What's you opinion of Overwatch?

Curious to see what the destiny/bungie community thinks about this game. I got it used recently and I'm not too crazy about it. It just seems like the gameplay is too casual, definitely not a high intensity game. I haven't really played it enough to say anymore than that. what's your thoughts on Overwatch?

Oh Overwatch. A game that encapsulated my attention when it was first released. I played it a bit on the PS4 around launch when my brother got it, and then bought it on Xbox that same year for my birthday. I really enjoyed it back then. I played it...not as religiously as games like destiny, Skyrim or Diablo (those were games that held my attention through gameplay and story), but it definitely climbed the ranks of games I’d frequent. The lore was mysterious and incomplete. The gameplay was fresh and new and something I wasn’t use to at the time. The characters had life to them. But as time went on, and I started to fall out of it, playing more R6 and destiny 2, the Overwatch scene started to really tumble in my eyes. The gameplay became repetitive, and heroes didn’t seem to be to interesting. The last one I was actually interested in was Moira. A villainous character responsible for who Reaper is today. And as a support main this character really peaked my interest. In my experience, I enjoyed playing her (and other supports). However The newer characters; Brigitte, Hammond, Ashe, Baptiste, they haven’t been able to convey that same level of character as the others had. And the lore....*sigh*....I will be the first to say making soldier:76 a gay character was a bad idea. It felt out of place. Like a cover up for the horrible reception to Diablo eternal. It also comes across as unnecessary for his character. But even without that, the lore hasn’t managed to bring me back in. That’s one thing I love about destiny, it brings me in with its lore. Bungie have got the lore down to a T. It’s complex. It’s strange and weird and the way it’s told allows for stories to be revealed much better compared to Overwatch. Now I realise that could be down to how the company manages based on the differences in game type and genre. Overwatch is an FPS, arena/hero shooter, whereas destiny is an “open world”, “RPG”, FPS. It has story as one of its central points compared to Overwatch which is gameplay based. The story in OW revolves around the gameplay. In destiny they are somewhat separated. I don’t really play comp in either. And my opinions on events in Overwatch is positive for PvE and negative for PvP. Which is weird to say about a PvP game. I jump back in every so often to play events and try out a new character but other than that I have to really want to play it in order to actually play it.

  • It was really fun for me at one point, but after playing the same exact thing over and over for so long, it started to get boring

  • I liked it, but I hated how the characters (except soldier) felt so slow compared to in other games. I completely understand why people like it but I'm not really a fan.

  • It's... Weird... I'm more of a TF2 guy to begin with, but I just don't like the super static Rock Paper Scissors gameplay that it offers... Plus, the balancing patches have been -blam!-ing awful for the most part.

  • I don't use this word lightly, but Overwatch is and was overrated. And I don't think it would have the popularity it's had if it was created by anyone other than Blizzard. I remember shortly after Overwatch released someone here made a post on why it was unfair to call the game overrated. Following is, roughly, the same response I gave back then, which did actually change their mind: You have to remember that Overwatch came out around the same time console games started getting more microtransactions. My first point is and was, while other games were being slated for their lootboxes, Overwatch got a free pass. While other games got slated for having no pve, no story mode, no singleplayer, Overwatch got a free pass. While other games got slated for oversexualisation of female characters, Overwatch got a free pass. And I still believe this lack of criticism is almost entirely because the game was made by Blizzard (just remember that this was before "don't you have phones?") Also, I can't remember which other games released in 2016, but I do remember being very angry that Overwatch won at the game awards over Dark Souls 3.

    • I had high hopes for it when it was first announced. But after maybe 3 years it has become stale. Not to mention I all but distrust any big budget corporation like EA and Activision-Blizzard Fun fact that isn't so fun: Did you know Activision wants to know immediately if you or your significant other get pregnant? Just for the purpose of more bucks in their wallets?

        • I like it. Compared to destiny comp, overwatch comp is so much easier. I get it's because everyone has all the same things, and destiny there is so much diversity, but it's ridiculously fun. I enjoy listening to people rant about me and ask me how I got so good at such a low level and I just say one word
destiny
• I watched my son play it to see if it would be something I'd like to get into. I will never be playing that game. It's kind of like Destiny PvP. Overpowered everything against overpowered everything. No thanks.

            • I felt the same at first but it’s my main PVP game now. Competitive gaming done right. Pacing was an issue at first; I was so used to Destiny 1 until they screwed it up so I moved on. Destiny 2 PVP is a joke. It has many intense moments/rushes. I would recommend arcade mystery heroes to get started. You unlock cases and learn the characters easily. I would like to see another unreal type tournament done right on console for the faster gameplay but I’m sticking with Overwatch(they constantly add new maps and content for free that I would pay for) I’ve given up on bungie pretty much.

            • Used to be a lot of fun. Still is in small doses (couple games every month or two) but it really does not have a lot of variety.

            • After a while it just gets stale. Even though it could mess with the balance, having D1 style skill trees or MKX style variations could spice up gameplay a lot. Imagine options for a damage boosting Trancendance for Zenyatta, or a self-rez ultimate for Reaper. Anything to add variance. It also has Vanilla D1 syndrome where a majority of the story/lore is found outside of the game itself. Whether it be a campaign or even simple one-off missions any single player options would be great. Also wish they could keep the PvE stuff like Junkenstein’s or Uprising. Zero reason to take that stuff away. The way you progress in the game is also terrible & even predatory. Nothing feels quite as accomplishing as lucking out & getting a random skin from a loot box, knowing that someone could have gotten that same item instantly or payed up for it. The seasonal loot boxes are even more greedy & cynical. Instead lock them behind challenges. For example, 1,000 kills as Tracer to get a legendary skin. For the seasonal items, lock them behind event specific goals. While Overwatch was fine at first, it just simply hasn’t evolved or made any meaningful changes & has instead doubled down on it’s worst aspects. How this game got GOTY awards is beyond me.

            • I liked it, and played it for a year or so pretty often. But, after questionable changes to characters, and the new ones just kind of being boring or annoying to me, I quit. Can't say I wish to go back, even now. I've got my single player games to play! And the 4 multiplayer games I play with friends lol.

Okay, so, I'm back from Wikipedia, and found the following. Overwatch released in 2016, and won game of the year over the likes of: (Please note: This list is in order of release date, and not quality. Don't be offended if your game of the year is lower down.) Oxenfree Darkest Dungeon Oddworld New N Tasty Resident Evil Zero Remaster World of Tanks Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam Lego Marvel's Avengers The Witness Dragon Quest Builders Rise of the Tomb Raider This War of Mine: The Little Ones XCOM 2 Dying Light: The Following Unravel Valkyria Chronicles Remaster Layers of Fear Street Fighter V Rocket League I am Setsuna Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 Stardew Valley Gears of War Ultimate Edition Heavy Rain Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess HD Enter the Gungeon Dark Souls 3 Ratchet and Clank Axiom Verge DC Universe Online Doom Kirby Planet Robobot Dead by Daylight Pokémon Go Inside Batman Telltale Series Phoenix Wright Spirit of Justice Bioshock Collection ReCore Dragon Quest VII 3DS Paper Mario Colour Splash Gears of War 4 Batman Return to Arkham Skyrim Special Edition Dishonoured 2 Pokémon Sun and Moon Super Mario Maker 3DS Super Mario Run It's worth noting that I haven't even played a quarter of those releases. But I do know they're very popular, highly rated, and at the very least equal in quality to Overwatch. Edit: Damn, I didn't realise I allowed that list to get so long lmao.
