Should we really be arming Rasputin? (Possible Trap)

Let’s discuss whether we should be bringing Rasputin to full power, especially since we were teased with Osiris questioning Rasputin. We don’t know when that cutscene takes place, whether it was during Season of the Dawn or after Season of the Worthy when it’s too late. Osiris is clearly spooked and here we are bringing Rasputin back to full power with these bunker upgrades. I feel like it’s another situation where we’re being tricked just like we were in the Dreaming City. And before anyone states we need his help to stop the Almighty, how do we know he didn’t plan it this way and manipulate the Cabal into sending it to Earth so we’d HAVE to power him up to repel it. He’s a super powerful Golden Age A.I. that has the potential to run rampant like in the Halo universe I just feel like we’re being set up for a betrayal and that we should let Rasputin be. Our hubris will be our downfall

  • No choice. Just as dead if you choose the wrong ally, as you are in dying because you refuses to admit you need help. The City has no fleet and no orbital defenses. The Red Legion keep exploiting that weakness.

    • No. We shouldn’t be arming the AI that shot down the Traveler just to keep it here, leading to our first Collapse. He will be one of the many catalysts of the second Collapse.

Well Osiris has been wrong. More then once. His arrogance in thinking he knows best isn’t something I fully trust. Even if Rasputin tricked them (and waving your hands to make it magically so it’s a poor argument), what is the alternative now? None. Powering him up might bite back but if we don’t then we are dead. So clearly leaving him alone isn’t going to help us at all. Second...you do know Rasputin is the only one with first hand knowledge of the Darkness and Collapse? What exactly went down. Our reluctance to power him up would drive him to do something to push us to help him. If we can’t beat Worm Gods on our own, we need him. For him to help us, he needs more power. So tricking us actually can be for our own good.

        • For those saying Rasputin is protecting humanity and will protect humanity at all cost, Rasputin hasn't done any of that since the Golden Age, in fact he abandoned humanity to save his own ass while the Traveler sacrificed itself to save ours.

He speaks backwards Russian, how’s he gonna manipulate the Cabal? Anyway, even if he did, it ain’t exactly like we got other options. If we don’t arm him, the City dies. If we do arm him, the City lives, and if he decides to kill everyone off, at least we survived a little bit longer than if we let the Almighty crash.

          • Rasputin doesn't view Guardians as human which is partially why the Vanguard is wary of him. It is extremely unlikely that he'd turn on the Last City or anything, but he doesn't seem afraid at dealing with us if the opportunity arises. As for the Cabal, it was clearly stated that the Red Legion is chucking the Almighty at us as a last ditch effort to stop us; Rasputin had nothing to do with it and even if he did, how would he communicate with them? I heavily doubt there is any betrayal with Rasputin here, though the concern of arming him is certainly justified. The way I see it, a fully powered Rasputin gives humanity a boosted chance of survival in the long run, but I do not see him trusting Guardians unless we can definitively prove that we are helping humanity as well. We see him as a weapon, and he sees us as a threat.

          • Quite frankly. Osiris sort of sucks at predicting the future. Why? Because he’s using Vex tech, that can’t probabaly equate light into the predictions, hence why he’s been wrong about Penoptes, Saint-14 and most likely wrong about Rasputin IF he’s basing his aggression of some form of future he’s seen in the Infinite Forest. Rasputin’s directive is to protect humanity at all costs. And arming him would help that directive, but yes, there is a threat. Rasputin hasn’t always been right, and his capabilities as an AI only stretch so far. And while Rasputin’s had the entire dark age to study every enemy, including guardians (Felwinter theory), he also gets busted into several times. He doesn’t view guardians as part of humanity. So while we mightn’t have to be concerned about the last city, we may be concerned about his interests in defending guardians alongside humanity.

          • Why did we empower the Sundial? That thing has a core that’s whispering.

          • I think everyone is misinterpreting that cinematic. I think Osiris saw the past while trying to save Saint 14 and he probably saw Rasputin attack the traveler to keep it from leaving back in the Golden Age, since the light of the Traveler is humanity's only hope to survive the invasions. He knocked a chunk into the EDZ to make sure we'd always have the light. It's the only way it makes sense for Osiris to say he "saw what (rasputin) did" and then a few seconds later tells him to choose a side...

            • Why would he turn against the guardians, though? His primary objective is to defend humanity. And that requires him to cooperate with the guardians for now.

            • I don’t really see why this is a question to begin with. It’s clearly stated that there is indeed a real reason why the Cabal are doing this. Due to the failure of the Sundial mission, the Red Legion has no more options left, no more plans, no more cards to play. Launching the Almighty is their last move of pure desperation. Rasputin has nothing to do with this. The Red Legion isn’t stupid, they know who and what he is. They wouldn’t listen to him if he told them to do something so crazy. They definitely no he is their enemy. Additionally, how would he even communicate with the Cabal, let alone without someone like Ana catching wind of it? And that cutscene with Osiris and Rasputin was clearly placed in the context and timeframe of Season of Dawn. As far as I remember, Bungie has never shown us a cutscene that takes place in the future, especially not that far. And lastly, as others have already said, Rasputin has never stopped protecting humanity after his reemergence. He clearly states in the end cutscene of Warmind that this is still his primary directive. He’s distrusting of Guardians and the Traveler. His method of protecting humanity are unorthodox to us and have been controversial, but he would never let the Last City get wiped out like that.

I don't think he's necessarily on our side, but i definitely think he's not against us. He knows the Darkness is coming back, and he was around the first time it came (he was probably a lot more heavily armed back then too). Look how well that turned out. Rasputin isn't dumb. He knows that if he wants to survive the coming war, he HAS to back the Guardians. We're the only people with a chance in hell to beat the Darkness.

            • I mean, you propose this like it's an out of the box original thought, like: "bros, hear me out, I got this crazy theory here.." And it's literally the main plot, expressed by multiple cut scenes and dialogues lmao. *Every character in destiny* "Idk man, should we really fully arm Rasputin? We don't really know where his allegiance lies. He could end up our most fearsome enemy. Can we trust it?" *You* "Hear me out guys, I got this crazy plot twist I just thought of! What if it's a bad idea to arm Rasputin??? What if we can't trust it??" Lololol kay

              • The problem with Rasputin is he has a distrusts for the Guardians and the Traveler. However, he still stands by his purpose to preserve humanity if he can.

                • <Rasputin's AI seems to be above "going rampant" like the AI in Halo do. Rasputin's effective against a lot of things currently in the system, but if he wants to have a chance in hell at surviving the second Collapse he's gonna need us around. He literally won't survive without us and even still I doubt he'll survive in general.>
