Hey guys! It's been a while since I posted on here, but I just finished a lil Dawning story and figured I'd post it for my fellow Drifteris fans :) Hope y'all enjoy!
The three eyed woman lay crouched on the ground, her lips parted to allow her mournful song to abscond into the chilly midnight air. Though her song was mournful, it was different than years past. She felt different.
"Moon- Eris?" Came a voice from behind.
Eris knew that voice well, not bothering to turn towards it or to cede in her singing. She could hear his footsteps as he approached her on top of the roof of an old moon base. Soft clouds of dust flew into the air with every quiet step taken, until the Drifter was rigbt behind her.
He crouched down, sliding his arms around her waist and pulling her to his chest, causing her song to hitch as the warmth of his breath landed against her pale cheek.
Her humming died down until all that was left was the sound of a gentle breeze and their breathing.
"Happy Dawning, Eris." The Drifter murmured in her ear, his beard tickling against her skin.
Eris leaned further into him, clinging to his warmth. "Happy Dawning, Germaine."
"What were you singin'?" He asked quietly. "Just now?"
"A song that was pressed against my heart." She replied, her voice slow and deliberate.
"It sounded mighty sad..." he hugged her tighter.
"It was a melody of remembrance... though not so much one of sorrow as it had been in years past. It was more of... peace."
"Remembrance of your fireteam?"
"Yes," Eris said, watching the breath of air cloud up and fade away. "And for Brya."
"But you say it ain't a song of sorrow?"
"No. In recent years I have come to peace with my inner turmoil, with my loss." She shivered as a breeze swept past. "I have found amicability among those who surround me, and it has brought me ease amongst the sea of pain. That sea which has risked many a time of pulling me under... of drowning me in the suffocating darkness" She closed her eyes and breathed out slowly. "But this, this closeness which I have achieved with others- with you... it is worth the battle I have fought against the temptation of allowing the water to wash over me.... I am pleased to be here," her voice softened a decibel. "To be with you. You strange, repugnant rat."
She smiled softly as she tilted her shadowed frame towards him, and the sight stole the Drifter's breath away. He forced air into his lungs before pulling her closer, burrowing his face into hers and kissing her cold lips.
"So..." The Drifter began after pulling away. "Your sayin' I make you happy?"
"You know what feelings your presence has aroused in me, Germaine. Do not feign misunderstanding."
"Heh..." he watched the smile that threatened Eris's lips, before pulling her into a tight hug from behind. "I got dinner up on the Derelict... thought you may want some company on such a cold night, y'know?"
"I would enjoy that."
"Also made you a box 'a raisin cookies... nice 'n fresh if you want 'em."
"Of course... thank you, Germaine."
"Hmmph," he grunted happily before getting to his feet. "C'mon, I'm sure we're both cold 'n hungry and ready for a bowl of chili with our names on 'em."
He grabbed her hand, pulling her up as a breeze flew by, carrying the sorrowful melodies that had been sung earlier. Eris smiled to herself, enjoying the weighted pressure of the Drifter's hand in her own, and feeling a new strength seep into her weary bones.
This would be a good Dawning, after all.
