Time gated weapons - yay or nay? Let's get it in writing

Good idea

104

Bad idea

626

Pretty self explanatory poll. Are the timegated weapons a good idea or bad idea? Yes or no? Silly arguments between people claiming "99% don't agree" and then the rebuttal of "you don't know the numbers!" Let Bungie know where you stand, maybe it makes a difference? So let's get some numbers. **EDIT: instead of attacking me for a post, you can vote or not. And if your stance is you don't care either way then this post wasn't catered towards you to begin with.

  • This poll bodes well for the future. Very few polls are this much of a draw. And the content is free and if they play it it will almost be like them shutting up.

Like it or not like it could be more accurate. There doesn’t need to be a poll because most players don’t like it but it’s something they do and isn’t new. Theres a reason on their end they do it. They already know players don’t like it. Much like leveling. Most players don’t like it but every DLC we level. Second time I responded but had more than 10 seconds to write a response.

      • The fact that there is so much debate over timegated WEAPONS vs having it all at once is such a shame. I can understand timegating content ( Activities, story, and more (although im not a fan of i can be impartial to it)) WEAPONS?? with limited edition skins no less?? People really allowed themselves to be brainwashed by bungie's approach to live service. Destiny was better than this. I know the standard is low but Destiny was better than this.

Update* Bungie is condensing the weapon releases to April 30th instead of may 21. Do with that what you will

          • It isn’t great, but it will have the effect of making the player population healthier for longer. People logging in a bit once a week will help to ensure there’s people to match with whenever you go into to play onslaught. Similar reasoning to why we’ve had to run a seasonal activity once a week for the last 2 years. It’s kinda annoying, but I don’t really mind it. There’s plenty to grind for as is, and I won’t be able to play enough to get what I want in the first week anyways.

            • I guess in a way, it CAN help with not overflooding the players with so much, and it helps with the wait until FS. Can't refuse at least some slowed down play. But that is in the case that there is enough content to keep the community occupied. Bungie in particular are not exactly the best at this. For years, the community is known to complete content so quickly. It's simply too short or way too easy. It leaves the wait dry. Timegated weapons can be good, but for Bungie, unless they actually make the quests/activities for these weapons actually meaningful, and not a simple 'Kill X amount, speak to these people' and boom, completed within a day, time gated is a solid nay...

I doubt they have the capability to roll them out without massive problems. Let’s face reality for a minute. This company could have been the “Apple” of online gaming. Instead they most likely killed off any film or tv potential as well as spin off games. If this companies mismanagement isn’t taught in business schools ten years from now I’ll be shocked. All they needed to do was update the networking, they had the worlds built already. Instead they decided to go with a new pvp game, something they had and gave up on. If they cared about their product they would have addressed networking, pvp, getting all the worlds mapped and back.

                • Nothing against timegating, it is a terrible idea but at the same time ppl are gonna have everything farmed immediately and then turn around and be like "well I'm done nothing to do, bungie should add more content".

                  According to bungie
we’ve seen the feedback on releasing an additional weapon each week after the first six drop on April 9, and we’re condensing the schedule to release everything by April 30th, rather than May 21st.
Doesn't really matter what you choose, but anyone who chose time gating as good idea or/and defended it during the past week should start their grind at May 21st instead of April like us, otherwise your opinion had nothing to do with time gating, the intention was purely aimed at whiteknighting Bungie

Man. They really do have zero regard for their playerbase. This is bad. The problem with developers in general, and Bungie specifically, is that they apparently think they're parents? Or gods? I keep saying it. It should be common sense that if we choose to grind hardcore for everything right out of the gates, then complain about boredom when we get it all in a week or two, well that's our own fault. If we don't want to be bored we can take self accountability, and choose to grind over a longer period and do other things. Too bad if we can't. That's not their responsibility. Nobody can keep up with player demand, especially the hardcore, dedicated no lifers. Its incredibly foolish to heavily pursue as Bungie does. I don't understand why, instead of creating extra work with things like timegates, they just work within their means. Clearly they can't keep up how they currently operate, so they should be cutting out anything that isn't conducive to game development and creation. All this timegating does, is creates more work for Bungie. It also reinforces the incessant "need" for players to grind so hard, so fast, and greatly exacerbates player demand issues, and the last thing they need to be doing is exacerbating the issues this playerbase already has. They're snowballing the problems so hard. Gaming as a whole, was literally conceived at its very roots and foundation to be a casual experience that one could reasonably indulge in around their lives. Things evolve and that's fine, but the foundation needs to remain, within reason. People don't like that? Too bad. It is what it is. They need to stop with all the damn FOMO, even if its just shaders, or special edition weapons. People have other stuff to do, and they'd have more returning players if they just stopped this nonsense. When a person sees they can engage anytime; cool no worries. They'll be willing to do it, and go hard when they can. Add limited time, and now it turns into "Crap. I can't build my schedule around this. I'm out." and they won't even try. Gaming isn't supposed to be some elite, exclusionary experience. Especially not a game classified as an MMO, or Massive Multiplayer Online. The genre itself literally meant to appeal to the broadest audience possible in gaming. FOMO does not mesh with this at all, and Bungie expressly stated they were moving away from that, which turns out it was apparently a lie. I hope their poor decision bites them very hard. Holiday events are enough limited access. It never needs to go further. They'd have it so much better if they just focused on the average player, with consideration to people's personal lives in mind, and left all the FOMO in the dust. Its not hard. All they have to do is ask themselves how much time they could realistically dedicate to this stuff in their own busy personal lives, and work within that. Why is this never a question these people ask?

                    • Dumb idea. With 50% drop rate and current rng, you will be farming this activity nonstop and still wouldn't get the desired roll. So there is no need time gating.

                        • TL;DR: It's good for Bungie, but bad for us. It depends on where you sit. If you look at it strictly from an engagement standpoint it's a good thing. This move guarantees that people will engage with the game for an extended period of time at some point before Final Shape, which is what Bungie wants. It also keeps Destiny in the zeitgeist. From a player standpoint it's crappy, because there are a few very specific weapons people want, and those weapons aren't immediately available. This, on a very understandable level, adds a layer of frustration, because if I want Mountaintop, I have to wait to get it, and if that is the only weapon I have eyes for I just have to sit here with my thumb up my butt like a dork while Bungie decides to dangle the carrot in front of me. It's like getting your Christmas presents one at a time, each day after Christmas, and the brand new bike that you wanted more than anything is among the gifts, but you only get it on New Years Day. I'm happy because I'm getting it, but the frustration comes from knowing that Bungie could give it to me right now, but wants to tease me and string me along. I know the arguments is "be patient, what are you a kid who can't wait" and my response to that is that I'm not a child. I'm an adult with things to do, and I don't have time to sit here while Bungie tries to have it's cake and eat it as well.

                          • I wonder how many people will make the connection between desperately chasing loot and time gating, rng, fomo and monotonous grinding. People vote with how they spend their time in game and clearly enough people have voted for these things to exist. Anyone who chases loot at the expense of enjoyment needs to rethink what a video game is for.

                              • I'd be fine if they time-gated the "special shader edition" versions, but everything should be obtainable from the jump. This would be a fair compromise to ensure Bungie gets its weekly engagement assurances without making the player base wait around for the weapon they want to unlock.

Ofcourse it’s a bad idea. As a long term player, someone who has “invested” probably close or more than a thousand dollars into D2 over the years I can confidently say one thing : I don’t need 70% of these horseshit redigned -blam!- guns I never used back then and won’t use now. All so that content creaters and your marketing team can spread out the “hype” till Final Sale launches. If I was really itching for another kinetic handcannon I’d go farm VoG. Oh and yeah let me just delete all my adept Hung Jurys and Fallen Guillotines. And pretend I used edge transit back in the early days. Or pretend I think Master of Arms 15% dmg boost isnt just as worse as Tricorn x1 Calling it now, most these into the light guns will see no use ever. They butchered whatever made them great, and are cheeks clenched afraid to release a gun with perks that are better than a raid weapon. That’s why it’s a bad idea that only benefits newer players who never had these guns. We know, and you know Bungie, that all we want are the best weapons on that list. For me that is mountaintop and Lunas , both for pve reasons. The rest I really can’t give a -blam!- about honestly. A buncha void weapons. Where is the artifact interaction with void? Where is it Bungie? Same -blam!- with you releasing a metric tonne of arc weapons this season THAT NOBODY ASKED FOR. Arc special waveframes, arc heavy waveframes, arc glaives, pulses, ar’s. WHO CARES. The Artifact is solar stasis and strand you numbnuts, Write it down, SOLAR STASIS AND STRAND BUNGIE

This is where even an acknowledgment would help to calm the community, bungie comes out and says yes, we understand the time gated thing is not ideal with whatever response they want would at least feel like they care and would go a long way imo. I’ve seen this thumbs in ears approach for so long it makes me not want to engage with the event at all.
