The Nightmares of our friends and allies...

Season of the Haunted brought back Nightmares and gave us more insight into how they work. Honestly I really enjoy this concept in the Destiny universe as fears and insecurities are often what really bring characters to life. The Nightmares provide a perfect vessel to bring life to those vulnerabilities not only as a character itself but also as an challenge that the one it haunts must overcome in order to grow. We even know the nightmares of a few characters outside of those seen in Season of the Haunted, Ikora's nightmare takes the form of Cayde-6, and Elsie Bray's nightmare is her sister Ana Bray. Thus I wanted to discuss the potential Nightmares of our other friends and allies and the forms they might take. Here's a few of my own speculations: Drifter: His Ghost, Drifter has never really trusted his Ghost nor had a good relationship with him. So if there was something Drifter needs to work through it's his relationship with his Ghost and the fact he's a lightbearer. Petra Venj: Riven is some seriously possible nightmare fuel for many obvious reasons. But on more personal level, if Petra's nightmare is not a disdainful cynical version of Mara Sov regurgitating her belief that she's failing as Queen’s Wrath, then its her deceased sister Pinar doing the same. For those who don't know Petra's most obvious fear is failing her Queen/the Reef. If you don't believe me, just remember Petra once held a knife to Crow's throat for saying "Perhaps your Queen's faith in you is misplaced." Since the beginning Petra has perpetually lived in other people's shadows, whether it was Mara's while she was Regent Commander, filling Sjur Eido's place as Queen’s Wrath, serving under Abra Zire in the Reef Wars, or being in Pinar's shadow during their Techeun training. To make matters worse Petra is often surrounded by people who doubt her, Paladins Devi, Fen, and Rior, and her teacher Imar to name a few. Mara is the only immediate person who has faith in her, but at the same time even Petra has doubted her Queen’s faith in her. Which could also be interpretted as her Queen’s faith isn't entirely enough, in other words Petra lacks faith in herself. If Petra wasn't worried about failing in her duty as the Queen’s Wrath than Crow's remark during Season of the Lost wouldn't have bothered her in the slightest. Mara Sov: Honestly kinda tricky, because its hard to gage if Mara is really afriad of anything, after everything she's endured. The Witness is an obvious choice, as it offered Mara a terrifying glimpse of a feature where she served as a Disciple. But name one being in the Destiny Universe that's not afraid of the Witness at some level. So with that in mind I would also say Sjur Eido is a worthy Nightmare canidate. Sjur and Mara were once lovers as well as confidants. If there was anyone who's thought or memory could harm Mara it's Sjur's. Even the Marsenna warns us to be wary of when its being objective, so it is possible that Sjur and Mara's drifting apart was not as easy or simple as the Marasenna makes it out. Although after some discussion some friends have pointed out to me that Mara's mother Osana Sov or her old Queen & Captain Alice Li could have some potential. Moreso Osana than Alice I think. However we do get this line in the Marsenna as well: "When she lies awake at night, seized by anxiety, she tries to tally up the loss in her head, but it is too huge, and it becomes a formless thing that stalks her down the pathways of her bones like the creak of a gravity wave." So it's quite possible Mara's nightmare is something far more abstract, like the burden of her Queenship or the people who've perished on her behalf. Osiris: Either Savathun or Sagira, for fairly obvious reasons either way. Osiris spent a fairly long time as Savathun's puppet, likewise its clear Osiris grieves for his lost Ghost and it wouldn't surprise me if he feels some remorse for how he treated Sagira and what happened to her. Crow/Zavala: I think if Zavala and Crow ever found themselves subject to the Nightmares ever again, I could see Amanda being the form their new Nightmare takes. Though I think they'd be better equipped to handle a new Nightmare given then events of tge Season of the Haunted. Misraaks: Either Eramis or his mother who was his captain/superior officer, whom he betrayed when Sjur Eido captured him and brought him to the Dreaming City during the Reef Wars. What are your thoughts, what do you think are the Nightmares of our various friends and allies? Tell me below, I would love to discuss.

  • Have you read the lore book A Man With no Name? It's about the Drifter. If you haven't already read it then you should go read Home parts 1 through 4. It's really interesting and shows good things about the Drifter. I think his Phantom would be that little girl he cared about, Yu. He clearly wanted to save her, and he cared for all the people in that village. And with the way his Ghost got on to him for something that the Drifter had no control over, Drifter probably feels even worse about what happened to those people, especially Yu.
