The state of Vanguard Ops Playlist since Lightfall

Before getting into it, I wanted to state that I appreciate most of the quality-of-life changes with Lightfall and think that the game is in an overall better place. However, I just wanted to make this point to share my thoughts on the vanguard ops playlist. I know there have been many discussions over the changes to the difficulty - but this post is not really about that. Rather, it is to address how I feel like there is even less of a point to running vanguard ops than there was before Lightfall came out. Since the changes, you now need to run 5 vanguard ops to acquire a pinnacle, while using the same subclass that is the active strike surge that week while it is technically more difficult, (even though it feels the same to me) which is increased from 3 completions needed to get the pinnacle from before Lightfall. The main issue I have now is that it is just as possible, and way more efficient to just run the nightfall for that week and work on the subclass matching pinnacle and the scoring pinnacle at the same time since the subclass surge matching pinnacle can be progressed in the nightfall as well. I think that needing to run 5 strikes to get the pinnacle is somewhat overkill considering the crucible and gambit pinnacles only require 3 completions and generally take around the same length of time for a single completion, give or take. I also feel like the REQUIREMENT to match the subclass surge to get the pinnacle is somewhat tedious and is counteractive to the build crafting push that bungie has been making. Being forced to use a certain subclass for 5 strikes in a row can become tedious, and being able to switch it up between strikes would be nice. If I want to take advantage of the surge to make things easier for myself, I feel I should have the choice of whether or not I want to do it. If I'd rather change my class to something I am more in the mood to play, I'd like the choice. This would not be as much of a problem if I felt like I was gaining something else of value, but in reality, I feel like I am not. The drop rate for vanguard engrams feels particularly stingy, especially compared to the seasonal battlegrounds playlist, and the final chest doesn't even drop legendary world drops or glimmer as rewards every time. Sometimes I get literally nothing from a completion, which feels really bad. With all this being said, it seems like the only thing I am really earning from the vanguard ops playlist is vanguard rep, but once again, I can probably earn much more from just running the lowest level nightfall, leaving only the fact that there is some diversity in strikes I am running as a benefit to the ops playlist. In short, I feel like the vanguard ops playlist is not really rewarding my time. I am not saying that I want to be given an exotic for every vanguard ops strike completions, but as it stands now, I feel like there really is NO point to running it, and honestly that upsets me because I used to enjoy loading into a chill activity and just getting some loot, even if it was to dismantle and then getting a pinnacle - but I cannot really justify running an activity that is basically giving me nothing when I know my time could be better spent in the game doing basically anything else. Some changes that I think could improve the situation overall would be to remove the subclass surge matching pinnacle from the nightfall, leaving it only on the ops playlist, reduce the number needed from 5 to 3, and remove the requirement to match the surge. In other words, play 3 strikes, get a pinnacle. Furthermore, I feel like it is not too much to ask for a guaranteed vanguard engram from every completion, because once again, playing through a strike to not be rewarded with anything does not feel good in a loot-based game. This post ended up being much longer than I intended, and if anyone has actually read this far, I hope that I conveyed my thoughts on the matter in a thoughtful and constructive manner. If you agree or disagree with me or have any thoughts on the matter I haven't addressed here, feel free to share them with me. I am curious what other people think. -Thank you for your time.

The reputation you gain is unbearably slow now, ever since they changed to the scoring system. There are some instances where I get more rep doing a normal strike than nightfalls. And then other times instead of 150-200 rep points, i get like 80. It needs to be double this amount or something, there's nothing particularly enjoyable about running through the same strikes on repeat for mid loot. And yeah the vanguard chests at the end seem to be more stingy than before.

  • Main things are catalysts and the Pinnacle drop, before the strike playlist would put me to sleep it was too easy.
