they didnt lie, do you even know what youre saying? every time a piece of armor drops, it rolls with different stats and element. obviously you decide hey what sort of build do i want? do i want to run pulse rifles with constant grenades.... then you aim for armor with high disciple and tailor the mods around grenades and pulse rifle. The new gear is so easy to farm, every time you kill a boss on the moon, you have a chance to get a quest that gives you a gaurenteed armor/weapon drop. you can literally buy the quests by farming for the currency. so you can spam the same weapon or armor piece quest multiple times until you get the perfect stats. (obviously if you dont care about looks or if you like the moon set). you can do the same with the vex offensive that just came out. you can literally farm any content you one until you get the perfect piece of gear. you no longer have to aim for raid gear, you can go hey i like the EDZ warlock set, im going to just farm edz bounties, public events, lost sectors etc until i get the gear to drop with the stats i favour for my build. since the stat rolls are random, you get it eventually. then you can just breakdown other gear to upgrade its light level. the only downside to this system, is gear that you cant farm naturally in game... i.e faction wars gear, (Iron banner will be a -blam!- to farm if you like a specific set). Destiny 2 has one of the best loot/power system compared to other mmos. although WoW has a great transmog system, this new armor 2.0 offers more control and customisation then any other mmo's transmog/loot system ive seen to date. sure its not perfect, but whats the point to a game if it doesnt force you to grind and put the extra effort in to get exactly what you want?
