Fireteam Ashen(11): Learning, Training
Looking for a different chapter? Here's the Master Post.
Patriot blew the dust off of an old tome before handing it to Validus. "This one is the legend of Saint 14. He was a master Titan, one of the most powerful to have ever existed. Give it a read and tell me what you can learn about Titans from it."
He could feel his light draining. He pulled all of it into one last hope. He reeled back and bam! His helm found purchase, breaking through just above the Kell’s eyes. The Ether screamed from his head and together they fell to the ground. The Exo Guardian rose, staggering back. He couldn’t take his eyes off the Kell’s body. He’d never seen any Fallen withstand a skull puncture, but this was no ordinary Fallen. He waited...and waited. “Ghost?” The words barely audible. He heard her flash in, but had a hard time pinning her down. She was buzzing about, surveying the Fallen Kell. “He’s dead alright. So that’s it, we are done now?” He removed his helm, tossed it aside, and dropped to his knees. The Devils without a Kell. This war was over, at last. They could finally go home. “We are. Get me the Speaker.” “Opening his channel. Stand by.” “Is that you, my son?” The Speaker’s voice was filled more with anticipation of news than concern. “It is, father. The Devil Kell Solkis... is dead. This war is over.” “Such courage and power—the greatest ever to brace these worlds. You bring all of us peace, we will light the final flare, Devil Red. They will all know what you've done.”
Validus closed the book. "Patriot, if you're teaching me to be a Titan, why are we in the Warlock library?" He asked. "Just because we embrace the brute strength of war doesn't mean we cannot learn as well." Patriot answered. "Most Titans would never consider coming here, but if we truly want to understand both ourselves and our enemies, it is here that we could find the knowledge and insight to do it. Do you know the legend of Six Fronts?" "No." Validus answered. "It was one of the defining moments of the City. Fallen attacked from six different fronts in an attempt to destroy humanity. Four orders of Titans held those six lines, and not a single one broke. Being a Titan is not all about offense. It's about knowing when to defend too." / "Live for the Hunt." Cosmo's mentor instructed, "you do what you have do to kill and to survive." He pulled out his knife with a flourish. "You see this knife? The knife is your most important tool." He activated his Arc Blade and zipped around the area, unleashing Arc fury. "The knife is more than an extension of yourself. It is you and you are it. You become the blade, the swiftness, the speed. The brutality and the beauty." The Arc energy coursing through the Hunter's body petered out and Joden stood with his knife. "This tool is the single most important weapon a Hunter could ever wield. You must respect and honor it as if it was your own life." He sheathed the blade. "Now, little one, care to find out what else you can learn?" / "And that should do it." Patriot said as he hooked the last wire into place. With a snap of his finger, the mass of machinery and wire sparked to life, with electricity and Arc energy coursing through it. "Okay, I've jury rigged this old power grid to act as an electrified obstacle course." Patriot explained, "Your objective is to pass through without sustaining too much damage. To add realism, I've set up ten targets that you have to hit. And lastly, you have to get through in under two minutes." Validus' Ghost popped into existence and hovered over to Patriot. "Do you really think this is safe for a relatively new Guardian?" He asked. "Not at all." Patriot grinned. "Now get going!" Validus charged straight towards the maelstrom of energy, determination written all over his face. ZAP! Validus collapsed, his body becoming a charred husk. Patriot just shook his head. "Try again." / "Next scenario," Joden said as he sipped a drink in the Hunter Lounge. "A Warlock makes a rude comment about your cloak. What do you do?" Cosmo's mechanical eyes dimmed, indicating that he was in deep thought. "Hmm.. I guess I would ignore him. That's the best way to deal with people teasing you." "Have I taught you nothing?" Joden sighed. "No, what you're supposed to do is make a quip about their Warlock robes- remember to call it a dress. Here is a guide to these things, I always keep a spare copy on me." He handed a book to Cosmo, titled Aphorisms to Anger Warlocks: A Hunter Handbook. / "Okay, last question" Patriot began. "You are in a mission to lead a small village to the safety of The City. You are attacked by a Fallen raiding party. You have a choice between saving a captured villager, or taking out a Fallen Baron. What do you do?" "I save the villager." Validus answered. Patriot nodded in satisfaction. "Very good. A high value target is important, but not as much as the lives of any human being. You can always hunt down a target later; you cannot replace the life of a lost human. Alright, go and rest. I've pushed you enough these past couple of days." I want to give a special shout out to JeredB. The knife speech spoken by Joden was originally part of a comic by Jered called "The Knife Logic." It's pretty neat, so remember to check it out!
Click here for the next chapter
