much gay, and it bothered me' I'm not trolling you bro, I'm just saying "forced diversity" is a bad choice of words
