I think Yars' Revenge is a funny franchise

Good evening everybody! This is Aifos coming to you alive from some planet out in space filled with GIANT BUGS! I don't even know how I got here, but someone please get me to a planet with regular sized bugs please! But, as I wait for a rescue ship, have you heard of Yars' Revenge? It was an old game released on the Atari in 1982. This was back when video games didn't really look like much of anything! It was a bit before my time, but I wound up getting one of those throwback mini consoles, and, well, everything on the Atari was pretty awful, to be honest. Everything, that is, except for Yars' Revenge! It still wasn't, like, a masterpiece or anything, but it was genuinely pretty fun! But like most Atari games, the franchise faded into nothingness as time went on (as far as I know)... Until 2011, where we got Yar's Revenge (note the different placement of the apostrophe), and then back in 2022 we got Yars: Recharged, and apparently this year as I've just learned, a new game in the franchise is coming out called Yars Rising! And, like, that in it of itself is already a little weird, isn't it? Like, first we get a big 29 year silence, then it shows up briefly again before vanishing for another decade, and then two games get spat out practically back to back. But the real funny thing about it is, this franchise has no idea what in the world it even wants to be. The 2011 reboot was an on rails shooter (like Star Fox), Recharged is a twin stick shooter boss battler, and the upcoming Rising is a 2D Metroidvania stealth/action platformer. But, my favorite part about it is, all of these games are kind of awesome? Like, the 2011 game is the #1 game I wanted to come to backwards compatibility after I got rid of my Xbox 360 (sadly it never did), and Recharged is one of my favorite twin stick shooters ever. Rising isn't actually out yet, but it looks really good from the trailer, and I'm actually pretty hyped for it. Yars' Revenge is like having a friend who totally changes their style every time you see them, but no matter what they're wearing they're always killing it. That is all I had to say. Tl;dr? Here's my point? The Yars' Revenge franchise has no idea what it wants to be, and none of the entries are even remotely similar to each other but they're all, like, really good, and it's funny. Go play some Yars games. Jambuhbye!

 • All I know about Yars is that it’s the fly dude on my mom’s GBA cartridge of Midway Games Classics Collection (or whatever it’s called). When I saw that there was a Yars game on the PS Store I had to do a double take. The only similarity was that there was something on the screen that looked to be Yars cuz it had wings.
