#FridayGameChat: The ‘Minecraft Killer’

Hello there! So, almost a year ago, a trailer for a little game called Hytale released. I’m sure you’ve heard of it, probably in a YouTube video titled “THE MINECRAFT KILLER????” Or something like that. I’ll get to that later. For those of you who don’t know, it’s a game being developed by some of the people behind Minecraft’s most popular server, Hypixel (get it, Hytale, Hypixel?). I say some of the people, because they made a new company (Hypixel studios I believe) to make the game, while keeping support for Hypixel up. So what is Hytale? Essentially, it’s a sandbox survival game like Minecraft, but unique in its own way. It will have a functioning combat system, a world with multiple zones (biomes) to explore and a story to experience. That’s the gist of it, although Not too much is known about the story. The game is set to release around the year 2021. (You can find out all the details at Hytale.com.) Anyway, what I want to talk to you guys about is how this game is both entirely different to Minecraft, and how I know it will succeed. First, this game is not Minecraft, not a Minecraft killer. Minecraft is already engrained into gaming’s hall of fame, and is the most sold game of all time. Hytale will not kill Minecraft, period. It’s not just because Minecraft is hard to kill, it’s because this game is different too. Minecraft is more centered around building, creation, and multiplayer, while Hytale has a larger focus on combat, exploration, and mini games. Hytale doesn’t allow Skin Editing like Minecraft does (although it does have a character editor that puts Bedrock’s version to SHAME), but what it does have is the ability to give Modders, content creators and the like the tools that the creators themselves used on the game itself, thus allowing modding and creating content to be much MUCH easier. Hytale is a game about exploration and combat, and as such it has an epic soundtrack to go along with it (still waiting for them boss themes. Where they at?). It even has an RPG-like weapon’s system, with rarities, stats, and more. There even is a bunch of rideable animals in the game! One of the things I thought about while watching the trailer the 100th time is why was this game taking so long to release, and why didn’t it even have a release date (it didn’t back then)? The answer: The Hytale team didn’t want the same thing that happened to games such as No Man’s Sky to happen to them. As a wise man once said: “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.” The Hytale team has said this multiple times in their blogs and news articles on their website. They want to take their time, and get it right before releasing the game to the public. And that is why this game WILL succeed. The developers aren’t concerned about money (in fact they actually have an investor that some of you should know.), they just want this game to be the best it can possibly be, which is rare among developers these days. So yeah, that’s Hytale for ya. I wanted to talk about this last week but the servers went down.

  • It’s not visually appealing whatsoever. I look at it and think it’s a tech demo for PS1. That’s not to say it might not be good though, graphics aren’t everything.
