Using the same principles as pineapple on pizza and imagining it on a burger, I can't imagine it working out
I tried pineapple on pizza, it's okay but the sweetness from the pineapple doesn't mix well with the cheese and sauce, so it wouldn't mix too well with a burger with cheese and a more savory flavor with the meat patty

Thats why you also add spicy to the mix to alleviate and offset the sweeter pineapple.

I felt the same when I initially read it but a few of the recipes I subsequently looked up had suggestions for things such as grilling pineapple to temper the sweetness, and several of them included adding things like peppers for a spicy/sweet combo that really stuck with me.
