"FOMO" only works on the financially irresponsible

FOMO: The Fear of Missing Out An eight year old could tell you the definition of this philosophy with his first guess- but somehow, young adults and teens have found a way to re-appropriate the meaning of this philosophy into a weapon they can use against anything that is advertised. FOMO is a problem with the person, not with the corporation. Nobody held you at gun-point when you purchased Shadowkeep or the Annual Pass. Don't blame unobtrusive and optional content for your gambling addiction. Next time you visit your local McDonalds and buy the entire menu because you were afraid of missing out on any of the delicious food they offer- storm the place while crying and screaming "et per patriarchus" demanding a refund for abusing your poor psyche. EDIT: ">;( *clicks downvote*" EDIT: PsYcHoLoGiCaL MaNiPuLaTiON If Bungie is psychologically manipulating you, every corporation in the world that's ever released an advertisement is psychologically manipulating you. Just don't buy it. Your wallet is a much more useful speaking tool than your useless mouth, I promise. It's like saying "GOD THIS FOOD SUCKS" while cramming your face with the food in question. A vocal sheep is still a sheep. You've never been forced into buying anything. EDIT: Royboi's Pyramid of Typical Responses to True Statements I'm going to insult you until you stop responding!
"You just don't get it. You never will considering how dumb you are. Don't breed."
I'm going to play the victim!
weaponize FOMO
Now, this guy was just speaking straight out of his shit-hole.
I hate close-minded arguments that lack perspective.
Perspective? Close-minded? You responding with NO argument to the ONLY person defending this side is close-minded. Ironic and moronic. I'm going to paint them as the bad person!
It's much easier to mute morons with no empathy.
No empathy. Wow. I shouldn't even have to explain what is wrong with that statement. You people think I'm the majority here? Bunch of idiots. Crowds love to blame anyone but themselves. Keep being idiots. Keep blaming others for your weakness. I'm sure it'll workout in the long-term.

  • True, bungie can make fomos, but only the people buying can fall for it aka stupidity buy because of their fomos. And considering bungie hasn't changed... It's working.

  • Typical thoughts of a casual. Those whales need an ocean. You? You're the ocean, idiot. He exists because YOU do. The game was DESIGNED to target the addiction center of the brain and somehow were blaming the people who have a legitimate mental problem? You're the -blam!-ing adult in your hypothetical, why don't you do something productive? Like boycotting this game until eververse is removed. You get a better game, you free how many whales from buying more crap. Win win. The only hard part is that you need testicles to do it. Not a lot of those around here.

    • The OP is true.......Its called personal responsibility. If you made a bad finical decision learn from it and don't do it again. Yes, I know its easier to blame some "evil corporation" and feel good about yourself but at the end of the day its your fault for buying into FOMO and you're money isn't coming back.

    • “Alcoholism only works on the weak minded” “Obesity only works on the lazy” People have legit money management issues, and people can easily become addicted to video games. People DIED playing WoW. They killed their children due to neglect. Did you know that from the beginning Destiny was built using behavioral game design? They did tons of research to figure out how to psychologically “hook” players. They use the same thought process when it comes to monetization, and it clearly works. FOMO is a very real tool that companies use to prey on people susceptible to addiction, or poor money management. So, maybe don’t be an ass just because something doesn’t affect you. Drug addiction is real even though I don’t suffer from it... and THIS ought to be what even an 8-year-old should know.

EDIT: ">;( *clicks downvote*"
Okay, I’ll bite. I’m not asking for a refund. I’m asking for no FOMO. Bungie has literally ADMITTED to using this tactic, even praised themselves for it, saying that it would be better for the game, and by game, I mean wallet. Sure, it depends on those who are weak willed, but on that same token, this system is DESIGNED to prey upon those types of people, and designed to CREATE those types of people. Yes, they use psychologists to create the most addictive system possible. Not to mention, kids brains are like a ball of clay. Easy to mold, easy to manipulate, it’s why kids aren’t allowed to gamble, do drugs, drink, all manner of addictive things. Why? Because it’ll stick, and be hard, or nearly impossible to fix. Which is why FOMO is a bad thing, especially for kids. These malleable kids minds are being trained by FOMO. So it’s not a problem with the person, it’s the corporation, because their system preys on kids. For adults? We have the rational thinking thing down. Kids don’t. Teenagers don’t. It’s like when tobacco companies played on the social part of smoking for their advertisement, the candy cigarettes. People think THATS bad, this is no different. Should ADULTS be more responsible? Yes. We can’t expect kids to be about something like this, especially with a system DESIGNED to be as addictive as possible. The game is rated T for Teen. If it was M, I would absolutely agree with you. Because then, it’s on the PARENTS of the kids who are letting them play the game. And when I say kids, I mean teenagers mostly. But little kids too, but at that point I feel it’s on the parents.

          • For many, fomo has nothing to do with money. Its about time and feeling rushed to get in or be left behind and miss out on a game changing reward.

                • Yeah, it is, but it doesn't change the fact that their FOMO driven model is scummy and bad for the game as a whole.

Sounds like you're the one with the abused psyche if you think corporations are 100% innocent when they weaponize FOMO and remove content from a product we paid for.

It's a multi level problem. It's unhappy people spending money to feel better, it's people giving in to social pressure to "keep up with the Joneses", it's people just wanting a different look (even though that SHOULD NEVER be locked behind a paywall) and it's companies taking advantage of those people. Both gamers and developers/publishers are to blame, but the majority falls on the gamers. It's 100% true that if no one bought into it, companies wouldn't keep trying to sell it. Whatever "it" may be.

                        • FOMO is just an excuse for those who want to blame others for the decisions they’ve made themselves. “My life sucks and it’s YOUR fault!!”

i grew up on FOMO. if you weren't in front of your tv when your show was coming on, you didn't get to see it. no recording. no pausing. no rewinding because you missed something. it's pretty cool that Bungie is putting out content like tv did 40 years ago.

                          • I guess I have JOMO (Joy Of Missing Out) because I just don't give a RA. I have played this game since D1 and I can't remember one time I actually looked at another character or the gun they had because they were different colors. You can't even see yourself in this game.

                                • I just turned 61, have been retired for the last 6 years, and have a nice monthly retirement salary and a swollen IRA (thanks POTUS). I originally only played Shadowkeep 4-5 hours for a few days after launch. I got to around level 26 or so prior to this past weekend, and yesterday. I really wanted to complete the levels for the exotic gear but obviously didn't have time. So, I did what you all are going to hate, I paid over $80 to buy enough silver to purchase the remaining levels, and, I managed to finish the campaign as of 0100 this morning. I have to say it was one of the best campaign set of missions I've played in the Destiny universe. Bungie deserves a lot of credit for that. I was originally pissed off that they were rehashing the moon and the vex, but there's enough different atmosphere for me to have been very happy playing it. This is just to show it's not kids or those that can't afford it that are affected by FOMO. It's kind of why we have game manufacturers who know how to "work" the players. I gladly handed over my cash and I got a lot of in-game "stuff" to play with. Nothing wrong with that.
