This game needs less grind.

As a long time player with a decent track record, I can confidently say that there are too many grinds in this game. It needs to be dialed back a notch. I am not trying to brag here, but I've done a duo master atheon, I've gotten every active raid seal, conqueror, and I'm a solo run away from having all the dungeon-related seals. I've done all the seasonal seals, and the DLC seals. So, when I start a new season at +0 artifact, 10 light out from "pinnacle cap", it annoys me. I can do the hardest sh*t in this game, but the game makes me prove that I'm still capable of it every season or else it locks me out of that content. The grinds, as I see them, currently. 1. Pinnacle grinds There's a soft cap, a hard cap, and a pinnacle cap that goes up 40 every year, not counting the massive jump when a dlc launches. I get DLC bumps, because it's new content, new area, and thus it makes sense to see new growth. Adds start out wrecking you, and you eventually grow to shrug them off as being completely undeserving of your attention. But pinnacle grinds are little more than thinly veiled attempts to get people back into what should've bee one off activities like vox or preservation to waste our time. 2. Artifact grinds This has improved over prior years, where GM ready is just over 100 season ranks instead of like 200 previously, but it's still the same crappy seasonal challenge and bounty farm. It takes an eternity to get there just by playing the game, and endgame stuff like raids give you almost nothing compared to basic pvp playlists. It's literally just filler for the first few weeks of the season, and it's entirely unnecessary. I could see maybe using the artifact to unlock mods, but having it increase your light level is a stupid idea. 3. Exotic grinds Every season has new exotics which means back to the master lost sectors (which you can barely even do until you do the previous two grinds) to get the latest piece of armor. Then, you have the seasonal quest line for the new exotic weapon catalyst too, which almost always involves some long @ss grind getting pvp kills with this new off meta weapon. It sucks. 4. Crafted weapon grinds. 8 new weapons, each needing 5 frames, and the drop rate gradually going down every season has most players basically revolting. Oh, and at least 3 of them are new pve and pvp meta, so you have to get them to keep up with the power creep, just so they can be nerfed or power crept next season for the next batch of 40 frames you have to get, craft, and level up, and then craft again. Ugh. 5. Seasonal challenges You know the only thing worse than playing gambit? Playing gambit with 3 people trying to get sniper rifle kills on red bar adds because that's what the game asked you to do, and it's the only reasonably good way to get xp early in the season without doing gunsmith repeatable bounties for 8 straight hours. No, Bungo, I don't have a good sidearm I can take into every activity to get the 1000 kills necessary to finish a weekly seasonal challenge and NOBODY likes grinding 100 chest opens on the Leviathan or 100 champion stuns in master ketchcrash. Stop. Making. Us. Compete. With. Each. Other. In. Co-op. Game. Modes. @ssholes. ----- Now those are just the grinds we get every season. There are other grinds that are omnipresent. 1. Stat rolls Armor has to be double or triple 100s or they suck, according to streamers and reddit. Always gotta be looking out for better armor rolls with artifice slots or whatever the latest craze is. 2. Raid exotic/Adept/red border weapon grinds Gotta get that Cataclysmic with bait and switch or your dps is garbage. Gotta get that adept weapon from trials or you're the worst pvp player ever. Gotta get the GM adept weapons because they're new meta somewhere I'm sure. Whatever. -blam!-. Remember when we all grinded for Stormchaser God rolls and then Bungie nerfed it a few weeks into the following season, citing a fire rate "bug" the gun didn't have? Oh, raid exotics gave a 0.1% drop rate? Go f*ck yourself, prepare to do Oryx CPs until your kids graduate high school in 15 years. 3. Gilded seals Got conqueror only once? You cleat suck, I have mine gilded 6 times because I'm a gamer. Prepare to spend time doing the same challenges again just to brag to strangers on the internet that you've done the challenges more times than they have. 4. Too many seals 1 for the season, 1 for pvp, 1 for the new dungeon, 1 for dlc, 1 for your mom, 1 for the homies, 2 for the previously free but now premium mid season event, etc. Jesus, give it a rest. 5. Festival of the grind Nothing more than a late season attempt to keep people engaged. You made people grind lost sectors for 2 weeks for some lame @ss loot and a seal nobody cares about. 35 freaking lost sectors for 25 triumph score points and the same Lincoln green pulse rifle we've been disassembling since year 1 because it's actually garbage. Glorious. Next time, give us bad omens and that one grenade launcher that dropped every 14 seconds for a year. ----- I'm sure I'm missing 1 or two, but that's nearly a dozen grinds going simultaneously most of the time. It's too many. Stop it. We're humans. You don't pay us. This is nonsense.

  • I’ll second the crafting grind because it’s just grinding for more grinding. Power level needs a rework artifact same. But get better and deal with it

Please just no. This game has no grind. If anything it needs MORE grind. We have literally nothing to do in game right now. You don’t need bait and switch cata just get the void linear you can craft for free and you’ll do just as much damage. Stat rolls? Are you kidding me lol if you don’t want stats don’t go for them just get resilience. Really seals? Lol please just delete this post. Seals are way too easy and should be more of a grind.

By definition, the word ”Grind” translates into ”Dull Hard Work” ( heavy emphasis on the word ‘Dull’ ). As such, it doesn’t really matter if there is too much “Grind”, or not enough “Grind”, because by definition, “The Grind” will always be dull. So, Destiny’s problem is that the daily gameplay loop isn’t fun or engaging.

    • I personally don't have an issue with grinding. I have an issue when the grind wasn't worth my time. The longer the grind the better the payoff needs to be and lately payoff has been lacking.

    • "dialed back a notch" made me laugh. It's not even "grind" that this game has too much of. It's completely intentional waste of time mechanics. This game is entirely designed around keeping players busy. With every single activity/quest/bounty/event, their checklist has "how to make the players spend as much time possible in the game" at the very top of the checklist. "Fun" has been absent since 2019. They literally do not give a damn about player enjoyment anymore. Every single activity is making you run it till you wanna puke. Remember whisper mission and zero hour? Awesome activitites that everyone still talks about to this day. You only "had" to run them for 3 weeks to get everything out of them but people ran them voluntarely for like 20-50 times. Guess what, cause they were FUN. Now activities have a timegated weekly repetition checklist. EVERY time. May it be random exo rolls, may it be trimph progressions for a seal or even red borders that are acquirable once a week. I don't want to do stuff on a weekly basis when papa Bungie tells me to do what and when they want me to do it. If i have a week off at the beginning of a season, let me burn through my content. Stop dictating what and when and at which pace we have to do stuff. We are grown adults we don't need no hand holding ffs. That's why i lost interest in the game.

    • The game has to have grind, because without it there is not a whole lot of reason to play the game. The core playlsit of this game is utterly trash. Strikes, Gambit, Crucible are all lacking in replay value. So Bungie has to keep you on the hamster wheel to create an artificial reason to keep playing. Take away the grind, you take away any reason to play this game for more than couple hours a week.

      • Yeah. Less grind. Desired loot faster. Denser content to keep us enthralled with using said loot. More maps. More strikes.
What we need is more meaningful grind and better ways to do it.
I'm using this quote because it is the truth. There has been a major issue with D2 even though it started with D1, and 8 years later this shouldn't be as bad as it is in D2 but no one can change this business annoying logic. When the original Bungie was designing D1 they really didn't know what they were doing when it comes to grinding because they went from Halo to a whole new world, one they have never dealt with. They were learning and over time they got a little better at it by learning how to create an incentive for players to want to grind, making most of what was to grind for at that time worth the time, but they also had the problem with handing things out like candy, but later they adjusted that as well. Learning from one's mistakes so they know how to handle a situation better than they did the first time around, something this business refuses to do. Here were are with this business with D2 and that issue between handing things out like candy or way overdone grind is far worse off than it ever was in D1 that only lasted 3 years, yet here it is D2 is what going on 6 years? What this business has done is hurt the game because this business is all over the damn place with no consistency at all, 6 years of this back and forth. They always go from one extreme to the other, and 8 years later they still refuse to figure out (what a happy medium is, or at least try.) How the hell does a business not learn after 8 years that handing things out like candy destroys any value anything in any game may have had at one point, and how have they not learned that way overdone grind, especially with repetitive content in this game that barely offering anything worth the time grinding for, not realize it drives player away?

This games grind is terrible. There is a such thing as too much grind in this game and not everything needs to be so redundant. You mentioned the raid exotics, the lost sector loot and the armor stat grind and they resonated with me the most. I don’t understand why we can’t reallocate armor stats on legendary armor and reroll exotics armor. I don’t see it as game breaking or taking away any grind. There’s still tons of things to grind. I played the lost sector a couple days ago and I quit trying after my 10th attempt. I know some people will say “that’s not a lot” and they’d be right. But I do not have the patience for any ridiculous grinding anymore. In D1 I grinded my -blam!- off for a jade rabbit all throughout year 2 and it didn’t drop until December after rise of iron came out. I still never got a god roll eyasluna either and I played pvp a lot. Honestly I barely even saw that weapon drop. So there goes one waste of time, almost 2 but jade rabbit dropped. In d2 I did that stupid quest for the broadsword. That quest was the worst quest I’ve ever done for a weapon that was meh. It’s not that I had to do comp or any pvp exactly. I can play some pvp no problem. Most of the quests I can and have gotten done such as ace, chaperone and others. But the issue was the 5 valor resets in a single season. They could have just said 5 resets regardless of the season and it would have been less stressful. The insane grinders would have gotten it within 1 season while people like me would have gotten it completed in 2. By the time I got it done I didn’t feel like playing destiny for a long time. If it was a healthy grind I would’ve kept playing. So here I am with no more patience for grinds in this game.

      • I honestly feel the RNG is what makes the grind too much grind. They have RNG inside of RNG multiplied by RNG raised to the RNG power. Crafting reduced some of that stress but the "crafting" system relies massively on... wait for it... RNG LOL. I enjoy playing the game. There's a ton of content and stuff to do but the RNG kills it for me. That and the weird h-0m-0 er0t1c armor designs.

        • TLDR. Didn't come here to read a thesis. But going from the post topic I'd say we don't need less grind. What we need is more meaningful grind and better ways to do it.

          • I mean the problem is the content is so ridiculously boring now with crafting and 40% dmg resistance and ridiculously short cool downs on abilities. Even if you get high enough to do the content it’s no longer fun. Even day one is ridiculously easy and that’s the most enjoyable content.

          • Agree with a large portion of the rant. It’s like they actively punish you for having a life outside of the game by pelting you with all types of FOMO -blam!-. On the one hand I get that they try to keep people active throughout the season by giving them stuff to do. But the same model season after season, while getting incrementally grindier, is cheap quantity over quality. I’ve stopped trying to chase raid exotics, I just try to raid because it’s fun. A buddy had to grind VoG over 70+ times to get Mythoclast. The drop rate is beyond ridiculous. Honestly, why not tie the exotic drop rate to the amount of full raid completions. That way you get people to run the whole thing instead of boss cp farming each week, plus they get an increasing chance for the damn thing to drop. Win-win

            • It's not that this game needs less grind. It needs less meaningless grind. Rewarding grinds are fun. Destiny has very few rewarding grinds, and even when it does drop a reward worth chasing that grind is usually finished pretty soon after coming out.
