To: All Guardians

I get that there are good players in Destiny... I even understand that some are more competitive than others; however, sending messages that are not nice, such as you are a waste of space when I played Trials or melee me before a round, simply is not cool. I understand the frustration... am I great at Crucible, depends on if they actually match the teams correctly... I do play a lot of Gambit, so I get the frustration when players are less than par... I think for the first time ever, I lost 10 Gambit matches in a row... I did not once send anyone on the team a message telling them they are a waste of space, nor did I shoot at them or melee them...that is just wrong and rude... Bungie promotes mental health and being there for guardians... have you thought about YOUR impact on someone who may be new or not as good as you when you act that way?! I am just saying... I know Bungie can't stop the jerks or the trolls... perhaps this is why I choose to do everything alone... On that, I am out... Kind of sorry I already paid for Lightfall... Best of Luck Guardians...

  • Sounds like you got some strongly worded hatemail there guardian. Allow me to be the first to congratulate you! Wear it like a badge of honor guardian- you had enough impact on someone else in game they decided they would rather stop playing, and message you instead of playing the game like they originally planned. You made a difference!

Report any messages that are toxic and abusive to Bungie. Follow through with doing it until you know it’s being reviewed. If they message you on PSN, save the messages and report it to Sony. Sony doesn’t play around with it and will suspend accounts much quicker than Bungie. If they can’t access their Sony account, they won’t be playing any online games D2 included. There was a pretty toxic D2 player that made that mistake with me and was given a harsh suspension. So save the messages, follow through with reporting it and make sure it’s in the hands of people who can do something about it.

  • I've been teabagged a lot recently. Even in quickplay. Have no idea why. I don't even perform very well. Maybe they want me to feel ashamed or bad about myself? I have some anger issues but trying to stay positive now! Although it's hard. :P

  • The difficulty of modern gaming is that if someone is struggling on your team and you give advice on how to do better they usually tell you to bugger off and not tell them how to play, then procede to be a hindrance to the team and cause more pain. People need to learn to take advice when given and not get offended taking it as a personal attack. Yes some people out there just want to cause people grief that's just how the internet works now.

  • I don’t bag unless bagged. I emote like an mfer though. I be blowing kisses and dropping headstones all day. I literally communicate through emotes. It’s all in good fun. If people are taking bagging seriously, that’s just a wee bit soft. If someone bags me because I got out played, cool I understand. If someone bags me for no reason, It is my sole purpose for existing to hunt them down and strike down upon them with furious anger and righteous fury. Then emote. 😀

    • THIS IS NOT FOR ANY ONE PERSON IN PARTICULAR. IT IS A SUMMERIZATION OF THE WHOLE THREAD. Figured I'd put that as a disclaimer so maybe ppl won't get aggravated at me. TOXICITY: unfortunately we will have that as long as humans exist. Some days it's like water off a duck's back, other days it's water to a dry sponge. How we, WE as in everyone, react to it depends on our mood/how our day is going. SBMM FIRETEAM EVENTS: it's all random if you ask me. Been matched with noobs, been matched with vets, been matched with both. Had some good teams with more wins than losses, had bad teams with more losses than wins. Too many aspects to detail, so I'll just discuss an issue I had with DoE toxicity... 2 players out of 6 incessantly killed everyone else on the team using Eager Edge sword(s). The entire match. Text chat was off so no idea if anything was said, nothing said in voice. At the end of the match, 3 of us who went in as a fireteam prior to SBMM all reported them for sabotage. Haven't seen them since. Still get a few shoulders and Eager Edge from time to time in Doe, so I just brush it off and don't revive them if I see them down. I do teabag them to let them know I saw them there lol. For the most part, I just play and go on, and adjust my playstyle to be airborne when I'm near them so I don't get "misadventure" frequently. MENTAL HEALTH: this is a tricky subject. Everyone is an individual, and what is a trigger for one, is an lol to another. We all vent to one extent or another, but what is healthy and unhealthy venting? Seeing responses to any concern/complaint in any thread... There's no defined line because of the mix of replies. Everyone's thought process, and perspective, is going to vary from person to person. Especially when level of dedication is factored in. Those who have no problem with "taking a break" usually get a reply of two with "You don't understand... I've been playing since D1Day1..." yada yada. Who says the one taking a break isn't a vet as well (beside them saying it themselves that is)? I myself am a New Light-er, 2 months playing, AND F2P. If anyone gets roasted around here, it's me lol. Anyway, no one can really say who is right about what and how they say it, because there will always be toxicity from one or another, be it a reply or OP. Though I do admit there's some OPs and/or replies that are more whiny than others, and to those... Just ignore and go on. Why add more toxicity to an already toxic seeking post/thread? Because... we just HAVE to have that "last word". Another facet to the multifaceted human being. Oh well... BOUNTIES: this one takes me a few mins to figure out. I've gone into an event (let's use Vanguard Pinnacle for example) where the elemental burn is Arc. I've seen ppl go in with sidearms or shotguns running solar or void. It takes a bit for it to dawn on me "Oh, they're doing bounties". Let's admit it... They've not been aligned with Pinnacle requirements for a while now. So when I see that in a run, I'll try to be considerate and let them be when they're shooting so they get the kill. Flip-side is: I've been the one doing the bounty, and tbh it aggravates the 💩 outta me when I'm off in an area all by myself shooting everything I see, and someone else comes in and kills the whole hoard themself. Gee, thanks, now my bounty won't get finished. Did they do it for points? Kill count? To be an -blam!- knowing I was trying to get a bounty so they messed it up on purpose? I don't know. Still bugs me either way. How I handle it from there honestly depends on my mood for the day. I've let it go, and just grind more. I've gotten vengeance and switched weapons to go and kill everything THEY we're going for. That option doesn't end well as they try to "misadventure" me at event's end. I know this is a long read, and I apologize for it, but there is a point I'll get to in the next hour or two lol. CHAT - TEXT: I have mine off. I'm Xbox and honestly, I just don't want to take the time to type/speak it all out. So I can't say for sure what platform(s) or setups have better text options. I know some fireteams use it, but if it's not helpful to have it on, turn it off. If it's necessary to have it on, have it recorded for proof of threats, harassment, toxicity, and report the ayer(s). Does it do any good? Maybe, maybe not. I know it worked for me in that I don't match with them anymore in events. CHAT - VOICE: I only use mine when I'm in a clan and one or more are in my fireteam. Which I'm clanless atm, so I have my settings to full game in the chat mixer. Occasionally I'll hear someone in-game, but they're not really talking, I'll just hear the grunts and words of disapproval when they die or don't get the objective. I've not (not yet) had verbal degrading from poor game results. I HAVE had however, some interesting entertainment in the background when playing. Usually domestic debates over whether the game is more important to housework. And the hubby/boyfriend usually answers in frustration "I TOLD YOU I'LL GET IT WHEN IM DONE HERE!" lol. Ok, y'all's eyes burning from the read, so summerization time! Yay! We're all different, have different views, opinions, mental thresholds, reactions, responses, etc. How we react/respond with forethought or in heat of the moment is all different on any day of the week, and what mood we're in. So what do we do? The best we can and just go on. If someone says something we don't agree with, nor understand the basis for why they said it, why reply with "You need to" this, that, and the other? What works for one doesn't always work for another. Helpful hints, constructive points to ponder... sure, nothing wrong with that. Toxicity? Never a place for that in game nor forum. But you'll always have that one (or several) that just HAVE to be toxic because they know no other way to be. If for no other reason... Report them. It seems to help prevent them from matching up with you in future venues, so there'll be less toxicity the next runs. Whether Bungie bans them or not... Who's to say. Possibly if enough people report toxicity, it'll eventually pile up and they may get banned. Anyway, I'm rambling. A very long winded thought to a multifaceted situation EVERY Guardian faces at one point or another. We're all supposed to be family... Let's all act like the family were supposed to be. Or I'll tell daddy Shaxx on you lmao.

This is just my opinion and thoughts on trash talking in general: As someone who has trash talked on both Destiny and CoD over the years, I can say that not everyone means what they say. Problem is that everyone is so soft these days that they take it to heart and get easily offended or hurt. If you cant take it, mute game chat and turn messages off. Just remember in the real world, that option doesnt exist. People will insult you straight to your face so you got two options: Cry about it and forever be scared or get thick skin. It only hurts if you give a dāmn about what they say. You can sit here all day long and rant on the web that someone "hurt" you because of words but that wont change anything. You have to change yourself and say "I am who i am and nothing will change that". People act differently on the internet than they do in real life. Would I say half the trash talk I do to somebodys face? No. Why? Because its just a video game and it doesn't mean anything. We all say things in the heat of the moment which in my case, thats where all the trash talk comes from. After the match ends, After we all log off, theres no point in thinking about it. One more thing: Before anyone thinks that im just a terrible person who thinks its ok to just tear others down. I dont condone it. If someone were to ever pull me to the side and said: "Ghost, Im having a bad day. Can i talk to you?". I would help that person by lending an ear. Sorry for the long reply, This is just a topic ive thought about alot over the years

            • My deal with it is. If you're not prepared for the mode. Don't attempt it. Just like raids. If you're going in with half measures and ignorance. You're wasting not just your own time. But those around you.

As long as people can still message you or taunt you in game. The problem will continue. What I like to do is be a smart @$$ when that happens. And it’s a bonus when some players don’t comprehend the choice of vocabulary I use because it’s too “complex.”

                • I feel this... Deeply. I'm NOT good at PVP. Really, truly, I realize it. I get it. So when Bungie dangles Trials in moments of triumph or season challenges, there's always a few moments where I grab my fireteam and we load up and go. And I understand the way matchmaking works in Trials, you're going to hit roadblocks, no matter what. That's the purpose of the game--sweaty skill, but also RNG to see where your skill gets tested. But when no one on my fireteam has ever gone flawless, and the other team is kitted out with Trials gear, the flawless title gilded over... Why do you bag? Why do you emote? What's the point of being so toxic? We get it--you're better than us. And before any of the "get good" comments roll in, consider how Bungie has built the pvp game modes in general. Between SBMM, where I rarely even get a lobby stable enough to finish a game, and things like Iron Banner and Trials where I regularly get steamrolled, how am I actually supposed to improve in the pvp end of things? For all of Bungie's talk about making aspirational content more accessible, they really don't do a lot to actually track player progression for any sort of funnel into that content. So why do the pvp-ers have to be quite so toxic about winning? Half the reason you won is Bungie's matchmaking put us together in an absolutely unfair matchup--Bungie's already teabagging me, you don't have to. No one needs to bag... or emote... Save that for a fair matchup that's sweaty, or when you shutdown a cheater, not the fireteam of pve veterans who have never gone flawless and are running into a 4-0 with less than 0.5 efficieny. Just be human. And the irony of the Code of Conduct reminder at the bottom of the post draft. Interesting when and where they decide to care about "playing nice"... The dbags are always going to be dbags, but Bungie can do more to keep the toxicity from socially engineering their content so hard. Granted, it also requires them putting more work into keeping their game instances live, their API active, and generally keeping things from breaking. I'm interested to see how long it takes before the new social options in Lightfall get exploited or break or generally just become meaningless because the toxic people rally to defend each other... Like many of them are already doing in this thread. You could just... not reply and let people vent and move on. Everyone will have a better day for it.

Would you rather take genuine insults to heart, or pixels on a screen telling you “you suck scrub lol” because some hardscoping dude sniped you when you walked into his sight line?

                    • I normally have everything public so anyone can talk to me, but when I play comp or trials, I lock all of that down. Pvp is full of some extremely toxic people, but to be fair, it’s made worse by Bungies terrible ranking system. You could be the strongest player of both teams, but if your team loses, your punished, it doesn’t reward individual merit at all. I think that makes the toxicity worse because people get frustrated and lash out more at teammates.

                    • The way trials is set up just BREEDS toxicity. People are absolutely desperate to win. In the event they lose, of course they’d obviously decide to be a jerk and send a message to someone else who either played bad or beat them. If you go into trials, just know what your actually going into. The desire to win so bad is going to cause this to happen A TON. One reason I will never attempt to play trials of Osiris.
