You don't seem to grasp the fact a characters sexuality is irrelevant to the story. So why have a character make note of it? What purpose, as far as the game is concerned, does it serve? The answer in my opinion, is none that I can see. So, is her characters sexuality being "forced"? Yes, in a manner of speaking, it is. Which begs the question, why? What was their motivation for doing so? Are they trying to make a sociopolitical statement, in a video game? We get enough of that as it is and I personally don't feel it's necessary to bring that, in any form, into a purely entertainment realm which people engage in to escape reality. And video games like Destiny are sci-fi fantasy and should remain as such whenever possible. Note: I'm not bigoted , racist, or homophobic IRL. However, Destiny is not real life and certain aspects of reality have no place in it other than to make some kind of statement. So in that regard I agree with the OP's viewpoint in essence.

  • If she were straight and had a relationship with a man in the comic would you be saying the exact same thing?

Yes, as long as it had no bearing on the story. I don't care who someone is dating or what their sexuality is as long as it has no bearing or impact on the story. The same is true in reality. If I don't need to know then why make a point of it? It's not a joke or a funny story. For the same reason I don't need to know how many bowel movements you've had so far today. Btw, that's a joke, but it's also true. War story: Had a dude inform me once that the temp was 126 degrees (Fahrenheit) although I never asked. I did however, realize it was hot since it was always about that hot in Iraq at that time of the year, in that location as everyone knew. That said, I thanked him nevertheless. I also instructed him to keep me informed of the current OAT every hour, on the dot, for the next 24 hrs. Which he dutifully did. That said, it was the least of his problems for a day or so afterwards, since everyone had great fun at his expense. Hell, even he liked all the attention. That sort of thing was commonplace and always entertaining. Just so you know where I'm coming from with regard to such things.

  • But that doesn't make any sense. They decided to make a relationship a part of the story, so who the other person is does have bearing on it. The gender of the other person shouldn't matter, but apparently to some people it does. Are you suggesting that it would have been better to just never give the identity of her partner? I fail to see how that makes a romantic story better. It's one thing to say that the story shouldn't have had a romance element to it (personally I would have preferred that), but it's entirely different to say that they shouldn't reveal anything about the second half of the romance. That's kind of an important element. What you decide is or is not a relevant detail is telling.

I don't see why we needed to know any of it. It did nothing to help us with regard to our overall mission. Nor was it entertaining in any significant way, e.g: comical, etc. Like the OP said, it felt forced.

  • Ok, so you have a problem with the romance part not adding anything interesting (at least how it was written). That we can agree on.

  • Cool. Btw, I don't mind if someone disagrees with whatever I say as long as they make a valid and pertinent argument or ask such questions, which you did. So thank you.

  • You can't really disagree with someone unless you fully understand their position.

  • True, to a degree. Although it's not always an absolute. There are few absolutes in reality.

Would I alone make a point of it? I can't answer that honestly since it's a hypothetical question. I'm not trying to evade the question nor am I being hypocritical but it would depend on how and why it was made a point. For example, if we needed to know as part of the story then I wouldn't have an issue with it. Why would anyone? If, however, it was brought up for no apparent reason other than to make a point of it then again it begs the question, why? What point was the writer trying to make? Was it an agenda of some kind? Perhaps that is a part of what the OP meant by bad writing. Although I'm not trying to to second guess them or put words in their mouth. I should add that if a character makes a joke or is comical in some way (Cayde for instance) it's fine. It's entertainment and lightens the mood. His banter with Ikora was entertaining. However, a characters sexuality is irrelevant if it has no bearing on the story. Thus we simply don't need to know it. So again, why make a point of it?

  • Let's not get hypothetical then. I'm sure you've played other video games, and I'm sure some of them have had a romantic relationship between a man and a women be a primary component in the story. Did you go on the forums for those games and complain about forced heterosexuality? Did you even give it a second thought? The problem with the Ana Bray story is that the romantic relationship doesn't really add a lot to the Destiny narrative in general. That's an issue of bad writing. But people aren't framing it that way on here, they are focusing on the sexuality of the romantic relationship. That's the problem.

  • I agree with you in regard to the writing. In fact that was and has been my entire point in every post I've made in the regard. And I don't go on any forums to complain about anything. Nor am I complaining here.
