This is and has been part of the game for a long time. It’s not new and isn’t going away. It helps with not watering down seasonal artifact mods.
You have 5 subclasses so learn to use them and create builds. There are some OP builds on all 3 characters.

But it is probably going away. From last weeks crucible update blog "We are also looking at ways to decouple the Challenges for "Earn a Daily Reputation Bonus" from "Complete matches as specific subclasses to earn a Pinnacle" in Iron Banner, but don’t have a solution we are happy with yet."

Players never learn in this game. They complain and cry for things to be change only to cry and complain that it was changed. I haven’t even used Strand in PVP yet. I’m using a solar build for the double grenade. Next IB I’ll get to dip into some new builds though.
