Underwhelmed by this Episode Rewards, Loop and possible solutions
I have been playing D2 for many years since it launched on steam, farming for the best possible rolls of weapons i care about, or even farming red borders to craft and try multiple combinations. Seasons has evolved over time, but this one is odd, i would say it even devolved.
Episode Revenant has introduced both onslaught salvation and tomb of elders as its main activities, it is fun and awesome, they nailed it.
I understand the idea of leaving red borders behind for a while so grinding random rolls are exciting like before, porting what was so successful during "into the light" onslaught. but the interpretation got lost in translation, what was exciting was getting those shiny rolls, but also how to get them (coins, and getting shinys outside the activity from shaxx chest)
Onslaught Salvation did come with shiny variants, lacking the custom skins coming with them, but i'm more bothered about the drops, and the lack of focusing. I'm looking for a shiny Heavy GL, i already killed 250 barons and havent got 1, so i should stay with the normal one then? Guess what, I still have not gotten the perk combo i want, i got a ton of HC instead. Also, Tonics might be bugged? drinking a specific tonic of "x" weapon will give me more "y", and also, it doesn't drop shiny variants. So there's a ton of RNG involved. Its frustrating, because i ran 3 sessions of onslaught back to back and dismantle everything. Yeah weapons this episode aren't that impressive, but I'm looking for the minimum, a decent 4/5 roll.
I remember a while back on a TWID Bungie looking forward to have a bad luck protection of some sorts. For me, shinys are a nice approach to that, because multiple perks are an extra chance of getting at least the line of perk you want. Maybe Bungie will implement red borders for these weapons when the 3 episodes are done and we transition to "Frontiers", as they said that crafting was intended for a type of catch up mechanic. But then, why bother to play now?
Destiny has already a system that rewards players for playing more, Core activities like strikes, crucible and gambit has a reset system, giving core weapon drops an extra perk chance for each reset, of a maximum of 3 lines for 4 resets per season/episode. Thank to this i got the bygones i wanted, dropping inside the activity or exchanging it with the vendor. Incentivize and gives bad luck players a higher chance. Also Raids adepts drop with extra perks for each red border weapon completed, an extra incentive for hardcore players to get the ultimate roll.
Why not implementing this for seasons? why is the grind so inconsistent across the game? If you want us to engage more and play more, then let us go up on a stair, instead of just plain luck. Because right now, instead of playing, I'm frustrated and decided to write this essay. The community has been vocal of the lack of grind pursue this episode, red borders were a nice point of entry, but also has an end, and with that in mind, people will play. We are right now in a casino on revenant, we enter, play, we either win or loose, and i feel i traded my time for nothing and lost.
Might be burnout, but i played with small breaks for 5 years. I want to feel excited for loot but also feel that i earned it, respected my time. Season of Dawn or arrivals before the crafting days, did give us multiple perks for completing season challenges.
This episode also had a bug on world weapons giving more line rolls than intended, it make every random engram worth it. They patched the bug, and i stopped claiming Rahul/Banshee engrams. (give banshee reset ranks too for world weapons)
Extra perks can also save vault space if someone is hunting for multiple rolls of the weapon, but now can get 3 in just one variant.
Solution for the Episode grind system loop:
- Because there are not red borders, Eido rank system reset (4) should give us extra perks of a maximum of 3 lines for the players that truly engage with the game, just like core activities. For average players is going to take couple of months, for hardcore maybe less than a month. Like core weapons, you can enhance all the perk lines. note that even with 6 perks you can still not get what you wanted, but is a better chance.
- What about shiny? make them adepts (so they are desirable for every type of player), already master worked, will also still have two line of perks, but if you did reset eido rank 4 times is guaranteed to have 6 lines (1 reset a chance of 1 extra perk, 2 reset 1 permanent extra, 3 reset a chance of 2 extra, 4 reset 2 permanent extra). And each rank reset after gives more chance of shiny to drop. So normal players will still have the shiny drops while playing normally, but long term players will get more on them.
- Tonics, Eido engrams and extra loot should also give a chance for shiny. Tomb of elders is lacking a little bit of loot compared to onslaught, i personally like the separation of loot so the chances are higher, but we should have an option to get all the season loot in one activity for the others. Also tomb is not dropping shiny even in the current version.
- Make this 6 perk weapons limited. Im not fan of FOMO, but when Onsl Salvation becomes its own playlist with these weapon dropping back with red borders, there is no power creep involved. Just like shiny weapons in "into the light". People that played during that time will remember and keep these rolls (a lot of players have stayed with their fav weapons still in the vault because of how special they are).
- Where are the muliperk splicer weapons? why did Dawn weapons had it in Enigma Protocol in the past episode but not these ones? Season of the splicer, where they debuted, had them too. Can we get more perks with the rank reset i mention above?
- If you want to keep players playing, let them earn it, but working around it, instead of deciding if i want or not spin the roulette and see if it was worth or not the time, and mostly it doesn't, i stopped caring because is not respecting my time. If Bungie fears players stop playing after getting all in the season, this system already hooked you as it requires many resets if you want to get more perks and better chances. And i know a lot of players chasing Raid adepts for the 9/9 roll, so pursuing 1 god roll isnt enough, getting 2 god rolls in 1 weapon or even 3 is a nice incentive for hardcore players in the long term until the yearly expansion pass ends.
Hope Bungie sees this, i might be the lower part of the population that care for multiperks, but after getting 5 copies of the same weapon with different rolls and lacking vault space, i want this, and find them more interesting and exciting.
Yes there are other problems in the game, but I'm focusing on how loot can be worked around, be in pair with other current loot systems, being consistent across the game, and help players feel more interested investing time to the game instead of what we have now (makes you play for the same drops and doesn't matter what you complete, 10 waves vs 50 waves are exactly the same loot)
