Destiny 2 Year 2 matchmaking: How it works and the case for why skill needs to be factored.

As we near the release of Shadowkeep, we're seeing another push to keep skill from being factored in matchmaking this fall. I hope people are willing to take time to watch this and understand how the game's matchmaking actually works and why sbmm is a good thing for the overall health of the game. Thank you.

  • I'm going to just look at it like this and leave it there: Since bungie are the ones who know how the matchmaking system works...dont you think if it was truly better that they would implement It? It was there in year 1 and everything felt ok in terms of connection, but something that absolutely HAS TO be taken into consideration is the larger number of players. If for whatever reason sbmm took skill into account over connection, because of the larger number, wouldn't lag also be there more consistently? I'm going to use this as an example: I used to have pretty crap internet back during d1. Skill based matchmaking and connection based match making floated around during the years. During skill based, whether it's coincidence or not, I noticed SIGNIFICANTLY higher lag than the months before when it wasn't active. There was no logical explanation I could think of to explain this so I blamed it on the matchmaking system. My internet didn't change and it still sucked, but as taken king dropped...it got laggy. I even started having issues talking in a party when I did 6v6 game modes on Xbox. I never had these issues before. Now, obviously something else could have been factored in and I'm not saying you are wrong. But from my perspective...something was indeed wrong. Fast forward to Destiny 2 and I had my crap internet still during the beta. Same exact issues went on, but I cut it some slack because it was a beta. The game releases some time later and by then I have upgraded internet. There were some laggy games but not so many that it bothered me. That's pretty much normal Destiny though. Then they change quickplay back to cbmm later on. Most of my matches stopped being laggy. Even now when iron banner is active, I do actually notice more lag vs quickplay. Could it be that people of my skill level just have meh internet or something else is getting in the way. Regardless I still feel that cbmm has done nothing wrong for me, even if from time to time I get pub stomped. But as an above average player, it makes sense that I'm not suffering as much as others because even in stomp matches I can still salvage myself. I think they should implement what halo 5 did where matchmaking styles were choosable. Like how you can look for skill, connection, or a balance of both. Otherwise the community will just stay divided on what should be done and continue to show hostility towards one another. Even your post makes you seem a bit more hostile than usual based on the comments. I know a lot of people are acting like asses, but even then the topic is creating issues.
