Bungie doesn't use servers other than for static/fixed environments like planets, vendors, maps, etc. Most of PvP uses CBMM, which means you are utilizing the connection speed of someone in your fireteam/match. If they start having network issues, or lag, it affects everyone else
If one has an understanding of basic networking and connection you'll know that error codes are not always the fault of your ISP, or Bungie - it's the flow of "traffic" between the two that can get interrupted for one of a million reasons - much like an accident on the highway, or annoying rubber-neckers who should have their license's revoked

Sure, I understand that. But today alone I've had 3 other players just in text chat talk about seeing a bunch of lag. Given that we just had a patch and knowing Destiny 2's history of bugs/connection issues, makes me wonder.
