I am a new player, just a few hours to my name, and I love this game, seriously it is amazing. But when I tried out PvP in the Crucible I got matched up with people that were 1030-60 versus my mere 795. I did get 1 kill though. But that's beside the point. Can it just match players based on their light, then eventually switch to rank?

As others have said, light level is not applicable in regular crucible, it only matters in Iron Banner and Trials. There's also no rank based matchmaking. Bungie in their infinite wisedom have also changed matchmaking recently to favour connections, so regular crucible is not skill based matchmaking.... I would suggest you equip any 600RPM auto rifle as they are currently very good and strong.

Your light level does not matter in regular crucible, you can be 750 going against a 1060 and you will do the same damage. Now what guns you have and how you set your armor makes a difference.
