Would I alone make a point of it? I can't answer that honestly since it's a hypothetical question. I'm not trying to evade the question nor am I being hypocritical but it would depend on how and why it was made a point.
For example, if we needed to know as part of the story then I wouldn't have an issue with it. Why would anyone? If, however, it was brought up for no apparent reason other than to make a point of it then again it begs the question, why? What point was the writer trying to make? Was it an agenda of some kind? Perhaps that is a part of what the OP meant by bad writing. Although I'm not trying to to second guess them or put words in their mouth.
I should add that if a character makes a joke or is comical in some way (Cayde for instance) it's fine. It's entertainment and lightens the mood. His banter with Ikora was entertaining. However, a characters sexuality is irrelevant if it has no bearing on the story. Thus we simply don't need to know it. So again, why make a point of it?
