The Difficulty Spike Has Killed D2 For Me

When I heard the plan to "bring the challenge back," I was cautious, but remained hopeful. I'm someone who plays games to relax and unwind after a hard day at work. Put on a podcast or a classic MST3K in the background, and just chill. Run some patrols, complete some bounties, bang out a seasonal activity or a strike, maybe even grab a Nightfall here and there. Maybe it's me, but I don't understand the mentality of those who feel an almost masochistic sense that a game should absolutely wreck them. Dying sucks, losing sucks, and punishing difficulty just feels like a chore. I don't feel a sense of triumph when I overcome an obscenely difficult game, I feel like I've just finished a painful medical procedure (which isn't entirely fair; the medical procedure will at least accomplish something). During Season of the Seraph, I soloed my first exotic mission, complete the Wish Ender exotic quest (yes, it sat in my quest log since Forsaken), and got the catalysts for half a dozen weapons. I felt triumphant. I looked forward to each daily reset and accomplishing so much more. Now, I feel a sense of dread just looking at the game. I saw the wipe screen more times than ever during my initial playthrough of the campaign. I can't run the exotic mission without help, and the one time I tried it on legendary was a massacre (my Fireteam mates abandoned me at the first encounter when they saw how far south things were going). The Nightfalls are brutal, and the weapon drop rates are pathetic. I go to Neomuna maybe 2 or 3 times a week, because I just end up dying so frequently. I want to complete the Legendary Campaign so I can get some cool loot, but Calus killed me at least a dozen times on normal, and I can only imagine how brutal he'll be this time around. I get that there are people out there who want to be challenged, but they had Raids, Grandmaster Nightfalls, Trials of Osiris, etc. Did they really need more? And for the community, here's a fun drinking game: take a shot for every reply to this post that falls under the 'git gud' meme.

  • It makes everything take longer, which I think is what they actually wanted. You know, for the pretty graphs they show to the people in suits. It's not that I cant do it, it just turned the annoyance dial up a few notches. The exotic glaive quest is outright ridiculous. I agree with that.

    • So lots of players say use special and heavy weapons and stop using primary weapons after bungie nerfed us and jacked up the ads 10 fold . But I have ammo finder mods on and finisher mod for special ammo. The whole running around thing looking for ammo and trying to pick up orbs is a really bad design on bungies part .its not fluid or smooth game play. they really need to fix some of these issues to make the game flow better . add in a orb seeker mod and a ammo seeker mod . I don't know how many times we dont even have time to look around for ammo that could be laying way back in corner and there dumb orbs scattered like a easter egg hunt . just a couple changes and the game would be much better if they insist on the over leveled ads and nurfing players so primary weapons are now obsolete , unless you want to unload 5 clips make dinner come back and unload another 5 clips on 1 ad. Fix this mess please.

    • I dont mind the challenge/difficulty increase but they should also increase the reward for doing so. Yesterdays LS on neptune completely pissed me off. Get in the boss room. Take out all the adds and go to fight boss. I got 100res, and damage mods plus had woven mail going and a cabal dog jumps on me and 1 shots me. Plus who thought having a 15 sec timer on a revive in a LS was a good thing?

What irritates me about this whole thing is how perfect last season was. Inclusive light level requirements for GMs and master raids. People are actually doing them, many for the first time. The light level was low enough that even I helped some clan mates with master raid challenges. People were happy. I saw praise for the new system both here and on Reddit. And then they went and did...this? Ugh. The master raids being forced -20 means I'm not helping anybody with it. Just my experienced raid team, and just for the seal, and that's it. 4 times loading in, grabbing CPs if I can first. This sucks.

      • Honestly I really don't feel like a guardian anymore. I mostly play PVE excluding raids from encountering quite a few toxic people on the LFG discord and I generally know that survivability is king in most of destiny content. I main Titan the most but also play quite a but of warlock as well (especially recently) and dabble in hunter a little. I run 100 Resilience all the time and with 2 sometimes 3 elemental damage reduction mods on my chest armor. And when I go out into Neomuna or play any of the new content it just feels like I immediately get shredded by a light breeze. If I'm not running something like Lorely or standing in my warlock well then me and my squad mates usually get 2-3 tapped by bosses or just orange bar enemies. It is insane how much of a jump in difficulty you took one season into the new dlc. I assumed you would play it more cautiously and increase the difficulty a little over each season until we got to the final shape but you just went all in didn't you? I enjoy a good challenge. It feels good to overcome an obstacle you struggled against, but that same difficulty can sour the victory if it is TOO hard. Maybe I'm just venting or I need to "Git Gud" but you are going to find it extremely hard to get new players into the hellscape that is considered the "casual" content for destiny as well as retaining said players as well as your current playerbase. -Rant off-

        • Well not a solution to everyone but I am happy to help. I help every Sunday - whether it be a dungeon, GM, exotic mission, story mission. Helped a bunch of people with Legend Calus. Done a few Sherpa runs of Avalon. I do what I can. Message me if you need a hand.

Don't listen to the "get gud" people. They are just incapable of acknowledging that some people are casual players or haven't the time to invest in the game. People are different. The game used to cater to all sorts of different players. Had they just added Master and Grand Master to more activities then they would have pleased everyone, but by just making the entire game more difficult they have frustrated many casual and solo players. It's like telling 20% of your player base that you don't want their custom any more.

            • It does suck to use sooo much ammo just to kill. But I heard from one of my clanmates that this difficulty was because bungie listened to a streamer (cannot remember his name), that surviving was too easy. Also heard from my clanmate that this streamer only does raids.

            • Me too. Was doing a legendary lost sector solo. Final boss was 99.9% dead and he just stomps and I get sent to orbit. Is that supposed to be challenging? Am supposed to find that fun? Sony needs to clear out the current management and start fresh. The current group cannot deliver a product that I’m willing to pay for and have proven their lack of design skills. And they DO NOT play the game!

              • Bungie is collecting feedback EXCLUSIVELY from hardcore players. (streamers who constantly complain about things that work against their own interests) Streamers play the game 24/7 and get paid doing so. They are a source of advertisement for Bungie. Therefore they see the quick $ pulling in new players when their free advertisors are happy with the game. Their behavior is horrible for the long term success and player numbers tho. Players will check the game out but they won't stay because even complete noobs will soon realize how shallow, uninspired, grindy and lackluster the game is nowadays. Current dev team working on D2 just has zero passion for the game atleast it really feels like it. Bungie needs to start catering to the vast majority of players instead of desperately trying to satisfy the 0,1 % of neckbeards who live and breathe the game.

              • I quit the season before Lightfall when they announced a 3 person underleveled season activity. I've played since not long after D1 launched. I waited on Lightfall to see the reviews and it just didn't sound fun. I don't play it to feel underpowered but still have to power my character by grinding the same old stuff we've been grinding for years but with added difficulty of underpowering you. I'll see what's up down the road but right now I don't think I'll be back playing. D2 still needs a 109 gig update on my XSX that it's not getting.

                • The only thing I can think of is, given there’s a lot of psychology implanted in this game, that bungie is saying, “Hey, you see all this pain you’re enduring while leveling up? It sucks right? You better start looking into builds.”. As a kind of way to force players to be better? That’s my guess

The last statement is perfectly clear of the miscalculation on difficulty Bungie made, and the very people they listened to where literally the small percentage that wanted this over everyone else's expense. The challenge should be optional like before, that and Seraph was a bit hard enough I couldn't get the catalyst for the Pulse Rifle.. Not to mention those who truly want challenge, they indeed have Raids, Grandmaster Nightfalls and Trials. Warframe has Steelpath mode, you simply engage it and everything is set at higher difficulty with a few modifiers and encounters. It's made for everyone who want to test their blade. Destiny 2 now feels like it's for those who Stream it and not for thee.

I only half agree with you, and here's why: The difficulty increases were requested by, and are liked by, top end players. The kind of players who love to play GMs and master raids. The game was far too easy and honestly for many players it still is, just slightly less so. These changes needed to happen. However, the place where Bungie missed the mark on difficulty is in the base content. Normal campaign, patrol zones, normal strikes, basically anything that doesn't have a "legendary" or higher modifier next to the name..... Should not have been touched. That's where your new lights and less able guardians play, and they absolutely did not ask for and clearly did not appreciate the difficulty increase. Not to mention, the players that DO like it hard are unlikely to spend any significant amount of time in these activities. Now that these points are said, it's time to tackle the big disconnect that indeed many people having, and while im sure it's likely to ruffle some feathers, it is the bitter truth: If you are struggling so bad in legend or higher content that the game is unfun, that content was NOT designed for you. If you want to play on that difficulty setting then the onus should be on you to improve and not the game to be nerfed. Let's also keep in mind, that harder content is all the same as normal content, just harder. You can experience the same content at normal difficulty. Going higher SHOULD get harder, and have better rewards as incentive. Destiny does this, as does many very popular games on the market, and that's ok. Tldr: revert normal content, keep legend+ as is.

Yeah, my partner quit as well. I'm also starting to hate this game with the difficulty changes, unnecessary strike extensions, piles of bugs, and the disconnect that bungie has with most players. I still enjoy raiding. But I already have a different game lined up with the crew.

I popped on this past monday after hearing about Lance Reddick just for old times sake. I realized my season pass ran out and it was a new season. I got a new one, and damn... Toto, we're not in kansas anymore.

                            • I am by no means a good player and D2 is to date the only third person shooter I've ever played so my perspective is obvious colored by that but I definitely agree that the increase in difficulty with Lightfall was over the top. Perhaps certain areas of the game like patrols and the campaign were a little undertuned in WQ but they definitely overcorrected that in LF. And it's not the good kind of difficulty either, it's just become more of a slog with everything taking longer than it used to. Changing the way Legendary Lost Sectors work is a prime example of that. Balancing them at 20 levels higher than the hard cap for the season feels like a bad joke. If people weren't doing Lost Sectors before they're definitely not going to do them now.

                            • Yeah as it stands I find it fun and cool. But with the up coming changes Bungie just dropped in the twab and recent post. This is definitely gonna be my last season of destiny. They must be crazy. They are making the content exponentially harder. But Giving you laughable rewards. Or little to no rewards. This has been a trend with Bungie the last few years . Take take take. Never give , never reward your time. Or your Money, or your support. Guardian ranks is a prime example of this. If you transferred your guardian from your D1 account. Your rank should be way higher. And you should get more rewards. But as per usual with Bungie they wanna make everything Vanilla. So that new light players Don't feel bad. Yea sounds like a great business model. Their only focus is on new players and making the game great and and easy for them. They do little to nothing to reward vets or the hard core players. We are just dogs they throw old scrapes to. Here is a emblem.... 1 emblem in 5, years. Or a title. For people playing 60hrs a week for 6, years come on. You can and should want to do better. Now light level is going away. Redick
