You really think difficulty is a problem? I matchmade to Reckoning only when play my hunter in the end of Drifter season. And three times of five I started alone or with one random. Same for Forges and I can't even remember how many times I found myself alone in Blind Well.
The problem of Bungie MM is this thing is broken and noone wanna fix this.
And yes, I agree Raids are something you can't MM cause of it's mechanics. But Nightfall, Heroic Managerie etc. are absolutly fine with randoms. But for some reason there are no MM to this activity. Same as for Whisper, Zero Hour etc. I mean, you could beat ZH alone. So no matter what randoms you will get, you will be fine.

I agree that optional matchmaking should be a thing for all activities except the Raid. But Reckoning is an example on challenging content got nerfed because of matchmaking.

Well, I think Reckoning nerfed, cause this was bad content on the first place. Stopm + timer on bridge wasn't challenging, mostly stupid. And of course knight in the end. One hit killed you no matter your power level or gear. This isn't challenging too. I mean (again MHW, but because it's game I played right now) bosses in Monster Hunter can one hit kill you. But if you keep on going, new patterns of attack and upgrade your gear, things getting better. In Reckoning you faced one hundred random triggers that caused fail. And no tools for you to somehow avoid this triggers. So Reckoningis the worst thing in Annual pass, so I guess it's a bad example here. I still think Forges are the best horde mode in Destiny Annual pass. It was hadr on the start and after a months of progress and learning you can solo it with right gear and tactic. And this don't need a nerf except the first one, but that was a community misunderstanding if you ask me.
