Destiny 2 should be a case study for how gamer entitlement and expectations of instant gratification have grown as gaming has become mainstream.

  • more like how moral and ethical and quality standards have declined in the gaming industry over time to the rock bottom of battlefront2 and games of its kind

  • Console gaming has been around and big business for a while now ;) D2 could likewise be quite an interesting case study in poor customer communications, ineffective feedback loops, design intention vs. user perception, design philosophies vs user expectations, and the pitfalls of lack of formalized user satisfaction KPIs. Or what happens to player bases and sales when you completely deviate from successful game mechanics (D1) for no good reason whatsoever, instead of carefully tweaking and iterating. And, most importantly, what happens when a gaming company forgets the primary purpose of their product: that it should, above all else, remain a fun and satisfying experience for users. And never feel like a frustrating and tedious chore due to haughty design decisions, overly complex mechanics, economics or time commitments. There is a market for such games. It is not the AAA title console market they marketed this game to. Do try to remember that, behind these friendly "guardians," "players," and "community members" labels we are still talking about inputs from paying customers.

  • Not a fair comparison since infusion existed prior to cores. It’s a change Bungie made.

  • To be fair, it's not really entitlement. Infusing costs waaaaaaay more than it did in D1 and the lack of efficient ways to farm cores doesn't help. While I don't think cores should be removed or that we should be handed stuff - believe me, I hate when shit like ace of spades is dumbed down - the cost for infusion is very high.

Fair enough. Couple opinions: 1. Bungie should do a better job of clearly explaining, in-game, the effect light level has on weapon damage and player damage taken. The average player is blowing through their cores because they rightfully have the impression that light level is so significant that it's virtually required to be as high as possible just to play through content. Of course, this isn't true, but why wouldn't players think that's the case? On its surface, Destiny appears to be a strongly level-based game, and that's how such games operate. If the game explained light level clearly, with actual numbers, that would instantly alleviate most if not all of the frustration over enhancement cores. You don't need to be fervently upgrading everything you find, you can figure out your favorite load-outs and then do a little grinding to max it all out - which brings me to point 2. 2. Players need to be OK with having to do some grinding for end-game min/maxing. If you want to max out a few sets of your favorite gear, then we're talking about literal end-game stuff here. You don't need to masterwork gear to play any of Destiny's content. You don't even need max light level to do that. But, if you want the marginal stat gains from maxing out gear, well, that takes a little time. And that's not just OK, that's quite literally an industry standard for games like Destiny. This is why it's so absurd to me that so many kids are screaming to remove any and all grinds like enhancement cores - you're in the wrong genre, kiddo. Go play any of dozens of other titles where you can put in very little time and have a fully customized loadout ready every time you load the game. Let the rest of us enjoy having something to grind for and feel rewarded for earning over time and effort. And, yes, to millions of players, grinding is rewarding.

  • D1's infusion made more sense. You could cross infuse guardian class armor (eliminated in D2 to force you to play longer to level up) and you could infuse like classes of weapons into each other (i.e. HMG into HMG, scout into scout, etc). D2 lets you infuse any kinetic into kinetic, energy into energy, heavy into heavy. That seems a bit better, but I would go back to the D1 infusion scheme in a heartbeat as long as we didn't have to use cores!

  • Actually just the opposite. This is on Bungie. Destiny 2 is one of the biggest brand-management -blam!--ups by a major business since "New Coke" in 1985. When Coca-cola decided to completely change the formula for Coke in an effort to try to become "more competitive" with Pepsi. People HATED the new formula. I said in a post yesterday, that this game will likely be taught in business school as a case study in what NOT to do with your brand. Instead of continuing on with a successful branding of the game, and incorporating successful features of the first game into the sequel, like Massive did with The Division 2.... ....Bungie when 180* in the opposite direction, and basically tried to reinvent the entire franchise....while still trying to leverage the loyalty to the brand. IOW. Bungie tried to sell a campaign shooter to a customer base that had every reason to expect a loot-based RPG.... ....and it blew up in their faces. So badly, that Bungie had to basically redesign the entire game last year in order to save the franchise. Even still this game is still being hobbled by the bad decisions that when into its design. Go look at The Division 2. Look at how that game was an evolution of the successes of The Division 1...and how Massive used what they learned to build upon that first game. THAT is what Bungie should have done with this game. But they didn't....and they are **rightfully** paying the price for failing to do so.

  • I hate when people praise destiny 1 when talking about destiny 2. It’s a perfect example of you don’t know what you have until it’s gone, because everybody complained about destiny 1.

  • Don't feed the troll. He'll just post walls of text full of his conjecture and opinions stated as fact, with the periodic ACCENTUATION... and dramatic pauses... just to make sure you know he's really EMPHATIC and KNOWLEDGEABLE because he posts hundreds of words with CONVICTION... something you'd understand if you were an EXPERT like he is.

  • No game is perfect. But by Year 3, Destiny 1 was a pretty good game....and it took 2 years of complaining and feedback to get it there. The Division 2 is a very good game...and it took 2.5 years of complaining and feedback about The Division 1 to get it there. The difference is that Massive took the time to learn the rules of good RPG game design....and Bungie didn't. Massive had a clear vision of the kind of game they wanted to make....and Bungie doesn't. Massive was willing to learn from its community and held itself accountable to CHANGE based on what they learned.....Bungie doesn't. Which is why Massive is already working to fix one of my BIGGEST irriations with the game.....I call it "The Magic Run". The tendency for enemies to relentlessly swarm at you. To the point of them just running straight at you and face-tanking your damage....and then getting behind you and killing you a few bullets. It can take playing their end-game level content to the point of controller-breaking frustration. They've already said this is a bug their working to fix....and they are open to toning this swarming tendency down because they're aware that its more frustrating than fun. While on the Bungie Ranch....we've been telling them that the core economy is more frustrating than fun....and Bungie basically just keeps telling us to shut up and deal with it.

You forget that division 2 also changed things not many people asked for. Skill builds not being nearly as useful, gear sets being nerfed so hard from division 1 that normal high ends are better, not to mention delaying updates to fix bugs that should have been fixed before release. Like do you realize how broken scaling is? Enemies only push when you have low health, and their health is so insanely high when you’re in a group that they always consider you to be really low health and rush you! Not to mention that certain headphones and programs just stopped audio from working, and the very consistent crashes, and enemies t-posing when they die, and specialist ammo drop rate being -blam!-ed after an update... But as for destiny 1, you can’t even almost blame bungie for trying something different considering how poor destiny 1 was and how many complaints it got even in year three.
