Since the Vanguard Reputation rework, I've been having trouble maximising my Vanguard Rep due to how it works... even playing to how the description say it works doesn't work as intended most of the time; unless I grind Nightfalls, in which it seems to work as intended.
To avoid confusion, this is me quoting the "Vanguard Streak" description from within the game.
"Complete strikes and Seasonal activities to gain Vanguard Rank Points. Complete them back-to-back to increase your activity streak. Earn more Rank Points with higher streaks for higher difficulty Nightfalls."
I've done the Vanguard Strikes back-to-back (Remaining in matchmaking) on multiple occasions since this season started and only gotten a 1/5 streak for 4 - 5 strikes in a row. Yet, when I do the Nightfall multiple times in a row, it counts each Nightfall completed to the streak total. Either the wording of the description is vague and can be misinterpreted, or it's not programmed correctly and only works with the afore mentioned Nightfalls... which renders the Vanguard Playlist pointless at that point.
I've heard that it may have something to do with "Joining Allies" teleporting you further into the strike negating the streak gain, as well as joining a strike half-way through or at the end boss doing that... but I don't know for certain if those are the primary causes, or if it is (as mentioned earlier in the post) just poorly programmed and buggy for the Vanguard Strikes playlist.
I would like to know what's going on with this so we can avoid any further confusion and frustration!

If you stay in the matchmaking sequence after the strike, the streak will continue. If you leave and go to orbit and relaunch you disrupt the streak
