In Forsaken, Will Power Level Actually Increase your Power vs Only Decreasing your weakness?

So far, Power level has only been a glorified progression gate, slowly allowing you to not be too weak in certain activities, but beyond that (from what I've learned) you gain no advantage when your power level is over the minimum requirement. Is that still going to be how power levels work in Forsaken? Edit: I don't think we should steam role night fall or raid bosses (although that would be fun near the end of a season), but being 10+ the minimum requirement should have noticeable impact without having to bust out a calculator and carefully measure each damage number to figure out the advantage. You don't want us to over power an activity too much? Set the requirement really high. Easy peasy.

  • So i'll explain this the best i can. After When you pass 541 you enter the ideal delta to do nightfall. You a slight advantage on ads and they have no advantage on you. at 546, 551, and 556 your advantage Jumps, but after 560, I believe it caps and you no longer deal more damage beyond this point. Same thing with raid. You see significant difference at 581, 586, 591, and 596, and this is the highest delta you can currently reach. Hypothetically you should not do more damage if you were to reach 601. Basically every 5 light there is a slight boost to both your damage output and resistance capping at (I believe) 20 light above a given activity

  • I will never understand why people just want to flat out murder everything as quickly as possible with no challenge. I cant think of anything more boring than lording it over the universe and turning up just to one shot everything in my path. No enemy in this game is particularly difficult to a high level toon, only the dumb prestige modifiers that limit activity by reducing your effectiveness make this game difficult, nothing else.

To market my guardian as a super powerfull "god killer" only to get my ass handed to me by a limp dick Psion or a frat boy with wrist grenades is kind of BS in my opinion.

      • The raids are more mechanics based, anyways... so being way overpowered for older raids should be allowed. Obviously, the new raids will still be challenging being at current power levels, so why not.

      • The same way how power level functions now. Its basically a height requirement for certain activities. Bungie will never make it in a way where a lvl 600 guardian can 1 shot a lvl 300 raid. Thats just not fun and avoids mechanics entirely.

            • I think in the open world, if you're say 100 power level above a small group of enemies, you should be able to stand there while they do little to no damage. But in an activity like a strike or raid, if you're so much higher than everything else and its mechanic based rather than power based, there should be no problem with being OP. Maybe scale the bosses? Gotta have some challenge but then again if destiny wants to play MMORPG then it needs to leave some things behind as we progress and there should be no justifiable reason for a lvl 1 dreg even being able to damage us at all let alone kill us if we're lvl 50 and 600 power.

            • PvE content is already to easy. If anything stuff should be much harder and not easier. Sure if you want to go into something well below your light I should be easy but destiny needs some kind of challenging PvE content badly.

            • I think having higher power should definitely give you an advantage, more fun that way. It'd be nice to go back and be able to steamroll old content with massive power advantages over the enemies, and if it means people can beat old raids far easier so what? It'll get more people raiding and experiencing the content.

              • I thought there was mention that damage scales to +20 Light above an activity? I assume defense will work much the same though, after you hit the threshold you simply stop being as weak.

                • To be honest I enjoyed going in to the lower level vog and kf in d1 with my friends and just melting everything as it was a laugh and made us actually feel like god killers. Many online games manage to have a level progression that lets you feel powerful by having certain areas with low level, your level and high level enemies and quests so you can go back through an area and fell like a god or at least see how far your character has come. Sadly destiny has no structure in its levels/power all it does is unlock events you can play.

                • EXACTLY my question. What’s the point of grinding to max light/power if it’s no different than being “1” power over the recommended level??

                  • Didn't Bungie mentioned that if you are over the minimum level you can gain a 1 power level improvement in damage and resistance. Did not exactly state what the 1 level meant percentage wise however. There example was you are 60 higher then the minimum of the raid and the rest of your fire team is below the minimum. You will be a able to help them because of that 1 power level advantage to help compensate for their lower level.

They should have the inverse of the power consequences for when you are above the required level. So in short the advantage caps out so the game doesn't get trivial. Other things like damage bonuses only apply to precision damage where applicable. Generally rewarding only accuracy and proficiency. It's an action shooter first and foremost after all. The key thing is to continue to make the game without thinking about it. The moment the game's difficulty and balance is adjusted to accommodate it the feature becomes nearly pointless. Oh and we do keep growing as players just not numerically because the game is an action shooter first. Meaning when new tools are added to our arsenal like bows, or subclasses we grow in that way.

                  • I’ve looked for the link but it’s years old now and hard to find. Bungie went over the power level thing way back before D1 even launched. The intent of capping power per activity was for grouping with friends. You can play together at an even level instead of one person completely outclassing and carrying the other.

                  • Bungie should change it so if I put in the hours to get to 600 yeah I should have an easier time and one shot things !! I work all my life save and scrimp buy a Ferrari and realise it’s the same as a £200 rusty banger ! No

                    • If you didn't have challenging enemies up to your level, it'd be boring one-shotting the shit out of everything. The problem is that the challenge should not come from only light level or enemy HP or whatever. If the enemy A.I and stage design were crafted to be more challenging, we could find us a happy middle ground. Even though I wasn't impressed doing Redux missions, stuff I'd already done, I actually wish that the first campaign play through was the way the Solstice Redux missions were. It wasn't just that enemies could take more licks. They actually designed the levels and enemy placement in a way that made things challenging. Lots of majors and ultras among the ranks of regular adds. Turrets in places that would kill you if not careful. Enemies in areas like the turbine or near other hazards. Dogs swarming you while snipers took pot shots. If they just had a bit better AI or enemy strategy, pair it with that level design and enemy placement, then give it Forsaken's upcoming weapon slot system, and make the damn supers and abilities actually wreck, the game might feel challenging while making you feel powerful. But you're never gonna do that with a number. The game mechanics are what need to change the most.

                      • It already does, and has. You deal progressively more damage to your opponents up to 20 power levels above them before plateuing.

Short answer is no. They now offer better rewards if you tackle content under-levelled but, that scenario stinks of BS. Case in point. If I'm Power 500 and I do a power 560 mission am I going to get Power 520 gear while at power 560 I get power 561 gear? I then equip my 520 gear and start to receive 525 gear because I'm now less "Under-powered". Thus the climb slows down to a crawl the nearer I am to the level of the content?!?! This seems to be what Bungie described (and in such a way that they made it sound like they were doing you a favour). What this means is that the grind to 600 is going to be excrutiating!
