Destiny’s silent majority.

TL;DR just a friendly reminder that the folks on these forums giving feedback are actually in the minority of the total concurrent playerbase. Bungie will always prioritize the silent majority over us. Here’s the (really) long version:
I’ve seen lots of people throwing around feedback, and just as many people wondering why that feedback “isn’t accepted when 99% of us here agree with it” The fact is that the majority of relatively concurrent Destiny players (everyone from casuals to diehards) do not interact with any of the game’s social channels (including Reddit and the forums) whatsoever, and probably never will. Most of them aren’t here posting complaints. Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes it’s a bad thing. I’m not defending Bungie or anyone in particular. I’m just posting this to remind folks that get mad (sometimes reasonably so — no shade from me) at the lack of feedback being implemented when the fact of the matter is that we make up not even 40% of the active community. I’m not going to bother looking up the statistics on the playerbase cuz this vocal minority “phenomenon”, if you want to call it that, applies to pretty much the entire media industry (with some exceptions obviously) and has been a thing for a long time. It’s been exacerbated by social media, but it goes back all the way to the 1950’s. Those exceptions I mentioned? They take place in maybe 1 in 1,000 businesses. That means the statistical odds are over 1,000 to 1 that Bungie will never listen to us like they “listen” to that silent majority. You are quite literally yelling out into the void, and we have decades of media business practices to confirm this. Please, please, PLEASE do not waste your time here, for your own sake! Go play the game, go outside, enjoy life [insert some eat pray love BS here]. Just don’t spend it here getting mad.
alright, i’m gonna go back to complaining about vault space

  • No one gives a flying fart in space about the "Silent Majority" because they are just that; SILENT. The loud ones get listened to because they are LOUD, and so they end up representing your dumb asses to the world. Also, you can't identify yourself as a majority when you have no actual proof or statistics for what that majority actually is.

    • This incorrect theory is very common. While it's true that some complaints are not felt by the majority of players, most are. Not everyone voices their complaints here. Instead, they voice their complaints among their friends, which does FAR more damage. We incorrectly call it "Toxicity". But there are so many simple quality of life changes Bungie could make. It wouldn't take much. It makes it extremely frustrating when a game is so close to perfection, but the higher ups at the company refuse to do the simple things. These simple things become huge issues in our minds. It happens to most of us. Some of us come here to voice our concerns and hope for change. Most of the rest just quit.

      • In a way you’re correct, Bungie do do everything for the silent majority but remember the silent majority aren’t that silent they made their voice heard loud and clear with lightfall being the worse selling DLC in Destiny history.

        • I’m one of the silent majority and let me explain why. I HATE this game. I mean, truly there are things I loathe about it. But I also love it. I’ve played on and off since year 2 of D1 and every time I leave, I find my way back. I’ve played competitively and casually. I have been angry and frustrated and confused by the horrible decisions that have been made by Bungie through the game’s lifespan. But I know that I’ll always play it. It’s like coming home. People like me don’t speak out much because we already have. We’ve been the raging fans demanding that Bungie “fix” our beloved game. And yet, no matter how they seem to screw it up, we’re still here. We still come home. Nothing we do will change Bungie’s decisions. They have been very clear that they will always follow THEIR vision for the game, regardless of what the player base thinks that vision should be. After years of being mad at Destiny, many of us have chosen to just accept it how it is. We can’t change it, but we know we can never leave it behind. So we sit back quietly while everyone else debates all over the internet about how Bungie should change the game. Because we know that no matter what they do, we’ll always be able to find some joy in it still.

          • I really dn't think bungie gives a rats -blam!- about the minority, or the majority.. when looking at our complaints and praise. They look at data analytics and decide from there where they want the numbers to be reflected. Thats it. WE have nothing to do with it except to either play or not play. Its why we all have our own opinion of the state of the game, are playing adn bungie keeps chugging along. They didn't make changes when we all complained about lightfall.. but, they sure did when their sales were horrid. That is the only way to affect change.. your feet, your wallet and if and how much you play.

          • I tell people this all the time - the sentiment of the forums isn’t the sentiment of the entire player base. Just because a small fringe of players flood these forums complaining that Zero Hour is too difficult for them to clear or ever having a chance to clear, doesn’t mean Bungie isn’t watching their internal numbers of the overwhelming majority of the players easily clearing the activity. The same goes for all the other outrage campaigns on these forums that claim Bungie only caters to “streamers”.

            • I love and hate this game at the same time. The godslayer title made me question my sanity. They don't know how to make difficult content so they drop us to -20 and give us the ad density of a low level activity. Nezarec sublime is a perfect example of why they need to rethink some of these incoming nerfs for tfs

            • Heavily depends on the topic. In some cases - mostly positive feedback, the low portion of the playerbase active in forums can represent the rest. In other cases - mostly negative feedback (for example Zero Hour), naturally only the portion affected by it (skill issue) will complain and provide an overproportioned amount of criticism, when the majority sees no issue. In forums you will also find a larger amount of fanboys, who will simply block criticism at all costs, that might be popular for the majority (PvP), because how could a multi-million-dollar-company possibly do wrong? Furthermore, some issues brought up in forums dont even interest the majority at all, like specific complaints about specific traits of a specific exo. So while certainly not always representing the entire community, the forums arent necessarily going against it either.

            • Yes the number of players who come to the forums is a minority of players. Because the majority of players are not here voicing an opinion, does not mean they think differently. The huge miss in revenue this past year says something about the majority of players. It says they are currently not happy with the game and do not want to spend money on it. Why do you suppose Bungie would miss revenue goals by half; happy players who love the current development direction of the game?

Critical thinking dictates that any video game form always makes up a minority of the playerbase, most players complain with their buddies or in private discord servers or just move on, it's wild to me when people think anyone not willing to put their opinions on public record must therefore be content with everything, it disqualifies your own post as much as it does the next guy

                  • I’m not sure if I agree… I mean, Bungie has made changes to the game based on popular sentiment, expressed by the vocal minority, and that has to start somewhere. Does anything change due to complaints here on Bnet? Not exactly, but it’s the combination of voices across all various platforms, often picked up, and signal boosted by influencers. I think it’s important that we voice our concerns regarding products that we purchase… especially live service games like Destiny 2… But the ultimate way to effect change, in any case, no matter how stubborn a developer can be, is to stop playing and stop purchasing content.

I hear you. I don’t think offering feedback is inherently wrong but it certainly is for a significant portion of people. I do comment on here often-ish (mostly when I’m bored, think I have a good suggestion, or think there’s a genuinely bad decision being made) but I don’t let it consume my being nor do I let it affect my emotional state, since I don’t get emotionally invested during arguments or debates. The alternatives is to say nothing which I’d argue is potentially worse because it gives the “oppressor” carte blanche to keep making bad decisions. Yes, I agree that social media has given everyone a megaphone and the anonymity provided in this space far too often brings out the worst in people. But the solution to this problem is not to become a voiceless citizen but to learn how to have a rational and thoughtful conversation with someone you disagree with. However, I’m not arguing that this change is going to start on a D2 forum. Lol. I’m not that naive, haha.

Been saying it for years. Those types are never the type to actually listen to reason like this though. They're not here for reason, they're here to get validation on whatever emotional outburst they're having over their video game in that given moment. And unfortunately there's a lot of them doing that. I used to think that these forums were at least good as a containment board for people like them but it feels more and more recently like they've figured out that this place was basically just a sounding board for them, and now they're determined to infest everywhere else that people talk about the game.

I dont know about that. I think anyone that has a voice should be able to lend it. However, the ones who carry the most weight are the ones who support the game religiously and will condemn anyone for having a voice of reason or opinion. The entirety of Destiny whether as a community or developers are mostly toxic whether in voice or decisions.
