You can still make a fireteam before starting.

I know that and you clearly know that, and yet people still come onto the forum to whine about their matchmade teammates because they can't be bothered to make their own. My personal favorite response when telling someone to make their own team? "I shouldn't have to......;" apparently the expectation is to get a randomly created crack team every time.

Exactly that. Most new commers won't know about Discord lfgs and the new Fireteam finder in the game isn't the best solution either. People who makes these lfgs sometimes put some sort of restrictions and will often kick you, just because you don't have the latest Youtuber loadout on you or whatever. Speaking of kicking, some people will kick others just before the activity ends, preventing that person from getting their items and completions. Matchmaking would obviously prevent this sort of sabotage and damaging behavior.
