I'm not defending their blatant reuse of assets, but if you thought anything free was going to be some kind of ground breaking innovation, you set yourself up for disappointment. I don't believe for one second that the team lacks passion. They've proven time and time again that they can deliver. But when you're answering to a corporate structure, professional life is hell. I'm no game dev, but I deal with corporate every day. Doesn't matter how great you are at maintaining a ship when morons are steering it straight into an iceberg. Sometimes the moron listens to good ideas and sometimes they just screw everything up because they can or because they know better.
