It recently occurred to me that there might be a conflict over what people define as challenging. I thought that it might be interesting to discuss this.
It seems to me that a lot of people seem to equate difficulty, and occasionally complexity, with being more challenging. While more complex mechanics and stronger enemies is most definitely challenging, there is another version that players like myself would enjoy.
I guess you call it creatively challenging. By this, I mean that the emphasis is not so much about the mechanics or toughness of enemies, but on rewarding players for creatively resolving conflicts or even discovering alternative pathways through the raid. Every run could be a completely new experience and no one gear meta would rule.
I'm interested in hearing your thoughts. Personally, I will never really a sense of accomplishment from the current raids because it is mostly built on difficulty and complexity. Double the size of a rubix cube and it is still a rubix cube. Same rules, more steps. But give me a raid where I can be rewarded for being unique and creative and I might just try to hit it on day one.
