For me, personally, I don't fear death. I know people that are religious and they are convinced that if they don't act a certain way they will be tortured for all eternity. As an atheist, I try my hardest to help them not fear death because I used to fear hell myself. I tell them how often do you worry about the other versions of hell in other religions? It took me a good three months to finally let go of my religious childhood indoctrination. And it is possible to do so.
But hell is not the only reason. Some people don't like the idea of never existing again. For those people, I try to explain to them how they felt not existing for 13.8 billion years before their birth? Not existing isn't an experience, you won't even know you're dead.
Lastly, there is the fear of never seeing your friends or family again. And I can relate to this one a lot. I don't want this to be true, but if I'm thinking logically it makes perfect sense. I try to explain to them that you won't be sad because you won't exist. And hey, for some reason if there's an afterlife anyway then it's a bonus. Just don't live your life in fear and cherish the time you do have.
I hope this helps people that fear death. If I can get over it so can you.
I try to explain to them that you won't be sad because you won't exist.
That's pretty much how I approach it. When I was younger It used to scare the living s--t out of me. Something about not existing anymore put me in this weird head-space where I would imagine every little detail about what would happen after I was gone. Now I simply don't care. Whatever happens happens. Not really a lot you can do about it so why worry. It sucks when it happens but it's going to happen to everyone. Just enjoy your life while it lasts.

This is deep as shit. Never thought I'd get woke on a FPS off-topic forum. Thank you

Instinct plays a part too. Not wanting to loose what you spent your entire life doing also can be a motivator

I’m very religious, but that doesn’t make me fear death. I believe my religion can bring the best out of me and can bring me to eternal happiness. And if it doesn’t, I won’t care because I’m dead.

They say people fear what they can’t understand. I’m the opposite. I don’t fear death because I don’t understand it. I find it pointless to let my imagination rule over how I view the phenomenon. If I absolutely knew what happened after death, I’d probably be more afraid to die.

Edited by Unicorn: 11/22/2018 11:23:41 AMSome might say that the being dead thing is a bit nihilistic, but it makes you value your own life and time in a way more than you otherwise would have.
Didn't read all of the original post, so I said somethings that had already been said. That is all I had to add.
I personally try to look away from death and pain as it will only worry me more than I should.

Why should I fear death? If I am, then death is not. If death is, I am not. Why should I fear that which cannot exist when I do? Epicurus 341-271 BC

I don't wanna die lol. But as an atheist I do wonder if people truly believe what they claim about heaven. If I truly 100% believed that after death it was paradise with all my loved ones everything's perfect, then surely that would be something to look forward to.. I get that not seeing a person again until you die yourself is depressing and sad but if you believed they where in paradise looking down on you then that would take most the pain from it. If you believe in heaven but also fear death, imagine how atheists feel 😂

I'm afraid of not knowing what will happen. Also, science has recently shown that the brain still works shortly after you die and you can hear people announcing your death if they're there when you die.

Fear of the unknown.

When I was younger I lost too much blood and my heart stopped. I was clinically dead for a minute and 13 seconds. I don't think it really counts because my brain was still active and shutting down due to lack of blood flow and stuffs but it wasn't so bad. Just nothing. No thoughts or feelings, just an endless peaceful void. Not really in a hurry to get back there anytime soon though...

You're now dying slowly. :^)

According to most religious doctrines, death is nothing to fear if you have lived right.
-
Because they are not content enough with their pitiful lives
-
I don’t fear death I fear a painful death and I don’t know what comes after, part of that scares me
-
I fear death for only one reason. My daughter is too young to remember me if I pass away.
-
I don't know, I can't relate to a fear of dying, mainly because if I die I either deserved it as I was too weak/stupid or because it was my time.
-
I am religious, but I don't see a reason to fear death. You have to be like the worst of the worst of the worst to go to hell. I'm talking Adolf Hitler and KKK levels of horrible. But even then, my faith calls for me not to do that, so I can't even say for sure if -godwinslaw!- are in hell. Maybe its just purgatory, but for longer. I just assume that we all go to heaven, and it is just a longer waiting time if you are a prick, I guess. And don't let anyone say that if you are an atheist, you are going to hell, because there is only 1 being that decides that, not them.

It's the same reason that people fear the dark or the monster under the bed.
Fear of the unknown.
-
<An extension of the fear of the unknown. Nobody will know how their death will affect the universe they leave behind and there's the fear of an afterlife. What if heaven and hell do exist and you chose wrong? What if it's just a perpetual purgatory? What if it's just a void of nothing? What if you become a spectator, an immortal watcher that gets to see all the people you knew die? Nobody truly knows.>

I simply can't accept the notion of atheism, because the universe, with its clockwork precision, and life, with its incredible complexity, did not create themselves. It's like believing that you can take some lumber, scrap metal, and glass... shake it for a few hundred millennia and BAM! You have a grandfather clock. Doesn't happen. Order deteriorates into chaos, not the other way around, and while certainly evolution sustains and upgrades life, it can't create it. Survival of the fittest only functions when life actually exists. Be that as it may, fear of death is not merely for those who belong to a religious faith that features hell. Many other reasons exist: it's different. It's unknown. It might be painful. We lose everyone we love. All the joys and pleasures of life come to an end. And finally, I'm assuming you believe in evolution, since you openly reject the alternative. Well, we fear death because billions of years of evolution have programmed us to do so.
-
I don't fear death I fear losing my love ones. My grandfather passed away from lung cancer a year and a half ago and I'm still -blam!-ed up from that.

Congratulations on getting away from the indoctrination as a child. As a bunch of cells that want to survive like any living organism, our genetic make up doesn't 'want' to die, but wanting isn't really an appropriate emotion on an anatomical basis, we exist because we can, the conditions are right for existence. It is only the human mind that even addresses this concept of death, but of course it is observable in all life, we have just given a name to it and acknowledge it. It is almost arrogance that we don't want to die, we are deluded in believing we are more important than anything else.
