That sounds pretty cool! I hope you're able to find a good group and have a fun time playing the game. I've reached the same point of dedication with Persona 5 (platinum trophy in both P5 and P5R, all in-game awards in P5R, and 1000+ hours across double-digit playthroughs in each game), so I can definitely empathize with wanting a way to make an old favorite game fresh again. I would consider joining myself and checking out what the game is like, but I keep incredibly inconsistent waking hours and I'm too antisocial to consistently be up for voice chat. That would make scheduling game days stressful for all parties involved, and I hate being the reason that plans are held up. I'll definitely be cheering your party on from the sidelines, though!

  • It's always crazy to me when people say they have over 1,000 hours on a game. I'm not sure I'll ever play a game that much (though FFCC is definitely the biggest contender!). If talking on voice chat is what holds you back, then I don't mind if you don't talk. There's an in-game chat that covers most things; it's just short messages like "Let's do this!", "Thanks!", "I'll cast fire!" and stuff like that. The main reason I want a voice chat up is so I can convey things more efficiently on my end. Like, one thing that's always super hard to do with randos is trying to cast Haste or Hastega. To do this, you have to cast Raise + Cure + Cure (+ Cure for -ga), with each player casting a different spell. There's no way to simply say "Let's cast Haste!" so you need to do this whole thing, where you say "I'll cast Raise!" and then "I'll cast Cure!" 3 times, and some people will get it, but a lot of people don't, and it can get frustrating. Me being able to actually explain how to cast Haste is so much easier. :p Tbh, though, even if you don't want to join for the main thing, it'd be super cool if you'd at least play the first dungeon sometime! If you're worried about holding up the team, I'm totally down for a 2-man party! :D

  • I might be down to try out the first dungeon with you at some point, but I have no idea when. That'll depend on when I can free up some storage space on my PS4 and if the moon and stars align (figuratively) in such a way that I have the energy for social interaction on more than a forum correspondence level.
For context, I have only willingly continued interacting irl with one person (outside of my family) since graduating high school in 2016. When I say I'm antisocial, I mean I'm a proper reclusive shut-in. Socially inept, socially avoidant, the whole nine yards.
My interest in any given thing waxes and wanes in very unpredictable, spontaneous bursts, so don't be surprised if you get a DM out of the blue saying "Hey, do you have time to do that one thingy some time within the next few hours?!" (<- Note the punctuation within the quote! :p) It could happen tomorrow, or it could be twelve years from now when I wake up at 9:00pm and randomly remember that we talked about this. I have absolutely no clue when the mood will strike me, so be prepared!

  • Haha, no worries. I will say, if a dedicated game night thingie gets going, it may be difficult to play more than the first few dungeons if you wind up having fun. This game's dungeons kind of go on cycles: when you clear a dungeon it goes from "Active" to "Inactive", and after clearing 6 "Active" dungeons, the first 3 become "Active" again, and when a dungeon "Reactivates", it goes up in difficulty. Or in other words, if the game night actually takes off (which is a big "if" mind you) the dungeons on the save file will progressively be getting beefier. This isn't an issue for the first 3 dungeons, because you could host those in the demo and I could easily make a new character, but playing the others might be difficult. Mainly because I only have a limited number of saves. Still, it's nothing that can't be figured out. :p
Not having the energy for a ton of social interaction is understandable. I can get like that sometimes, too. However, do be sure to not fall into the trap of thinking being "socially inept" makes you bad company. I love everybody! :D
Imagining this 12 years scenario is funny. Like, I'd be almost 40. I'm sure I'd still enjoy FFCC, but like, at that point I'd either have found other friends who also enjoy it and play it regularly, or I would have given up hope of ever having people to play it with. Then just out of the blue "Hey, wanna play FFCC?!". Would I jump at the opportunity? Would I go like "Ah yes, memories."? Would the Switch's servers still be online? Would I be dead? Could I possibly be married, but for some reason my wife absolutely hates FFCC, and she sees you asking to play it with me, and she acts like I'm relapsing onto a drug or something, and freaks out at me? The possibilities are endless...

Hey, I'll also be closing in on 40 at that point. I'm only a year younger than you (26), so maybe it would be entertaining to message you when we're both middle aged and we can have a good ol' Final Fantasy session. I most certainly won't be married, but I might have held onto just enough of my remaining sanity to say something funny on occasion! And now, here's something completely different. Totally random tangent, but seeing the phrase "Final Fantasy" while reading over my post and talking about dungeons reminded me of Final Fantasy 15. Did you play that one? I enjoyed it quite a lot, personally, with the exception of one postgame dungeon. Do you remember the conversation we had a while back about movement mechanics in video games? We talked at length about how good movement mechanics can make a game more enjoyable, but we didn't end up talking much about bad movement mechanics. Pitioss Ruins in FFXV is an excellent example of how having clumsy movement mechanics in a game can really take away from the experience. The entire dungeon is focused on traversal and jumping puzzles, as opposed to the action/combat focused gameplay throughout the other dungeons in the game. If you've played through even part of the dungeon, you're probably aware of how unresponsive and imprecise the character movement felt for the kind of platforming challenges the dungeon threw at you. I pushed through to the end to get the accessory that enabled auto-dodging, and while the payoff at the end was nice, the experience as a whole was just frustrating and unenjoyable. Everything else about the entire game was top-notch. I loved the combat, the gear/skill progression, the characters, and the story the whole way through. That said, the movement in one optional section of the game left enough of an impression to be the first thing that I remembered about it a few years later. It definitely supports what you were saying about strong movement mechanics being a major factor in making a game fantastic instead of just good.

  • Haha, well, whether it's in 12 years or 12 minutes, if you do ever get the urge to play FFCC let me know! I will gladly play some! :D (except please don't in 12 minutes, 'cause I'll be asleep, and should be right now) Alas, I am by no means a Final Fantasy nerd. I've only played the Crystal Chronicles Trilogy (FFCC, FFCC: Ring of Fates, and FFCC: Echoes of Time), and World of Final Fantasy. I've also played the Kingdom Hearts games, which have Final Fantasy Characters in them, and then, like, I've messed around with Sephiroth in Smash Bros a little bit. But that's the extent of my experience with Final Fantasy. It's one of those franchises I've meant to get into, but just kinda never really did.
As a side note, I really hope Echoes of Time gets a remaster in the same vein as the original. The original is the best, but Echoes of Time was really good too, and while I probably wouldn't play it as much, I would love to play through it online! Ring of Fates kinda sucks, but if they remaster that one, I'd probably play that, too.
But, yeah, bad movement really can ruin everything. I'm unfortunately reminded of a game I picked up recently, Penny's Big Break, I think? Wow, did I already forget the name? That's pretty sad. Anyway, this game actually has some moves that should theoretically make for great movement mechanics, but I don't know if it's the controls, or just the responsiveness or something, Penny feels absolutely awful to control. I don't remember if I made it to level 2 or level 3, but either way it wasn't very far, just because I didn't like the way I was moving around. And, like, here's the weird part, I love Balan Wonderworld. Now, if you haven't heard much about Balan Wonderworld, that's okay, but if you have, it's probably that the game sucks. It's not nearly as bad as people say it is, and in fact I think it's pretty fun, but one big thing about it is that your movement is so simplistic. For the most part you only have "Run" and "Jump". You can pick up costumes with abilities, but most of them either boil down to replacing "Jump" with some sort of action like "Punch" or adding some variation of "Hover" or "Fly" by holding down A. Like, there's not a lot you can do here, yet it felt so much better to control than Penny's Big Break, even though Penny not only had more movement options at her disposal, but she had movement options that were theoretically pretty great. So, like, yeah, movement is tricky. And since movement is such a fundamental part of almost any game, getting it wrong just messes everything up!
