I would say that am a medium-ish skill PVP player (though in all fairness I am patently aware that I may be on the wrong part of the Dunning-Kruger curve here- I could just be total garbage).
In the olden days, the Skill Based Matchmaking days, I would be at top of the team about as often as I would be at the bottom of the team, and I generally wound up in the middle ranks. It was a good mix of wins and losses just about every time. Lobbies were mostly well balanced with everyone generally near the same ELO score. I almost never felt like I was rolling over people and I rarely felt like I was being rolled over. It was a good time. The only time I'd really get rolled was when I grouped with my friends who are *much* better than I was, and we would match against people who were closer in skill to them than to me. Still, not terrible. I was a Silver I of Silver II ranked player in Control.
Then Bungie eliminated all skill based matchmaking. Oh Lordy.
Right now, the lobbies I am in are so lopsided that most of the time it's not remotely pleasant.
I don't know how they arrange SBM v CBM, but if I were to guess, it seems that in the Skill Based Matchmaking days, ELO scores within a SBM team were constrained to being within a modest standard deviation of each other and that team was then matched against another team with a similarly ranged ELO score with a similar distribution. This resulted in the kind of experiences I was having before the elimination of SBM.
And now with CBM, it sure feels like Bungie arranges and balances lobbies based solely upon the total team ELO score with no concern for the distribution of ELO scores within a team.
As an example, see my linked disaster report. What kind of experience am I supposed to walk away with when I am matched against a team where three of the players are in the top 0.9%, 0.3% and 0.1% of all Destiny players. It really doesn't matter that they balanced that lobby by putting people with even lower ELO than I have on their team (we had a 91% and a 92% chance of winning respectively, but in reality we had zero chance of winning). While you can "balance" a wrestling team of six 13-year-olds against a team of five 9-year-olds and The Rock. How is that a going to end? How is that balanced? How is that fun for anyone? How in the world would someone design a system that let that happen?
Bungie could have implemented a system whereby players could choose whether they wanted SBM or CBM and let them decide the kind of experience they wanted to have. It would have allowed players to opt in to getting crushed by people of such high skill that when one adds up the KDA of the losing team it wouldn't come close to the KDA of the top person of the other team. I mean, one could totally chose that experience. Or players could say "Oh HELL no", chose to play against people of similar skill. If your response to that is "But then no one would ever play SBM", I'll allow the response to that the be an exercise for the reader.
As it is now, Bungie feeds low skill crucible players to high skill players and I am profoundly resentful and disappointed in this decision. PVP went from fun to miserable.
Getting bagged by Diamond skill level players when I'm running around at Bronze III or Silver II is not even humbling. It's abuse by design. I know the responses here. "Gut gud"- and dude, I have. But there is no level of me getting good that changes the outcome of the experiences that I am having.
This misery must be by design. It is such a powerfully demoralizing and painful user experience that it can't possibly be an accident. Some game designer changed the way matchmaking works and boy do they they sure seem happy about the outcome. Is it any wonder why cheating on PC increased dramatically once this change was implemented? [I still hate cheaters, and if I uttered the horrors I wish upon them every damn game it would probably get me on a watch list. But I can certainly see the motivation to cheat.]
Sure, Aztecross and MTashed and Joker and the host of other streamers sing the praises of CBM and aren't roasting Bungie in their channels, but for people who don't stream or who don't have an audience, are our voices heard? How? Is that here? Does a frustrated forum post from one person make a ripple? Almost certainly not.
I haven't heard anyone from Bungie address this issue other than to say "Skill based matchmaking is good" and "Play and enjoy quick games with lower stakes" (which I take to mean getting mercy'd on the regular, or mercying the other team on the regular because that PVP god was on your team this time). I am not going to learn anything in either of those matches.
"Thanks. I hate it."
Bring back SBMM, and allow users to chose the kind of matchmaking they want to experience.

They have literally already done what you are asking them to do this season.

Edited by enraged: 9/27/2020 3:24:27 PMIt’s quick play. It’s not that serious. When i lose in quick play, it doesn’t really bother me since A) this game isn’t competitive, and B) it’s in a social/casual playlist that should not have skill factored into simply because there isn’t a “real” incentive to win such as ranks or worthy rewards. There’s no punishment for losses. Connection quality should be of the utmost importance in quick play/control or whatever. Although I will say, connections have been kinda strange lately and hopefully bungie can look into that.
-
Youve got comp. Go there.
-
SBMM desperately needs to return, pvp is not fun any more. Please Bungie.
-
SBMM is not needed. SBMM polluted the game and created the skill gap that you seem to have described in this post. SBMM made bad players think they were good and kept them in a bubble, shielded from the average or decent players. CBMM needs to stay permanently (and comp actually needs a proper ranking system) to reverse the effects of SBMM.
-
Just play competitive or trials
-
Absolutely not, you being inept at something doesn't mean you get to segregate fellow players in casual 6vs6 that's only "crime" was improving. You want close, sweaty, competitive games? Comp is that way ->
-
So from what I understood nerf fusion rifles?
-
No. Destiny is not a competitive shooter and skill based matchmaking hamstrings the search times and makes the game worse in the long run.
-
I just realized something. The high skill players *need* the less skilled players or the game isn't fun for them. They need them bad. The "less skilled" players don't really need the high skill players. At all. They would and can and have gotten along perfectly well without them. And as I have experienced, those "high skill" players can and do often ruin the experience for others. Those people making fun of you because you aren't as good as they are at PVP? Calling you a coward or talking about how you are "hiding", not realizing that this is about user experience and fun, not the kumite? They need you. You don't need them.
-
I understand your qualms about matchmaking, but let me correct you on something. You are not medium skilled Being of medium skill implies your overall should at least be 1.0 overall, but your trials report indicates you are .86 in comp and .82 in crucible. I normally cut slack on KD but your gold medals don't even hit 50, you have 15. To be considered of medium skill- i expect at least that. You are not bad- but right now you hit a learning curve. I started out just the same- and I am still improving (go ahead and look me up). Sbmm was a nightmare, I prefer cbmm much more. If you find ways to improve the holes in your game Ie 1) Play next to cover, have engagment plans and escape plans. 2) Pick the weapons you know well and are strong with (meta or not.) 3) accepting the strong parts and weak parts of your game so you can come up with solutions to avoid unnecessary deaths and plays. Simply those will help increase the probability of winning more gunfights consistently- and thus your "kd" will reflect that. With CBMM it is the perfect time to work on it. Why? The majority of my lobbies are with average pvp players- and chances are (i checked your lobbies btw), you too encounter average pvp players. You will get steamrolled until you adjust. I find it completely unfair that a year ago and last year I had to be in cbmm lobbies (getting farmed) and I had to adjust upwards- but those crying for sbmm to return want a lobby to cater to them thinking they'll learn. That is not the case- you will not learn in sbmm lobbies (i sure didn't.) I learned by versing players of various skill levels and adjusting. Did I get mad? Yes. Did I also pub stomp and farm others? Heck yes. Did I improve? Considering I came from similar stats to yours to where I am now (1.3 comp, 1.51 overall, Unbroken, Flawless, 100 gold medals)..... yes I improved. You got this- do what i did. Accept responsibility for your actions in each gunfight- (most of the time you lose cause it is your fault- i accepted this and learned from it)- accept you do have strengths and weaknesses. I gurantee you any form of matchmaking won't help you until you do that.

Id rather get clapped over waiting 20 min for a single match.

Edited by Dubufu: 9/24/2020 6:55:11 PMI don't agree. Destiny 2's PVP experience revolves around an ever-expanding sandbox of weapons, perks, stats, and abilities which make the game fundamentally unbalanced at its core. It was never meant to be a truly competitive experience. Normally I would support it in games with strong competitive integrity, but not this one. Skill in this game does exist, but there are way too many things that can mimic "skill" from cheezy builds and weapons that often require very low effort to use thanks to aim assist being a weapon stat, and from bullet magnetism being incredibly strong.

Edited by Ogma: Destroyer of Worlds: 9/24/2020 5:56:54 PMMatch 1: mercy loss ...we’re breaking up those teams to find a better match Match 2: mercy win ...we’re breaking up those teams to find a better match Match 3: very 1 sided loss, complete match ...we’re breaking up those teams to find a better match Match 4: very 1 sided win complete match ...we’re breaking up those teams to find a better match Match 5: mercy loss ...we’re breaking up those teams to find a better match A better match..... 🤔 Based on what? Connection? If so, why any message at all if that’s already how it works? If it’s not based on connection when it does this then what IS it based on? Skill? If so, this is just a terribly inaccurate version of SBMM, with extra steps. FYI, this was my experience the other day. Every match 1 sided as hell, several mercies, and I got that message between every match. Makes no sense. Just bring back SBMM.

i dont play pvp unless its sbmm, or mayhem.

The general quality of the responses to this post are not in line with this thought/effort put into this post. This is "gitgud", The Comments Section. Maybe turn down the salt and make an attempt to empathize, even if you don't agree?

Edited by Guardian: 9/23/2020 12:23:27 PMElimination has some SBMM. Also SBMM is a contreversial subject in D2. Personally I dont want to match against crouch spammers with spare rations and quickdraw shotguns every match like I was last season. I dont think the 1% of players want to match the 1% every match. I prefer to match against every now and again a person of my skill. But i can see why some people want SBMM

Mark the calendar, nov 10th it returns

You’re a 0.8 kd, that’s way below average.

My lobbies seem to be fine when I play. It feels like D1 at the beginning of TTK. Everyone playing aggressive. Some people using meta weapons other people doing super random shit like cheesing sidearms with mechaneers tricksleeves. It's all wonky. THAT IS FUN

Edited by SScottF 2112: 9/23/2020 8:25:10 PMI'd love to see a much larger population that would allow for a bunch of game modes. There just aren't enough people playing to further divide PVP the population. In the short term... Do you really enjoy Freelance Survival? It has SBMM. If so, play that. If not, then SBMM/CBMM isn't the issue.
-
There should be heavy SBMM modes and heavy CBMM modes in the director so you can choose from there. This is sort of the case right now but there are not enough SBMM modes... the only SBMM modes are survival and elim, which are unpopular, while rumble and all the 6v6 playlists and even iron banner are CBMM. Rumble should either just be SBMM or it should have a comp rumble mode (Coming from someone who is top 30 on PS4 rumble and top 80 on PC; the mode sucks right now with pure CBMM) and the weekly 6v6 playlist should be SBMM. Classic mix, the rotating playlists (scorched, breakthrough, mayhem etc) and normal rumble stay CBMM.
-
Imagine losing game while dropping 40+ kills and playing the objectives. You have a chance to get better. Use it. The game isn't forcing you into no win scenarios like it is for many other people. I firmly believe that this is part of the reason you see " stacks ". Can't give them bots if they have a full team.

Make an elo playlist with cheesy weapons banned.

Be quiet
