So in a nutshell:
Don't focus a character's story around their own archetype, but rather their own actions that DIRECTLY impacts the plot. Said character's archetype (being gay, or any other character archetype) should be the icing/sprinkles on top of the base of the cake that represents the story. Not just a shit load of icing and a sub par base cake making it unbalanced.
