The D2 matchmaking rules are as follows:
Twelve players are picked at random.
The six best are put in one team.
The other six are put into the other team.
That’s it. If the skill levels of all 12 players are close then it’s a close match. If the skill range is wide it’s a mercy.

You forgot one piece though…after that match, to keep the 50/50 win ratio, players who lost are put with the best players from that previous match…after that match, rinse and repeat. If you lose, the game will match you with the best players to give you a win. Then after a few wins, it’ll put you on/with low performing players while the best players from the previous few matches are put with the players who’ve been losing. I’ve played hundreds of games and tracked it.
