In rock, it's a staple that just needs to be part of the song because it is part of the DNA of it. It was present from the earliest blues / rock songs from the 50's, and it has remained a standard feature of most all rock songs since. I'm having trouble thinking of any that don't have any, for most all rock I listen to is from bands that have major guitarists in them. The solo adds all ranges of feelings and emotions - warmth, passion, joy, highs, lows, anger, despair, antagonism,... - just in what the song conveys, but in notes.
