Why is Destiny 2 getting slower every season?

This game seems to be slowly degrading into an unplayable mess. Teleporting enemies and rubber-banding enemies in every activity is getting more common. Ridiculously long load times for the tower are becoming the norm. Long pauses just to see the stats on a weapon or view a shader happen more often than not. DIM gives the message "bungie.net is slow right now" almost constantly, making the loadout feature unusable unless you want to take a five-minute break while your loadout changes. All this is happening with a dwindling player base, so I just know it will get worse with the new season and much worse when the new expansion hits next year. Is Bungie even trying to improve things?

  • Man I’ve been attempting to play some pvp and it has been soul crushing. Void soul not working when dealing damage. Melee and shotgun to players who take little to no damage and then one melee me. Mobility feels like I’m running with lead shoes while other players catch up to me from the other side of the map and smash me, one shot me. It now feels like the only way to play this game is on PC with hacks. Over the weekend PvP was ok more balanced games than not but today has been brutal. No fed servers of course, but network manipulation, aim bots and wall hacks abound. Cheaters know they can get away with this. I want to play a competitive, fun game but instead it’s just brutal.

    The engine. Ex employees, hundreds of em, wrote mostly about how horrific the engine and tools were when they worked at Bungie. One employee said just to move a pillar 2 metres he would have to leave the map loading overnight and pray nonstop that it didn't crash again by the next morning he got back in. The engine was made for Halo on original Xbox, before even 360. It is so outdated, old, slow, and overworked, it can't handle anything anymore. Hense Destiny Content Vault had to be introduced cause the engine was crashing more than it was loading so they had to gut the game. The game is slow at processing its own code and images. I wouldn't be shocked if Lightfall is the most unplayable glitchy -blam!- in Destiny history. You may ask "Why did they choose it then?". See when Activision had Bungie by the balls, in the contract, you can read for yourself, Activision forced Bungie to use their own engine and not pay other companies from sales to use their engines (like Unreal). This was still an obligation when Destiny 2 was created and Bungie had only one option, PULL OUT THE OLD AND DEAD HALO ENGINE FROM BEFORE 2004! Bungie is still using the engine and fighting with it cause everything was made in it so splitting with Activision didn't open the door for a new engine. Bungie had no time to create Destiny 1, a new engine from scratch AND redo the Destiny 1 story from scratch cause they lost key employees last minute back then. Bungie didn't think ahead cause of one of the words I just said "think".

    Bungie is pooling their resources on their new game title, Matter. Sadly, the Destiny franchise is just a cash flow to fund the game and its costs.This sounds like another Bungie hate post but it's just facts, you can research their new IP and just how much its costing them. That money needs to come from somewhere and they can't upgrade or fix Destiny as that would cost too much, hence the buggy mess.

  • Long story short: Server architecture + age along with an always-increasing load with each new activity added, fluctutating with how many players are actively on. For how awful content vaulting is, with how awful the servers are NOW, it would be far worse if we still had Year 1 content. Which has me curious that they announced "No More Vaulting". If a server overhaul is / was in the works for Lightfall, then that would win a lot of people back. It wouldn't make sense otherwise unless they're too high off their own supply and are just pushing it through while hoping the server rooms don't ignite.

    • It's our console, at least for destiny 2, i feel like when i used to play destiny on ps3, i was playing Skolas, so we went to a plataform took cover and i asked my friends & vice versa, cover me ill get heavy, ill.change weapons, armor etc, Ps4 is getting there at leastbfor Destiny, some friends have ps5 the menus are fast.

      • If they can't keep up. We need a destiny 3 with an engine that can support everything. It's not getting better. And if this continues. Lightfall is going to be a little "on the nose" for destiny.

        • The game has always been slow. I remember teleporting or rubberbanding/self-healing enemies back in D2's first raid, The Leviathan. There has always been issues loading menus, albeit better at times, it's still been a launch issue. Not saying that it's not getting worse, or doesn't need to be looked into, not trying to be negative, but I don't think it's going to get much better.

          • Unfortunately connection issues are typically not Bungie or your connection. It is between your ISP and Bungie. Partially due to D2 networking code. traceroute seems to show issues with Cloudfire controlled routers when network connections slow. It is amazing all the hops your data makes from a to b. Nobody talks about these middlemen. Users will see performance drops on everything is tied to local equipment.

            • The recent trend with the huge loss in quality of the delivered content tells me that they simply reduced servers dedicated to D2 aswell. They are simply slowly putting D2 on the backburner more and more. Dev amount working on D2 must be laughably low aswell from what they deliver. Guess D2's time is up. They most likely throw most of their resources and money towards their upcoming mobile game development and the competitive pvp game they apparently develop. D2 is just their cash cow game that gets kept alive with minimal resources and effort thrown into. Just to milk players till their new games are ready to release and they can let D2 die. And before you say "servers? It's peer to peer smartass". Yea but login servers just like data storages are a thing aswell. And those things are literally what op is criticising. And we can all feel it. Has to be them downgrading server costs to the bare minimum.

              • Firstly, Bungle's reliance on Halo Era 2008ish Peer to Peer Networking is showing it's age big time. The lack of properly Tuned Regional Dedicated Host Servers that almost every other developer is making the game a wet stinky Fecal mess of lag, rubber banding, unkillable bullet swallowing enemies and very poor load performance. Secondly, Bungle has hit a new low on average players for the month on steam: https://steamcharts.com/app/1085660 which are the only real published population numbers we have. We are now 10% lower than the lowest level before. So instead of SBMM or CBMM it's ALPMM (Anyone Left Playing Matchmaking) now and you will be matched against anyone on the earth now, regardless of their Skill Level or what flavour of Potato you use for a Modem.

              • This game really is just a 9-5 at this point. We went from getting excited for every reset to being thankful when we finish our Weeklies so we can do something else.

                • Agree it’s pretty annoying. My guess would be some form of bad coding management and the optimization that goes along with that becomes too difficult to maintain

                    Got a brand new PC a few weeks ago top of the line specs and love that it still takes and act of god to pull up my map while in the tower.

                    Old gen consoles are slowing it down . Only way to improve the game is to end support for old consoles
